How do blind people tell how strong their tea is?
« on: 04 April, 2008, 06:09:30 pm »
My better half has unearthed a Bertie Bassett mug from her past.

It's black.

I now realise I rely completely on sight to determine when to remove my teabag.

Black cup = can't tell.

As you were.

I mostly make tea in brown mugs. Neither David nor I like strong tea.
I add boiling water, dunk bag 3 times and remove it. I don't look for colour.
Seems to work OK.

Well, we put the boiling water into the pot with the requisite number of tea bags or scoops of leaves therein.  Wait 4 minutes and pour.

I'm only partially sighted - one sixtieth of normal sight but I guess the same rule applies to me.  ;D

I remember seeing a mug once that had a colour chart on it and some way for you to indicate to the tea maker how strong you wanted it!

My Mum is registered blind (ARMD, Glaucoma) and has the perfect solution. She doesn't drink tea.

I just keep on squishing and mixing the teabag around, until it's probably produced most of the tea-ness that it's going to.  Of course, this does produce a fairly strong cup of tea.
Actually, it is rocket science.

I think some people leave a finger in the cup, so they can tell how high the liquid level in the cup is. I could see how that would work, with the milk in first brigade, but with boiling water I think they just must develop asbestos fingers.

btw, colour only works for crap blended yukky tea.  A tea like Darjeeling for instance is pale even when fully brewed.   i.e. colour does not equal strength nor taste.

Blind people tend to use liquid level indicators, which hook over the side of the cup and bleep when the level of the liquid reaches the gadget. This only tells them to stop pouring though; it doesn't tell them how strong the tea is. I suppose they work it out by trial and error and then remember how long to leave it.

We use teapots.

The thing to do is mash the tea till you can't wait any longer; pour, then the next cup will be the right strength
Getting there...

I hate tea made in the cup (unless it's a green tea bag), to the point of refusal
