A bit of research suggests this is a green leaf weevil

A mayfly in my garden this morning. They are supposed to be aquatic, but there is no water in the immediate vicinity.

A spear-winged fly in my garden yesterday. 4-5 mm long. Magnificent eyelashes, n'est-ce pas?

Thanks HC. Too windy yesterday, but ideal conditions this morning in my garden.

Yesterday I spent several minutes following the progress of this handsome beast walking across and posing a leaf before it scrambled across a gap between the tip of the leaf and this stalk and scuttling up under a leaf.

1:1 magnification, cropped. I've measured its length (in pixels) on the uncropped raw image, and using the size of the image (4000 4600 pixels wide) and the sensor (18mmx12mm), calculated its length to be 6.99 6.08 mm. To the naked eye it's a small thing on a leaf with a slightly brighter green colour than the leaf.

Very nice. I do like a shiny insect :)
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Thanks. Allegedly they are pests. Here it is today (or a close relation)

Ladybird eggs on the underside of a leaf on an apple tree this morning. Very close to where I saw a particularly sluggish ladybird a few mornings ago, almost cocooned in a curled-up leaf.

Yesterdays eggs are this morning's larval hatchlings.

The little yellow ones have turned dark brown, and they are crawling all over each other.

A few seconds of ladybird larva scrum on youtube.

If they can't find enough aphids and mites to eat they eat each other. Allegedly.

This afternoon I took a look at what was left of the ladybird larvae (the shed skin after the first moult). But with a naked eye rather than a macro lens. Blimey, they are tiny - about 1 mm long.

A couple of feet away was this comparatively giant crane fly on a bramble leaf.

A tiny speckled bush cricket on a bramble leaf in my garden this afternoon. 3-4 mm long (excluding legs and antennae). The speckles are not visible to the naked (i.e. my) eye.
