Imagine my delight when I discovered that the Trangia lightweight "Triangle" stove accepts not just the Meths burner but the gas burner.  This would give me all the flexibility I ever needed.

I'm a fan of meths and have a secondhand Swedish army trangia-style stove for a tenner from ebay. you can get meths anywhere, and you can fly with the stove if necessary and buy meths at the other end. it is also windproof and silent. it is slow but when camping that is not an issue - i set it up on arrival then put up the tent, and the water is boiling soon enough. in the mornings i set it up and go off to the loos, then on my return it is boiling away merrily. getting those gas cylinders with the threads in france and spain is really hard to do.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

these do not work on the universally-obtainable pierceable Camping Gaz cylinders, though, they work only on the resealable cylinders. So they are not really an answer.

I have never had a problem getting the threaded cylinders in France in the last 5 years.
All the major supermarkets stock them, as do Decathlon and other sports outlets.

This adapter should work with the piercable cylinders: http://www.hitchnhike.co.uk/acatalog/edelrid_c206_puncture_cartridge_adapter.html

We have one of those adapters.  Don't have much call to use it, but I'd take it touring.
Getting there...
