Convert GoogleMap to GPX?
« on: 22 September, 2013, 03:59:48 pm »
It seems to be my day for posting questions  :)

I'm working on a DIY 200k route, now I've finished I was just wondering what utilities are available to convert a Google Map to a GPX other than GoogleMap CueSheet? URL below for any poor soul who's been manually transferring to routable maps:
http://winthefight.org/cuegle//googlemap_cuesheet.html

It's a great tool but you have to break up longer routes into digestible pieces and then do an, admittedly simple, cut and paste.

I use KML2GPX, does just what it says,  it had no problem with a 800 km touring route. Save the Google maps route as a KML  file and choose it to convert.

I hadn't heard of that one, always good to know of another tool out there, although for straight conversions I usually use http://www.gpsies.com

The point I should have mentioned was the CueSheet site also automatically generates a route sheet too, I always like the back up of a good route sheet and while it can be a bit verbose it does come in handy at times  ;D  I don't know of another site that generates route sheets from a map - are there any more?

Try http://ridewithgps.com It's very good, using google maps but with editable cue sheets and good GPS communication in both directions. It's good at producing brief audax style route sheets that can also be displayed on the GPS directly. My favourite bicycle route planning/logging site.

Jo - I have used RideWithGps in the past and it is a nice system, but with just a quick look I couldn't see how to generate a Route sheet from an imported map, perhaps I'll have a more in depth play with it at the weekend.

Manotea - If you look at the code you'll see that CueSheet is built upon the GmapToGpx script, you might want to check it out as CueSheet seems offer more features.

It seems that both scripts don't work with the new version of google maps, but then with the fondness google have for deleting popular services I guess we should be glad maps are still available :)
