Because Indie music is, by it's nature, not all that publicised I thought I'd use this thread as a place for people to link to indie music that's not widely known.

Have any of you lot ever heard of Mae? I listened to their albmun "The everglow" every day for about 2 months last year. It found it to be really good because each song lead on fromt the previous such that it was like a story and the intensity changed as it all went on too. Finally, it had some great high tempo turbo tunes on it!

I have a colleague who is into "indie". He asked me for a copy of Pink Floyd's "Run like Hell" once as he thought it was brilliant.
I never thought of Pink Floyd as an Indie Band ;D.

I saw Devotchka on Late with Jools the other night, one song in particular I really liked, can't remember what it was called though. They certainly had an interesting look, I have haven't seen many other bands featuring someone playing a tuba (or something similar) with Christmas lights all over it!
My favourite band at the moment is Band of Horses, so that's my recommendation :)

My definition of 'indie' is pretty much any guitar-based band who aren't noisy enough to be 'rock' :)

The Pale Saints! One of my favourites from that time, along with Ultra Vivid Scene and Galaxie 500. I went to school with a guy who was related to the owner of 4AD, so he used to get all the stuff before release... we were way too cool for school ;D

I also have two UVS albums (and two CD singles)!
Apparently it was "Pale Saints" without "The"; they used to get irate about this in interviews. They came from Leeds IIRC, not the kind of place you'd expect to find ethereal shoegazing music.

Two of my fave gigs ever are The Primitives supported by Pale Saints (UEA) and the 4AD double-header: Lush & Pale Saints (Norwich Arts Centre).
My recommendation to add to the thread is Lowlife (http://www.myspace.com/lowlifescotland) - vastly underrated Scottish indie band. To complete the 4AD theme, they featured Will Heggie, the original bassist from Cocteau Twins.

Galaxie 500 - fantastic, haven't come across anyone else who's actually heard of them before. On Fire is a top album.

I have it on the original on vinyl... it is utterly self-indulgent, mopey, whiny, often appallingly badly played - and really, really excellent. ;D
Much the same reason why I like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's first album - mix up Galaxie 500 and the Strokes and that's what you would get... :thumbsup:

An excellent book on this subject (a few of the bands in it have been mentioned - Dinosaur Jr, Minutemen, Beat Happening...) is Our Band Could Be Your Life (http://www.amazon.com/Our-Band-Could-Your-Life/dp/0316787531/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218647889&sr=8-1) by Michael Azerrad. It's a great read.
Mclusky seemed to be one of those bands that no-one had ever heard of. And, funnily enough, Future of the Left (Mclusky's former singer's current band) are playing Newcastle on Saturday. Hmm...

I find that Low vary in quality a lot. 'Things We Lost in the Fire' is stunning but everything I've bought/heard since has underwhelmed me :(

As, IMHO, most of the current crop of such bands e.g The Black Kids, Ting Tings etc etc.
One day we will get some decent bands that get into the charts, but I'm not holding my breath...

correct, but then became bastardised to mean those bands that could not get signed to large labels, but were, in effect signed to large labels (as large labels started creating small pseudo-indie labels which tended to have just one band signed to them(i.e. Terrorvision with total Vegas Recording, which was actually fully owned by Polydor, IIRC)). This moniker started to become debased a bit as the "indie" labels started to become as large as some of the smaller big players (Sub-Pop, Def Jam etc etc) and the gendre they covered widened, so you started to see dance, Soul, R&B etc etc labelled as Indie. It has now become so dilute that bands such as Franz Ferdinand were originally labelled Indie, even though they were signed to a major.

I used to follow Indie music in the 80s
Me and my sister even did a fanzine that lasted exactly one issue
In the 90s music of the Indie style and the Indie dress sense became mainstream
Fortunately for me I developed a liking for techno music at this point. I released a couple of records on a german label- that's indie!This scene remained underground until a few years later. Then I pretty much lost interest in comtemporary music and listened to jazz, ancient and country music.
Funny though last couple of years as music in the UK is now a different beast. The commercial and enthusiast wings used to be of different minds but now they have the same head. I can now listen to NME radio without it annoying 7 shades of shite out of me

Proper "indie" isn't a genre of music, it's an ethos.
Blur vs Oasis didn't totally kill indie, it just moved student-oriented guitar rock into the mainstream (including the Stereophonics, unfortunately, not to mention Shed Seven), so what was left to fly the flag for true indie music was the really interesting experimental stuff.
There is still true "indie" music about (look at Warp's online Bleep store, for example, to see how the indie ethos manifests itself these days - it's not all about myspace, spotify and itunes, none of which are really "indie" anyway) but that's not what this thread is about, is it? It seems to be more about a bunch of old fogeys reminiscing about the stuff they were listening to 20 years ago, in the same way that in the 80s my dad would reminisce about 60s music. Do you realise how old it makes you all sound?
Christ, I was as much of a shoegazer as anyone in 1991 - I still own all the early Ride and Slowdive EPs on vinyl - but I like to think I've moved on a bit since then.

Shoegaze is back in a big way, with some cross over from 1990s "intelligent" dance music (IDM).
Bands like Engineers and artists like Ulrich Schnaus and Fennesz are big fans of Slowdive! :)
I'm currently listening to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart which, like Glasvegas, draw on C86 indie, girl groups and (in this case) Belle and Sebastian. Good stuff. :thumbsup:

Engineers are great, and a lot more interesting than Slowdive ever were (even though they don't have a pretty girl band member). I have only a passing acquaintance with Ulrich Schnaus and Fennesz but I like what I've heard. I get most of my music recommendations from Radcliffe & Maconie on Radio 2 - which I suspect means I've completely lost touch with the cutting edge of new sounds. I've recently "discovered" TV On The Radio, but it pains me to learn that they've already been around long enough to have put four or five albums out.
I'm currently listening to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart which, like Glasvegas, draw on C86 indie, girl groups and (in this case) Belle and Sebastian. Good stuff. :thumbsup:

I'm currently enjoying the work of The Phenomenal Handclap Band very much - rock with a serious funk edge. A bit like Ladytron but less electronicy.

Wikipedia says the lead singer is called Marcus Mumford, but he's Marcus Johnstone according to their MySpace page. It was Fred Mumford in Rentaghost.

I've struggled to find a certain song for the last 3 months. I eventually found it today. Same band as above, but called Sweet Disposition. Turns out that they're becoming somewhat more well known than when I first came across them!
