Someone's finger under a microscope?  It's definitely epithelial, but beyond that I'm guessing.

No, no and no.

No microscopes were involved.

Mudflat under new water cover?
I'd offer you some moral support - but I have questionable morals.

Maybe an insect's wing?

Although not too sure about species.  The pattern is too regular for most...

Actually, I think Clarion may have got it.

But -- having finally managed to think about non-biological explanations -- I came here to suggest a crackled glaze on a piece of pottery.

No-one's got it yet. It is biological.

A slug?

No, not a slug.

Although no microscopes were involved, a lot of magnification was. I was being deliberately misleading ;D

Like Lindagordinho, I'm convinced it is -- in some way -- epithelial.

Upper surface of a leaf?  With a layer of (natural) wax over the top?  Again, seems slightly too regular, but...

That very thin layer of stuff between layers of onion?

(We looked at that at school, a couple of centuries ago...)

Just dropped into this thread. Looks very much like onion skin with a blue food dye.  Would have though that would have required microscopy to see though.

Yes, you've got it!

No food dye, David. I was pointing the camera at the sky to get a decent amount of light.

I had two 2x teleconverters, macro bellows and my 50mm lens on the camera - no microscopes involved! :)

Here's the setup I used:

The onion skin was sellotaped to a piece of card with a hole cut in it, which was blu-tacked to the front of the macro rails.
