Garmin Nuvi; won't start after re-naming maps
« on: 30 June, 2008, 07:15:23 pm »
Anyone on here got any idea as I've not heard back from garmin.

Basically, I've renamed the map that my Garmin (Nuvi 200W) works from. I then re-started the unit and all it does is to come up with an error message telling me that the unit is useless without maps. It doesn't appear to be possible to close this message and my PC doesn't detect the device until some later stage in the boot order of the device.

I've tried loading a basemap onto an SD card, but that doesn't make any difference.

Does anyone have any ideas?

How about a Hard Reset or Cold Restart or variations on this name, ie something that resets the device back to it's original brand new state?

This discussion has some suggestions on how to do it for a Nuvi 200w.

(ps If this doesn't work, or totally fubars things even more, It's Not My FaultTM).
Actually, it is rocket science.

thanks for the tip Tim, but I just spoke to the Garmin tech support guy and the unit's screwed. I now need to send it back to them to re-install the mapping.

Bah.

That's just poor software design if you ask me.

It's a poor design that lets you do something so seemingly innocuous and which bricks the entire unit.  This sort of thing seem to be becoming all too common in modern designs though.

As far as I can see my Satman GPS will let me delete the mapping (£100 worth) off of the memory card.  It won't work on any other memory card, so why don't they just provide the data on a read-only card, or at least make that file undeletable ?  Needless to say I haven't tried this yet!
