What is it then? We've waited long enough!

Keep up!  We talked about this last Wednesday!  ;D

As my Cunning Plan TM came to nought, and in the absence (currently) of any other Cunning Plans TM, it was suggested we fall back on the tried and tested formula of previous years.  That being, we meet in 'spoons Witham for breakfast and beer (for those who want to), ride to a lunchtime venue (TBC) and then to The Spiritual Home for dinner, camping and the usual shenanigans.  You accepted the highest honour which can be bestowed on any living soul, assuming Jem doesn't want to make up for last (this) year.

Of course all the above is dependent on the coronavirus situation.

We normally rely on Archbishop Tomsk to confirm when Epiphany is each year, usually the first weekend in January, but next year that's 2nd and 3rd January so may be the following weekend.

Go on, have more than one.  A beer blanket is always nice when you are sleeping in a tent.

I need to sort out with Oaky how we manage to sit outside drinking champagne in freezing conditions while people turn up to scrounge.  Virtual scrounging is not easy.

I am half-tempted by the tent option but I am sure (literally) my other half will win out.

This was discussed yesterday evening by those of us at The Orange Tree.  Three Elders were present (me, Oaky and Tomsk) so I think it was a properly convened discussion.

Anyhow, how does Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th grab everyone?  As regards venues we thought breakfast at 'spoons Witham, then lunch somewhere (The Red Beret, Chelmsford was suggested  :demon: ), then dinner and camping at The Spiritual Home if they'll have us.

Wot do we think?

Also LEJOG 1400km, if that happens.

From my pov, the weekend before is a certain young person's 21st; the first weekend in July is Fenland Friends 600. How about 26/27 June?

What about 24th and 25th?

If LEJOG is on (latest email says the organiser is currently checking with controls - and the situation with different Scottish rules is another headache!) - then I'm aiming to stay on up north for a few days after, and tour back to Inverness for the sleeper. 5 days for the ride, then maybe 3 days recovery/tour - probably not home until after that weekend.

Or back to 10/11th July and I'll just do the main event on Saturday.

We spoke to the Landlord of the SH about this last week and he offered to lay on a fire festival in the grounds of his home.

The problem with a midsummer epiphany is there is too much other stuff going on.

That's not very helpful!  Can you make any of the dates others have already picked?  The idea is we have a date which is a clear winner to which we can add those who can make all the dates!

Hello folks...

So far 13 people have voted in the dates poll.  Although the 24the / 25th July is the most popular date only 6 people are going to turn up which possibly makes the event a bit lame.

If you haven't voted please do so.

I think the voting is telling us that not enough people are able to turn up on any particular date in that time period to make it the full experience rather than a particular date is best....

If the summer dates aren't working, perhaps something in September or October might be better for people, if you're aiming for quantity over quality. Or change to a format that'll work with fewer attendees.

At The Compasses yesterday evening it was decided that Epiphany would be Saturday 8th January (2022 obvs) and could well feature the ACME awards ceremony.  Clearly this is all contingent on COVID but at least we have a date to work towards.

 Re: A Combined Epiphany and Awards Evening - There's a precedent for this - set a few years ago now and it all adds to the fun, as the previous year's award winners have to carry their trophy around all day - and I have to lug a bag of medals and assorted ACME kit, mudflaps etc as well as a winter camping load! Plus of course very much not aero Christmas decorations. I think it was that year we hooned along a gravel byway up the Chelmer valley, nearly ending up in the Ford That Should Not Be Attempted, (and then climbing the steps to the footbridge), in the gathering dark ...

We should be able to use the Compasses tent, which will be up for Christmas and New Year, rather than be packed into the steamy Green Room as in the Before Times. So Lockdown Jackets and Woolly Hats will be the dress code.

There is a plan.  And the plan is we repeat  what we did in 2020 (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=109627.msg2455801#msg2455801).

The plan isn't set in stone yet as I'm still nailing down some details but I thought you'd be reassured to know there is a provisional plan at least.

More detail to follow as nails get driven home.

That's called recycling, which is a good strategy with our current climate.

As for the quiz, expect something quite different. Plans on that are afoot.

I am also trying the track down The Musky Pelt of Destiny, it could be in Jem's airing cupboard.

Everyone in ACME, and our friends and Associates should have received a formal invitation to the Epiphany Extravaganza and ACME Awards Evening today. Some have proved hard to track down for GDPR reasons, especially if they haven't been active AUK points scorers in recent years. If anyone has been missed out, I apologise and would like to re-emphasize that All Are Welcome.

Please read...

