The next showing of the Hackney Bicycle Film Society will be Ladri di Biciclette (Bicycle Thieves) will be on Monday the 8th November. Showings are not held in Hackney but are held at the Calthorpe Arms on Grays Inn Road so are in Central London. Membership is open to all and to apply for it you need only to e-mail hackneybicyclefilmsociety (at) gmail.com with your address and occupation.
Our show on Monday is also in support of the Save Herne Hill Velodrome Campaign Save the Herne Hill Velodrome and in addition to the main feature we will have the documentary Good Friday which was featured in last years Bicycle Film Festival. Maz Lewis the films maker will also talk about making the film and the Velodrome and Roddi Vaughan-Thomas of the Save the Velodrome campaign will speak on the Campaign and progress to date.

In December in addition to our normal show on the 13th we have a special show, on Friday 10th December is also open to none members. Iain Boal Bicycling Historian will be speaking to us on issues he raises in his forth coming book Green Machine which challenges the perception that bicycles are innately green and more efficient that any other mode of transport. He argues that to be efficient bicycles need paved roads and 19th cyclists were early proponents of road paving which literally paved the way for the motor car. Additionally he cites the boom in demand for rubber brought about by pneumatic tyres for bicycles as a key cause of the genocide which occurred in Congo in the closing years of the 19th Century.
