Why is beer a laxative ?

Especially proper real ale ? I guess it's something to do with the yeast in it but why does it work ? Had been a bit bunged up the last few days and yesterday afternoon sat on the grass outside the pub with friends and had three pints of Landlord and today ...
Always works and much gentler than any of the stuff from the chemist (well unless you drink a gallon). But why exactly does it work ?

Sadly the modern stuff, though still good, has been toned down somewhat and doesn't have quite the same effect.

Cant just be the sugar as larger doesn't work half as well as proper bitter.