Hello folks,

I have begun the process of planning Epiphany 2022.  Let's start with a basic timeline for those unfamiliar with previous events.  Before going any further it's important to emphasize SOMETHING IMPORTANT, whilst we'd love you to take part in the whole event you don't have to take part in every element, everyone has different tastes and commitments so just take part in some bits if that's what works for you.  So...

Breakfast - Witham 'spoons from about 0830hrs
Depart 'spoons - about 0930hrs
Elevenses - Butts Green Garden Centre - about 1100hrs
Lunch - The Chelmsford Club (108 New London Rd, Chelmsford, CM2 0RG) about 1300pm
Depart Chelmsford Club - after lunch
Arrive The Compasses - Littley Green (CM3 1BU) when it's dark

I have produced a DRAFT ROUTE (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38130022).

Please note that the above extremely detailed plan  ;D is subject to change.

I will need to know how many people are planning on joining for lunch so please can you PM me.

Love 'un stuff  :-*

On closer inspection I see you don’t go down Sporehams Lane.

And the Bury Lane ford in Great Waltham's a near-miss on your route: I've had an off there last year, and years ago, a spectacular whizz through at speed one cold but dry winter's morning, when I realised at the last minute that the approach was icy from vehicles dripping as they exited. No option but to avoid steering and braking - and still not sure how I stayed upright. I think I'll take the cautious old man's option of the footbridge in future.

For those who are not planning to ride standard bikes, I note that the barrier at 1.4km is going to be problematic. So I'll probably need to miss that section and regroup at 2.1km.

I'm not sure where the ford is. How accessible is the footbridge?

For the Chelmsford cycle paths, I think they all use bollards to limit access, which will be fine.

You'll be fine with that there's a barrier but a wide side part to it as the barrier is now in a hedge!  The only pictures I have of the ford are in the dark, but the footbridge is on the left as you come down.

It's not a very clown bike friendly route at the moment, but if you are doing it on Penelope then I might give it a go.

How did we make it over to Butts Green last time?

Meadgate Ave is awful esp the bit near Longfield (rows of parked cars and oncoming white van man) - we could use the route we used last time and collect Cpt Slow on route - there's even an Alpine pass climb we could use!

I've seen details of your bike ride cafe crawl, and have concocted a plan to ride over to Littley green instead and take the train home afterwards, but as far as I can tell from my train research I can put bikes on most trains from Chelmsford to London, but not the ones that originate in Norwich as those require a reservation. So how do I know which ones are OK? or are the rules not as rigorously enforced in Chelmsford as they are at Liverpool street?

If there's buffet car listed, it's a Norwich train for sure. I guess you can trace the train's route backwards to its origin, but I've never tried that - I'll take pot-luck as they're along fairly frequently. The 'right' ones are suburban commuter-type, not proper-looking ones with guards compartment. A railway expert will be along in a bit with chapter and verse, no doubt.

Hello you lovely, lovely people.

An important part of Epiphany is the awarding of the coveted Mid-Essex Mid-Week Nocturnal Series Award.  If you receive this award it's fair to say that you have topped out, you have achieved everything you will ever achieve in life, nothing you do in the future will ever better receiving the MEMWNS Award.

Here is what it looks like at the moment, sorry its a shit photo...

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51739276143_7cf98d990d_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mQ2jee)

Should you win the Award the rulz state you have to add a little something to it which is personal to your good self.  It is also required that the Award is proudly displayed in such a position in your house that all can see and admire it.  In the past the partners of some recipients have said such things as "You're putting that heap of crap on the fucking mantlepiece!"  Should this happen to you please refer your partner to a MEMWNS Elder, we have re-training programme, the problem will go away quickly and permanently.  I should add that the Award has holes in its base which can be used to screw it to a mantlepiece.

Anyhow, the time has come for you to send your nominations for the 2022 winner to BFC who is the current holder.  The current holder, BFC, is entirely responsible who 2022 holder should be, he can even give the ward to himself.  You may nominate yourself, you may offer bribes and other inducements to BFC, your nominations can be as elaborate as you like.  There's also no need to stick to the truth, lies, mis-information and fanciful notions are perfectly acceptable.

BFC will announce his decision and handover the Award during the evening segment of our Epiphany event.

Thank you for your time  :-*

 All set? I'll be doing some bike decoration soon and sorting out the camping gear, plus the medals and trophy side of things.

Just to re-emphasise: ALL WELCOME, regardless of ACME membership, SR status and so on. The camping isn't compulsory! Having checked out the Compasses tent, it's reasonably warm and draught-proof (but you'll probably need your Big Lockdown Coat) and should fit in many more than the Green Room. I hope there will be no more surprise government rules this week, but obviously a lateral flow test on the day would be a good idea ...

