Contract deal for smartphone
« on: 18 January, 2011, 08:25:56 pm »
Having bought myself a smartfone I need a contract to allow me access to the internet etc on the move.   Currently I have an O2 Simplicity deal for 600 minutes and some text time, no data bolt on.

I'm after something for around £20 max per month with will give me similar call minutes and texts (or better) and also a data allowance.

Also, I'm a relatively light user so how much data allowance does the panel think that I will need please?

I'm not averse to switching provider for a good deal.

I just got a 12 month contract with T-Mobile for £10pm:

600m calls
600 texts
3GB internet (this is under review and will be reduced to 500MB in Feb)

You also get free booster packs for unlimited calls to landlines, etc which can be changed each month.

I'm not sure this is being advertised but can probably still be had by ringing them up.

Indeed it is.  I heard about the reduction 3 weeks after starting the contract.  I've now been told that I'll stay on 3GB till the contract ends.

From what I hear virtually all carriers will be down to 500MB soon.  Some kind of cartel stuff going on?

Most of the networks with 'unlimited' internet have had a fair use policy which states (usually buried away in the very, very small print) around 500MB a months is considered 'fair use'.  O2, for example, have been fairly open about this.

If you're a light user (see OP) 500Mb p m seems loads to me.  But O2's 100Mb for £1 per day - on their standard PAYG (no bolt on, no monthly payment) could be the best bet if you don't use the 3G daily.

O2 sold me a simplicity add on, for what ever they call unlimited interweb for a fiver a month, which seemed like the best deal at the time.

When I heard about the 500Mb limit last June, I called O2 to check how much use I clock up. I'm under 500Mb (adv 350Mb) and I think I'm in the heavy use area. So a light user will be under 500Mb for sure.
