I reckon this ride needs to be resurrected (remove the stake, pour blood on the ashes, have a pig go past Castle Dracula playing a banjo onna Tuesday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NIB1owd13g) etc..).
It's always been a lot of fun - start at York Station at midnight again? The route was always pretty much Stamford Bridge-Malton-Pickering-Saltergate Bank-Blue Bank and into Whitby with a group decision on whether to follow the main road from Staithes, or to nip along the Esk and over the harbour. I wonder whether it's worth adding a few more lanes to dodge Pickering, as it's not really worth going into town, and I recall a few people commenting that the route was a bit short at 50 miles or so.
The halfway stop has always been an issue - I'll be happy to fetch a stove and brew up some water, and I'm sure we'll have a few cakemakers along. Unless anyone knows any 24-hour services round Malton/Pickering (routing out to Seamer McDonald's would be a bit too much of a dog-leg).
From Whitby, you can get a train back to Middlesbrough fairly easily, or negotiate your way onto one of the tourist steam services which go back to Pickering, then ride to Malton for a train. The only gotcha with trains is that TPE now insist upon bike reservations, which have to be booked 24 hours in advance but you can book up to 15 minutes in advance, if there's space (https://www.tpexpress.co.uk/travelling-with-us/travelling-with-a-bike), and this would affect services from Middlesbrough and Malton. From Boro, Grand Central Services to York are still very bike-friendly, though.
Anyone fancy it?
PS Forgot to say - fancy dress is not compulsory, but definitely encouraged. I believe only one rider actually dressed themselves, and it's mainly been homemade tat-on-a-bike. Or not-tat, in the case of Nikki's Trumps the Ghost (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=70801.msg1589451#msg1589451). Can she get the colour shift to co-ordinate with her GPS this year? There's only one way to find out.
ETA: this will be a social ride, probably taking 6-7 hours to get to Whitby, and I'll ask around for someone to act as Tail End Charlie (or do it myself), and we'll regroup at significant points.
EFTA: likely route here (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30757854). I've re-routed through Thornton-le-Dale to keep it a bit lanier, and the finish is along the Esk and back over the swing bridge, though as usual we can re-group in Sleights to decide which way to take into Whitby (the main road is the sensible option if it's early, and then you get the howling descent into town).
I think there'll be eleven of us:
Deano
Graeme
Markcjagar
Andyoxon
Debs (notp)
Boab
Arminius
EllysH + 1
Col (notp)
yorkie
Bring your own hot drinks if you want for the half-time stop, which will be Thornton-le-Moor. Some cake will be brought, but I'd recommend fetching along at least some snacks, as there will be nowhere open en route.
In Whitby, we'll aim for the Singing Kettle, but the 'Spoons is just down the alley as a backup.

Traditionally that's the weekend of my annual chest infection, but I've put it in the calendar...
-
A lot of fun except the year you didn't turn up and we had a deluge and a gale.
I think TPE reservations can now be made at 10 minutes notice.

Damn, what a shame I missed that :D
Awesome about TPE - they have updated their website too: https://www.tpexpress.co.uk/travelling-with-us/travelling-with-a-bike

That is my dear wife's birthday. I wonder if she fancies celebrating in style?
-
That would be fabulous, Wow. I haven't seen you or Jan for yonks.
-
Friday night you say? Hmmm.
-
I quite like a bit of goth. Also Mrs And Misses Dan are going away that weekend. I need to work out whether I’m needed to help or better off out of the way :)
-
Interested, as potentially I could be in Scarbs and train to York, then cinder back to Scarbs. OOI what is the weather 'generally' like?
-
I believe it was a Dark and Stormy Night in 2016...
(Otherwise, generally balmy with a stonking tailwind).
-
I can vouch for the extreme lack of tailwind in 2016. It's put me off attempting this ride again! :hand:

I owe that ride a lot. It was one of the rides that cured me of my audax affliction.
-

I am afraid that my dear wife is far too sensible to do a night ride. However, I suppose I could give her a birthday treat of a long weekend in Whitby. I could do it and she could meet us for breakfast...

How many miles is it?

How many miles is it?
Horizontally, or vertically?

50-55 miles, assuming the usual route (with minor variations).