Might see if the kids fancy sprucing up the bike with lights and stuff.

In isolation at present (for the 2nd time over Christmas!) Should be out in time for Sat but doubt I'll camp. I was thinking of booking a room but website says its full so might just ride home later.

Thanks for the route, OD - I reckon I'll meet you at the Butts Green garden centre if that suits you?

Cunning Plan Update...

Lunch is now at the Queens Head, Boreham   Which the more enlightened of you will know isn't very far from Witham but we need to take a fair chunk of the morning to ride to via the coffee stop at Butt's Green.  Expect the published route to be amended with some twists and turns  ;D

I need to know as a matter of some urgency whether you can make it for lunch.  For those who don't know, the QH has outdoor semi-heated seating options and there is ample bike parking.

Also I would urge anybody planning on joining this year's Epiphany Extravaganza to lateral flow test yourself before turning up.  As organiser I don't want any snotty phone calls from Sir Chris Whitty next week.

I'm about 10/90

It's not C19 concerns, it's just a feeling it will not be quite like it should be with so few attending (I realise I am not helping), being outdoors all day and evening before camping, LFTs, etc

That said, after a few days back at work, I might be looking for some entertainment.

OK, I hear folk's concerns, what I don't want to do is mess around The Compasses and Queen's Head.

I've just had a chat with Tomsk who is looking after the ACME awards side of things and we think it might be worth giving people until Thursday evening to decide what they want to do and decide whether the event will go ahead or not.  Therefore we will be able to give our venues 24 hours notice of cancellation.

What do we think?

Me again...

Just spoken the the QH at Boreham and they are fine with me either confirming numbers or cancelling on Friday morning.  They did mention that the covered semi outdoor area where we have sat on a Wednesday evening is now fully enclosed so warmer but still well ventilated so might be a safer option than being in their restaurant.

I'm up for the meal at the Compasses in a ventilated place.

I'm inclined to forego the daytime activities at this time ... I have urgent work to my garage that must be completed this weekend which would benefit from an extra day being available (the roofers come in during next week), plus the prospect of a damp ride and semi-outdoor stops is not too appealing.

UPDATE, PLEASE READ...

Epiphany got discussed yesterday evening at The Swan and the consensus was that Epiphany 2022 should be cancelled  :'(

However, we have a new concept, that being "Epi"  ;D

Its quite straightforward, meet at Witham 'spoons anywhere between 0830 and 1000 hrs for breakfast and a cheeky beer if the mood takes you, then depending on who is there and how everyone feels we set off for a leisurely ride towards a lunchtime venue for some more nosh and maybe something wet after which everyone goes home.  The forecast for Saturday afternoon isn't great so hopefully we can all get home before being drenched.

So, just turn up and we'll play it by ear

Well the formal Epiphany Ride may have been cancelled but five of us enjoyed our "Epi" day out.

Many of the usual faces were missing for various reasons:

Fandango - eating Yorkies, running over hedgehogs
Toby's Dad - claims January is a busy month for him
Grey Sheep - snotters blinding
Not Grey Lamb - also claims January is a busy month
Oaky - injured in bizarre pogo stick incident
Andy C333333333 - too many rules for our resident anarchist
Psyclist - tinkering in his man cave
Jem - won't leave Witham
Not Nik Not Nick Not Nik's Nick Nor even Nick's Nik - grounded
Josser - plague ridden

Fortunately, Tomsk, Huggy, OD and the BFC (Retd.) were all waiting for me in Witham 'Spoons when the headwind and pelting rain finally released me into the warmth.  I arrived to find the sampling had already started with a carefully curated selection of breakfast beers (Otter's Amber) and Huggy almost in tears at the unfairness of the egg that had been missed from his breakfast - a feeling not helped when my breakfast arrived swiftly and eggful.

Tomsk and I knew how bad it was outside and the others were looking apprehensively out of the window as the raindrops bounced off the pavement.  Tomsk is Tomsk though and there was no way we weren't going on a bike ride.  Somewhat unhelpfully, OD decided to get involved with Tomsk's route planning.  That could only mean a leg-sapping combination of gratuitous hills (at one point we climbed Blue Mills and then dropped back down Station Road to end up 200 yards from the start of our climb), COR (including a particulary muddy slog along past Beeleigh Falls), pointless circling away from the eventual destination just as you think you are nearly there and feeling ashamed at being left behind by Tomsk on his two wheel drive tractor bike.

