I loved the realism, warmth and humanity of her books. Alfie’s mum was clearly a hippy and the illustrations were of kids who probably had snotty noses.

Real children - messy and chaotic (and fun). Our cats are named after Shirley Hughes children - Alfie, even as a now rather middle-aged moggy, still plays 'Alfie Gets In First' in a race to the back door, often pretending he isn't playing then blasting through at the last-minute.

Her books were among our boys childhood favourites, along with Mairi Hedderwick's Katie Morag series.

Loved the 'What Do Artists Do All Day' programme on BBC4 fairly recently.

When I first met my friend Pen, in 1976, she lived in a house which reminded me very much of Alfie's house, with the steps leading up to the front door.

She also gave us the fabulously-titled Dogger.
