What was the first album you bought with your own money?

Following on from the fillums thread, what was the first album you bought with your own money?

In common with countless teenage boys of my generation, it would be:

The first album was probably a Deutsche Grammophon cassette of Martha Argerich playing Chopin.

Then the first popular beat combo was probably Madness' first album One Step Beyond.

The single was by Chuck Berry, really cool. My Ding-A-Ling, maybe not.

I'm not sure what i actually bought as had loads of tapes of albums I was given as copies which I have since bought. For some reason I'm thinking Beulah when your heartstrings break

I honestly can't remember. As albums were fairly expensive they were either christmas or birthday presents. Of course plenty of albums found their way out of my parents dusty collection (the cool stuff from the 60s) and into mine. And likewise many came from my older sister's collection when something she bought suddenly became uncool a week later! Oh and everyone was taping each others records at school. But as for the first with my own money... no idea. It would have almost certainly come from Parrot records - the coolest record store in town, which of course closed about 30 years ago when the likes of HMV and Our Price moved in...

It's traditional to confess to something that foretells a future of achingly vital music, an essential foretelling of sound music taste to come. So it should be no surprise that the first album I bought was Mr Mister's Welcome to the Real World (on compact cassette from Woolies).

Deep Purple in Rock. My older bro was convinced I was simply buying it so that I would appear to be cool to him.

My first single was Juicy Lucy with 'Who do you love'. Mrs hatler bought it for me last Christmas (she's a Lucy). Got to get that one framed for hanging on the wall.

A cheap MFP knockoff of a Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger album of stuff before they did 'Wheels On Fire'. Shortly after that, the first proper (full priced) album I bought was the Edgar Broughton Band's 'Wasa Wasa', then I took it back to the shop and exchanged it for 'Hot Rats': one unhappy salesperson, one very happy punter

That was the first LP I bought.   Everything prior to that was on cassette.  Probably "A Tonic For The Troops" by the Boomtown Rats.

Second hand (and probably stolen from WH Smiths where the security was rubbish): A Night At The Opera, Queen and Venus and Mars, Wings.
Legit and on cassette, A Nice Pair, Pink Floyd and Ziggy Stardust, Bowie. These latter two with 18th birthday money as my parents gave me a radio/cassette player to take away to university.

With my own money was either Never Mind the Bollox or Boys Don't Cry (can't remember whether I used my own money or not for Never Mind the Bollox - I can defo remember paying for BDC as it was the princely sum of 20DM).
