Audax Dictionary Help
« on: 08 March, 2020, 09:28:36 am »
Having read the words ‘Grandee’ and ‘Ancien’ recently, I confess they are new audax words to me despite having learned french and having lived there for 4 months.

In terms of audax, what do they mean please?

An ancien/ ancienne du PBP is a PBP finisher. More generally, a ‘been there, done that’, experienced, long-term audaxer.

Thank you. Anyone know what ‘grandee’ means?

I don't think it means anything in Audax terminology.  It's a Spanish/Portugese term for someone aristocratic or high up the pecking order.

Grandee is a term from politics rather an audax. It's normally used for older, influential politicians within a party (e.g. "Tory grandee"), especially those that don't hold a *formal* powerful political post.

I think AUK should avoid hierarchical terminology.  We're just riding bikes over tediously long distances.

But I’ve got nothing else to boost my poor, fragile ego, particularly since I’ve been on the audax treadmill for a while now and have become correspondingly slower.

Veteran would cover both words.
I am often asked, what does YOAV stand for? It stands for Yoav On A Velo

Well, veteran is how ‘ancien’ is normally translated in other contexts, eg ancien combattant, so that makes sense.

But I’d have thought ‘grandee’ had more of a sense of ‘high rank’. I’ve never heard it used in French though.

Too modest. If anyone in this game is both a grandee and an ancien...

Yeah, I was an Ancien before I became a veteran.

You might like to qualify as a venerable (although I have never heard it used in an audax context; it's used more by my children I would like to think as a sign of respect for great age and wisdom - although I may be missing their drift a little bit  ??? )

If I need great age or wisdom to become venerable, I fail on both criteria.