Of course it wasn't nearly as bad as we thought and it was all good fun.  I did get my revenge for the gratuitous climbs by taking so long to reach the top that everyone else was frozen by the time I got there.

Aesop's Fables for the Modern Day

An Artist comes to a kissing gate with his bike.  He delicately moves through but is forced to release the gate which springs heavily into the Telecoms Sales Executive's shins as he blunders in behind the Artist.  Meanwhile the Smug Engineer waits for the gate to spring back before pulling it outwards to allow the Retired Twiddler and the Scribe to walk through easily and unharmed  The Artist and Telecoms Sales Executive can only look at the Smug Engineer's smug grin as he strides through the gate.

Kissing gate negotiated, we headed through the mud to Maldon and the welcome warmth of the Carpenter's Arms.  There we sampled Yakima Gold and Old Bob but forgot to have an Oscar Wilde Mild when the landlord decided to heat his cottage pie up and we realised how hungry we were in a pub that didn't serve food.

Off to Maldon 'Spoons we sped.  With Ruddles at 99p and a handful of CAMRA vouchers, we felt like millionaires there.  So confident were we that we cleared a table of beers and bookie's slips onto a different table so we could sit in the warmest part of the pub - "the guys from the boxing club won't be happy when they see their table" chirped the blokes at the next table along but we were too busy selecting snacks and quaffing Old Thumper to care.

Enjoyable as it was, here's to next year and a proper traditional Epiphany Ride with after party, camping, musical interludes, ghost pint spills and everything else we love about it.

Nicely done ted.  Epi was almost as much fun as Epiphany.  Let's hope that the world is more accommodating in 12 months time.

 Despite the rain it was a good day out, with more beer than riding really, in true Epiphany style. But still I managed to clock up 54 miles and get home in time to make an only very slightly late family dinner.

Recalling the kissing gate incident still brings a smile: nobody likes a smart arse!  ;D

Still not convinced my digestive system will survive the assumptions/school dinner catering offerings on LEL, confirmed by Saturdays exploits.

Meanwhile the Smug Engineer waits for the gate to spring back before pulling it outwards to allow the Retired Twiddler and the Scribe to walk through easily and unharmed  The Artist and Telecoms Sales can only Executive look at the Smug Engineer's smug grin as he strides through the gate.

Great write-up as usual and well done to you all for braving the elements.

Out of isolation now and looking forward to getting out of the house!!

Hello

Epiphany has already been discussed elsewhere but time to formalise discussions, here goes...

Saturday 7th running into Sunday 8th January has been discussed although ted said he'd be skiing so wondered about the 21st.  How do people feel about each date?

Also, it was mooted that the evening programme would include Tomsk's ACME Awards Ceremony.  But it was suggested that we might split the events to two separate dates as the audience for each event is different although there is crossover.  How do folks feels about this?

EDIT: we now have a poll!  Please cast your votes, remember folks died in for your right to participate in a democratic process  ;D

I want to come, but I don't care what day it is or what the format is?

Errr, good point, I suggest you don’t vote at all as I won’t be able to fettle the poll and will probably fook it up if I need. Zak OK?

It depends for me.

I would struggle to make the 7th, so if that weekend was picked for Epiphany then another for Tomsk awards evening would mean at least I could get to something.

I'm with Owen here. I'm not sure if I can attend, so I'm not going to vote, but if the awards night and Epiphany are separate events, then I'll probably make it to one of them.

Ahem….23rd and 24th are a Monday and a Tuesday ?

I won’t do the daytime thing anyway but would like to attend the awards ceremony.

I have a big occasion on the 27th and was thinking of a ride and social on the 28th.  We could build that in with a club ride, though.

Currently a very small turnout for the vote, and effectively nothing in it between 7th and 21st. Looks like it’ll come down to how much OD likes those who have said they cannot make the 7th. I’m sure they won’t begrudge any decision, in time.

Just re-read Tom's email and I'll be there and will either camp or ride home (no rooms available). When/where is the lunch? If I can make it, I will.

Happy New Year to you all. xx

I think to make this easier just let me know if you're wanting lunch.  It would be good to know by the end of this week so I can get a lunch booking in place.  BTW, has anyone got helpful suggestions as to where we can have lunch?

I think it'll be fine if folks just turn up at the Spiritual Home for evening eats.

What is the timing of the awards ceremony?  I’ve booked the Travelodge in Great Dunmow on the basis I won’t want to cycle all the way back home in Hertfordshire after some drinks.  But I should be able to wobble to Great Dunmow after the evening.

