Subsituting ingedients

If you want to make flapjack and find that you have run out of oats do not try substituting them for an equal weight of Ready Brek.

This has been a public service announcement - thank you for your attention.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

If your vegetable stocks are low but your pears are past their best, cut them up and chuck them into your stew instead of carrots...

If you peel and deseed cucumber, it will pass for melon in a fruit salad.

Reminds me of the one about how if you hold your nose and bite into an onion, you’ll think it’s an apple.

I’ve never felt the need to test this theory.

I did try with oatmeal instead of oats once. Tasted fine but had the consistency of...

Got stew that could do with a bit of thickening, but don't have any cornflour to hand?
Stir in a handful of cornflakes.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Intriguing!

I have used porridge oats for thickening stews on occasion. Not Ready Brek though.

If you are making Lentil Soup and you find that you have run out of vegetable stock, please do not substitute with a can of anchovies.

Can someone please tell Mrs Flatus.

Or cilantro for coriander.

More generally, erbs make a good substitute for herbs.

Mentioned this to MrsT and she replied "UK-grown melon, certainly".
