Transport Manchester - Land's End
« on: 18 May, 2013, 03:38:34 pm »
Bit of a long shot question .... someone from the US has asked via my   www.cycle-endtoend.org.uk   website about getting from Manchester Airport to Land's End to start LEJOG.   To leave Manchester at about 1100 on Saturday 29 June - and get to LE that evening.

Trains have no bike spaces that day, one-way car rental isn't possible (I've checked - you can't do it at the weekend - and if you could the price is stupid)

So : that leaves a "taxi" or "man and a car" to take 2 people and 2 bikes - distance is about 350 miles each way.

Any ideas/offers/whatever please?

Thanks

Rob

I think it might be the branch times that are 'blocking' a hire car, if they need to start Sunday they are stuffed as most branches are shut.
If they can drop the car back first thing Monday then Enterprise is about £130 (2x£40hire per day and £50 one-way fee) for a VX Insignia/Mondeo - bags of room with back seats down for 2x bikes and touring luggage.

That's the problem .... they need to be cycling from LE AM Sunday

OK so they need to get a wiggle on and one way hire to Bristol Airport to drop car by 9pm on Saturday and then a train from Bristol may have cycle spaces?

that's quite a journey before a LeJoG.

Just as well they didn't fly into Edinburgh, England.
It is simpler than it looks.

MAN to BRS is about 3.5 hrs by car, bike to station about an hour so 17:44 Cross Country train from Temple Meads might work! and it appears to have bike spaces, gets into Penzance at 21:43 so think a taxi might be required to LE !

They can just ride from Penzance to LE!

You mean "London Edinburgh Airport"

It's just a matter of time until we get "London Baikonur" and "London Kennedy"...

Back on topic, what's the going rate for a man with a van?

... or given the distance/comfort requirement "man with a car that can carry a couple of bikes" - the real issue is that it's a 700 mile round trip.

National Express can carry bikes. They run from Manchester Airport to Bristol for example in about 5 hours, haven't looked any further.