Ah, I remember now - I rode the helpers ride' for my 200 on the Friday, and got snowed on somewhere on the route, and as it took two pints of Old Peculier at Masham to ruin revive me, I decided to bail out of the overnight ride.
But it's October this year and not November, remember.

Asked as I haven't ridden anything for ages and thought that it might something nice to look forward to as I haven't been to Whitby.

I've popped a request in for the Saturday off work, I'd like to join all y'all.
-
I'm interested in this too, other commitments permitting. I've put it in the diary.
-
Yup - I'm off work on 26th, so could do a ride to the Goths - officially in my diary I've already started thinking about glowing bicycle decorations.
-
Might join you for this, if that's okay?
-
Received an "are you mad?", when mentioning this ride... ;) But it looks like I can make it. So that's a provisional, I'm in...
-
Excellent, Andy.
And you'd be most welcome, Mark (and anyone else). It's a social ride. At worst, we'll regroup occasionally, and I'll get someone to play Tail End Charlie.
-
Taken the plunge and bought a Scarbs-York rail ticket (£8), with bike reservn...

Is it that hilly?

The GPS route says about 800m of elevation, which isn't super hilly. Knowing the area though, there's probably a couple of steep climbs.

There is one short steepish climb.
The rest are long gradual drags, best done in a low gear (with warm clothes, it is always much, much colder than you expect). The stops are exposed and you definitely need a couple of extra layers to pop on at those.
Downhills are steep because North York moors are weird that way (the northern slopes are steep and the southern slopes are gentle). Two of the downhills can't really be run full no-brakes; a turn with a humpback bridge right at the bottom of one and a very tight right-hander halfway down the other (although tadpole recumbents can get down this at over 50mph).

I clearly don't know the area as well as I thought I did.
My autumn jacket is currently half unsewn, had best get that done.

Wow
I can confirm I'll come along, and my partner too. (Not a forum member, but a paid up Fridays member)
-
I'm a definite no, Deano. Unfortunate, or I'd take the kelly kettle along. Too far away, too busy (and I think my legs would die of shock if they saw a hill now).
-
I'm a possible, verging on a probable. Given I live in York, I can probably find the start! :-D
If Karla comes along, we can amuse you bore you witless with tales from the Uni electronics lab!! Well, for the 30 seconds it takes for him to drop me!! ;) ;)
-
I'm definitely still in, currently searching for blinken lights to tape to bike. 11pm at Tap? A little earlier maybe? 10? When's last orders these days?
-
I'm thinking of riding down to Scarbados on the Saturday for a Northern rail train back to Brough.
-
I should be at York Stn at around 10:45pm on the Fri.
I'm thinking of riding down to Scarbados on the Saturday for a Northern rail train back to Brough.
Scarbs-bound on Sat, I'd had been pondering something like cinder - road - cinder? https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31235693
-
I've done the cinder and have no burning desire to return and experience those delights again. The A171 from Whitby no longer holds any fear for me but I do think it'll be traffic-y on a Saturday, so the cinder is a good traffic free alternative.
-
Not confirmed with Mrs. JonJo yet but think I'll be in Scarborough that week so could get the train to York on Friday evening, ride back to Whitby then take the cinder track back to Scarborough in daylight.
-
Early hours of Saturday 26th in NYM area has popped on to the long range forecast... https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2640312 OOI ;) sunrise in Whitby on 26 Oct is 07:51 (https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@2634135?month=10&year=2019), which is nearly as late as it gets for a non-winter (<1 Dec) ride. Clocks of course going back on 27 Oct...
JonJo, my plans too - I'm in Scarborough Fri - Sun.
-
Mrs. JonJo informs me that I'll be in Edinburgh celebrating best mates 60th birthday and how could I have forgotten it?
Dammit, will have to cancel Scarborough booking and mebbe lose money - also bought skellington mask :(
-
What is the hive mind's opinion about mudguards on this ride? The bike I would want to ride does not have any, and I'm not sure I would have time to get any bought and fitted beforehand. My bum would be partly protected by the small saddle bag, but anyone behind would be in the firing line if the roads were wet.
-
Mudguards are good for two things - being nice to the person on your wheel, and being nice to cafes and other places where you intend to park your (wet) bum.
If it's anything like 2016, guards will be academic against wind-blown rain/sleet. Also - the only place you're going to be sitting down indoors is at the end, so just take a carrier bag to sit on - you'll be fine.
-
Mudguards or not is fine (I think Mr Legge had a thing about them, but it's not a problem either way). It'll be a social ride, probably without any pacelines, so you could ride along chatting next to someone.
Pleased to see that Chris has taken the "Slow"coach role of predicting DOOM in the weather. Cheers, Chris!
I'll PM everyone my mobile number tomorrow and try to to cobble together a start list. Sorry it's gone a bit messy.
Couple of things - for the stop at Thornton, are we OK with bringing our own warm drinks for those that want them? I will bring some cake, and would appreciate anyone else baking.
And anyone fancy being ride leader/tail end Charlie? I can do one but not both, and I think we'll have enough to need both.
-
6-day weather prospect seems encouraging. I can bring some tray bake drizzly offering. Bike thermos will have an outing...
-
I will have cake(s) and a flask (the thermos kind) but there's no point in me offering to be either TEC (0 mechanical skillz) or ride leader (minor left /right confusion).
Any cake requests usually provided for.
-
I'm not bringing cake. I might bring a flask. I accidently discovered rum and raisin flapjack on today's Wiggy 100... Very warming. I wonder if pure rum would be a good idea.
Still not sorted flashing fairy lights for bike. Also, today's rain really hammered my mechanicals - some TLC is needed before Friday.
-
I'm afraid i'm out, as the family need me near the south coast on Saturday afternoon. Shame, was kinda thinking of joining in with the goths too :)
-
That's a shame dan, but it's quite a long way! Somebody will beat TimO's record of furthest distance from home, I'm sure, but it doesn't look like this ride.
I think there'll be eleven of us:
Deano
Graeme
Markcjagar
Andyoxon
Debs (notp)
Boab
Arminius
EllysH + 1
Col (notp)

Should be able to manage without a TEC. I'll make sure we regroup from time to time (usually, we regroup a couple of times in the lanes, then in Malton, obviously at the tea stop in Thornton, then probably at the top of Saltergate and Blue Bank. We have also stopped on the descent of Blue Bank in Sleights, to decide which route to take into Whitby, but we'll see what sort of time we're there).
Cake in the oven, I'll do the rest on Friday.
-
Unfortunately I'm out too ( :'() - my little sister has invited herself over for the weekend (). It'll be nice to see her, but she could have picked a more convenient weekend!
Hope it all goes well and I look forward to reading the ride report. Fingers crossed this becomes a bit more of a fixture and I can do it next time.
-
The forecast goes look good!
What do others plan to decorate their bikes with? I'm searching for inspiration.
-
Metoffice forecast (Pickering) is dry, BBC is wet atm; hoping for a Metoffice win...
Decorating my bike with a large diffused fixed red LED and reasonably high intensity white LED. ;D However I do plan to go for an understated steampunk look. ;)

Spooky (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191021/d7e980852552b6571384e7ceaa91e658.gif)
-
That's a face mask, yes?
-
Couple of people asking me about the weather - I know as much as you lot!
The ride is still going ahead, just bring rain gear, spare dry clothes and whisky. I'm working on a backup (probably head to Seamer McD's if we get to Malton or Thornton and it's really grim).
See you all in York.
-
I'm totally up for this. Rain wear if necessary - cheerful disposition as always! :-)
See you all soon!
G.
-
I've screwed up. I can't afford to go anymore, which means I'm letting Deano down and letting others down. I'm so sorry. - I was really looking forward to this, got blinking lights for the bike and everything.
I'm sorry.
:(
-
Sorry, everyone, it's off.
-
Hi Deano,
I couldn't have done this ride anyway because of a family commitment but if its re-scheduled to an alternative date I'd probably be up for it,- dependent on work as my new job requires me to work 1 in 3 weekends.
-
Well, the Goths won't be back until April! And I think that's a quieter affair. Maybe try again next year.
-
I wasn't due to be riding, but looking out the window from my nice warm dry living room - there's very little chance I'd want to go out in this. It's heaving down.
-
I wasn't due to ride, either, but just when I was starting to get a bit jealous at missing another drenching...
The WGW is on from 30th October-1st November next year. Riding on the Friday would mean arriving in Whitby on actual Halloween!
-
The batteries will have died by then.
-
I didn't make it up to Scarboro' in the end. Shame the ride didn't go ahead; seems like it was pretty wet though. Will store my steampunk artefact somewhere safe...