Wife is out, I’ll mention I’m heading over to this when she comes back in.

I'm juced to announce here our rough itinerary for the day...

Arrive 'spoons Witham sometime after it opens, avail yourself of food and drink.
Depart 'spoons 10AM
Arrive 11s at a time just after 11 - there will be a choice of location, either a Brewery or Cafe... I've not bothered checking them out, it'll be awesome I'm sure.
Depart there sometime just around 12
There's some gravel along this route, there will be a divert option that you can take to arrive at lunch - I am hoping to check it out on 30mm slicks and fixed tomorrow...
Arrive The Viper between 12:30 and 13:00 for a couple of hours...
Departing The Viper sometime before 15:00 we have an hour and half of riding to get to the evening destination of The Spiritual Home.

I hope you are as amped as me to get on your bike and wobble around next Saturday

With a bit of effort I can make it to this now as I will be in the Neighborhood (relatively speaking.) So hopefully it's not too late to attend the whole day.

No hype, just cold hard facts!  We have 18 for lunch already and a bunch more at The Spiritual Home in the evening.  If nothing else, Epiphany 2023 is going to be well attended!

Are many attending the evening session at the Spiritual Home with other half's ?

Lucy is supposed to be coming with me but if she likely to be the only one she will probably give it a miss.

The question for me now is: sturdy (slow) bike with Marathon Winters and the potential for carrying a ton of warm winter gear, trophies etc or fixed with rather less luggage capacity ...

Anyway, both bikes fettled and now cleaner than they've been since about October. This may be a last-minute decision when I wake on Saturday morning!

I've just looked at the route and the weather forecast, looks like it will be *above freezing* for most of Friday and all Saturday.

I have a gritted route but it inevitably removes all the fun from the ride as  it's main roads on a Saturday morning with the traffic

I will still be on studs anyway as I CBA to swap over tyres again just for one day and I like the noise :D

Rough route is:
Depart 'spoons 10:00
Maldon Rd out of Witham to Does Corner
Ashfields to Hoe Mill
Along the Northern Escarpment of TMNH
Down Doggers Lane
Under the A12 in to Baddow for 11s, beer with coffee option, depart just before 12
Out via the Radar and up and down to Swan Lane, past the animals heading up again...
Along the COR to the old church
Along the road and then back under the A12 bringing us to The Viper. ETA just before 13:00
Depart around 15:00 for 26km through some lanes up a road to more lanes, past some animals and arrive at SH for just before 17:00

For anyone not wanting to tackle the tame COR and miss out on the animals they can head on from Swan Lane basecamp to Ivy Barns and then follow that to The Viper, you'll probably arrive 10-15mins before us though :)

(times based on about 19kph)

 I'll be doing the Epiphany camping for the first time in a while.

If jibers is staying with the crunchy tyres, I'll do likewise and we'll annoy everyone in stereo - the Venerable Dawes is a much better bike for laden COR, plus my nice-but-probably-still-icy early morning ride in to the 'spoons is preferable to the Braintree and Notleys gritted route.

Don't worry, if you can squeeze into the outfit you wore on your stag it doesn't count as "dressing up".  In fact, it's compulsory.  If it's a choice between your blonde bombshell outfit (how proud your mother in law looked) and your brown corduroy suit, I'd go with blonde bombshell every time. You can also keep my +1 entertained - do you speak Russian ?

As we know it's by no means guaranteed that your +1 will turn up.  However my contacts in the intelligence community have alerted me to some unusual aircraft movements in the St Petersburg area so you might be in luck.

Was great to see everyone on Saturday, albeit very briefly - conditions were pretty sketchy getting to the Compasses, so it was the right decision to cautiously limp the 50k home before things got any colder. Sorry I couldn't stick around for the awards, or catch up properly with everyone, it looked like it was shaping up to be an excellent evening and was very well attended. Hope everyone who camped had enough warm clothing (and beer in the system) to be comfortable, and that everyone cycling home did so safely

I've never liked loose ends so here's a quick round up of the 2023 event.  By the way, thanks for everyone who took part and helped out, you're all amazing  :-*

As tradition dictates we started with breakfast in 'spoons, Witham.  Then it was off to the Chelmsford Brew Co for elevenses and The Viper for lunch.  Temperatures hovered around freezing and ice on the roads was a major challenge.  After lunch with snuff we set off into the dusk for The Compasses, Littley Green for more shenanigans and a prize giving.

Tomsk and I camped overnight in the Compasses garden with Elliot in his Landy plus BFC and Arabella in a camper van.  Temperatures dropped to minus 4.

We were also joined by special guests:
