Title: The FNRtSR Residential.... Whitby 2013!
Post by: CrinklyLion on 22 April, 2013, 09:37:29 pm
Edited 29/10/12 to be a bit more up to date since it is this weekend

Ride list
I reckon these are the runners and riders:

Me (route leader)
Tiermat (in charge of tea stop)
Phanta (tat secretary)
CrinklyUncle (navigation as far as Malton)
Kim
Nikki
Eeymsmo
andrewc

Not coming:

Basil
Mrcharly
Shyumu
DaleFTW
MAC

If anyone's on the wrong list or can confirm that they're coming, post on the thread. I'll send everyone my mobile number before the ride.

My original post
Yeah, I know, it's blinking ages away.  Humour me, OK  ;)

For those unfamiliar with the event, here's the threads from the last three.
2010 https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=38025.msg720888#msg720888
2011 https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=51743.msg1042830#msg1042830
2012 https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=59136.0

The first one we just rode there overnight, the last two we turned into a weekend of silliness and goth spotting and all round conviviality and good fun.  With added steam train, last year.

I have absolutely no blinking idea if I'll be riding, whether I'll have a full complement of functional limbs and joints, if I'll have chiddlers or not that weekend....  So this isn't really about the ride or the route.

What I am game for is organising the house and stuff at the end, so I have provisionally 'dibbsed' the Whitby 'cottage' for the Friday/Saturday nights of the Goth festival with my mate.  She needs to double check that no family members are planning to use it and will get back to me as soon as she knows if it is available.

Who's interested?

That's 1-3rd of November, which may be worth adding to the thread title...

Aye, I'll be riding, and I'd like to stay over at the cottage again. Maybe I'll do more than sleep on the Saturday this time (though I did get down to the beach, at least - unlike ******* and ************** ;) ).

Same route? It's a fabulously dark stretch of moor, that. At least, it is until you reach the arc lights at Fylingdales.

If you want, and if I'm not riding, I can leave some Den keys with someone so you can all hit the coffee pot before departure without the daleks and the pyjama clad students and the awkward inner space staff refusing hot drinks and stuff :D

Can a FNRtSR virgin express an interest in this fine sounding outing? (I have met Mcshroom if that helps).

Hello!  I'll have at least waved at you from a street corner at midnight with a small child clinging, monkey-like, to my back and a bag full of tasty baked comestibles in one hand.  And if you did the SMRBtY then you'll have met Phanta and CrinklyUncle too.

The "cottage" has 3 double rooms (2 of which are huge) and one twin room plus two attic rooms with a couple of mattresses/camp beds each plus there's assorted other campbeds and inflatables knocking around.  It isn't limitless space, but it hasn't been a problem the last two years :)

Yes, but perhaps the other route into Whitby after Blue Bank (i.e. not the one we did last year)? I think those who'd ridden both preferred that one.

Having been tipped off earlier in the week, I can confirm that MFWHTBAB and I are up for joining in, either riding (perhaps unlikely, unless we really get some training in this summer, instead of working on the house), or going over in the advance party to start the kettle boiling etc.

Although the kettle was much better last year, wasn't it? We'll bring tools anyway, in order to fix whatever does need fixing ;)

Assuming advance party-ness, I'm sure lifts could be given as per last year if necessary for any attendee(s) not riding.

Both are pretty good, I reckon. The main road is simpler, and I do enjoy that long downhill on the Moors Road. But coming along the harbour the other way was very fine, too.

The one we did last year would have been fine without the skog. Twas a bit slippery with the mud and leaves, but I still think preferable to ending up on a major road.

Huzzah!

I have confirmation of the availibility of the 'cottage'.  Same deal as previously, 100 quid a night, bring your own sheets/duvet covers/pillow cases/towels and do the cleaning ready for the next person before you leave.

And it is pretty definite that I can have Cubs that weekend, so won't be riding.  See y'all in Arbutt's :D

(Mind, EC has expressed an interest in hills in the dark  :o  ::-) )

ETA - that's a hundred quid for the whole house, not each, btw as it was pointed out to me on the commute this morning that it was a bit  ambiguous!  I think last year it worked out at around 12 quid a night per person (plus food and chish and fips and stuff like that) but we weren't quite full!

Hoorah!

It'll go on our calendar!

MFWHTBAB and I might even try and make it down to the caff for breakfast this year.  I think we meant to last year, but accidentally stayed up until 3am, and we're too old to be getting up first thing after a late night like that!

I'm not sure if I'm even going to make the ride this year at the moment :(

We have a big multi-choir concert on the Saturday evening in Kendal, so if I do come it may be a case of dumping the car in Whitby/York and heading straight back.

Bump, because cheap rail tickets for 1st November are now available...(though not yet for the Saturday/Sunday).

I'll be getting in at 20.41 (bit early, but it was cheap). I'd like to stay until Sunday, CL, if that's ok.

(Eek, staying for the weekend's going to mean hauling panniers up those hills! :o)

Thanks for the bump, phantasmagoriana.

So there's a night ride over to Whitby departing York at midnight?
Do folks usually ride back to York again afterwards, or would I be getting a train back from Whitby?

*poised over keyboard ready to do something vaguely resembling committing to attending*

Hi nikki.

There's a few options with this one. CrinklyLion has booked an old house in Whitby, so you could make a weekend of it. Otherwise there are a few trains from Whitby, but far more from Scarborough which you can hopefully cadge a lift to.

There's also the option of taking the steam train to Pickering and cycling back to York from there.

Unfortunately I think I'm not going to make this year's ride as I have to be in Kendal by mid afternoon and then practice and perform for a big choral concert that evening which I don't think I can do on zero sleep :(

Thanks mcshroom,

Yes, I'm aiming to do the weekend at the 'cottage'.
It occurred to me that I could drive up to York. Currently pondering bike tetris options with Kim and barakta.

Shame you can't do the ride, but sleep does sound sensible!
Title: Re: The FNRtSR Residential.... Whitby 2013!
Post by: CrinklyLion on 11 August, 2013, 11:24:14 pm
We'll be around all day on the Friday (half term - youpi!) until heading to Whitby, and I'll be around the Thursday too so early arrivals, accommodation and snooze spaces can all be provided in York as can on-street parking.

There's also the option, if travelling on Thursday or reasonably early Friday is possible, of dropping bikes and people in York, going and abandoning a car in Whitby and hopping on the bus back to York which would simplify the end of the weekend for you!
Title: Re: The FNRtSR Residential.... Whitby 2013!

1) Correct
2) People do their own thing, some stay over for the weekend (there are sometimes fireworks over the harbour), some ride back to York and some get the train home (that'll be me then :), the trains from Whitby go (SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWLY) via Middlesboro for connections to points North, South, East and West.)

Hoorah! Just checking the dates, and we can do this AND the West Lancs Halloween Special Trains (which is the weekend before) if we want....

Oh, and Kim will be amused to know that since the earlier reference to antique toasters, I've acquired ANOTHER one...  (And don't know whether that one works either!)

Arch&MFWHTBAB/CU&CA/Kim&Barakta - are all of you guys happy to go with the same bedrooms as last time or would any of you prefer an alternative?

Kim/Barakta/Nikki - any thoughts on my suggestion of, work and the like fitting around it, maybe heading up on Thursday evening and crashing at the Den?  This would allow Nikki to drive over and drop the car in Whitby and hop on a bus back to York whilst still getting a decent night's kip Thursday night and having time for a nap on Friday, and make the return journey on the Sunday a lot simpler for you guys.  If it works out better to do something different and CrinkyHotel space on different nights would help, shout up!

Do we need to provide transport over to Whitby on Friday for anyone but us? (or any stuff, if that helps more, or both or anything?)

This post brought to you from the Department of Concise Questions.

Works for me!

Will drive Kim, barakta, myself, an assortment of cycles and LEDs up to the CrinklyHotel on Thursday and shuttle a proportion of these plus what or whoever else will fit in the car over to the cottage on Friday.

Crinkles, if shuttling involves you and the Cubs, are you able to get back home again afterwards?

Hmm, I'm a bit busy tomorrow afternoon, I get back from MFWHTBABs at lunchtime and have planned a mega jam session - that's the sweet fruity stuff, not music. It might be a bit complicated to time stuff to any deadline.

DaleFTW - it's a pretty easy going bash/bunch!  A few people in the past have done the ride, breakfast in the cafe, and then headed up to the house for cake/coffee/a snooze on the sofa in front of the fire before making their way off again.

Aye - be reet, andrew :)

Historically the room allocation algorithm is pretty much rooms-for-couples-get-allocated and then the rest of us fit in round that.  So, after K&B/A&HFWHTBAB/CU&CA's bookings there's currently a remaining large double room and the two attic rooms (which had either mattresses or camp beds last time I was there) and the living room with a sofa to divvy up, and assorted inflatable/folding etc beds lurking in cupboards that can help with this.

Last two years I've taken along a big ol' box of foodstuffs and the like for general consumption on Friday evening and over the weekend.  Saturday am is breakfast at the fisherman's cafe.  Last year we had a rather pleasant trip on the steam train for tea and cake/lunch at a cafe, a driftwood-for-kindling collecting trip on the beach, then takeaway fish and chips for tea and I persuaded the solid fuel stove to cook sossidges and bacon and porridge for Sunday brekkie.

The deal with the house is that you provide your own towels/duvet covers/pillow cases and do the cleaning before leaving.  I took as many sets of bedding and towels and sleeping bags as I could muster so that people on bikes didn't have to worry about that bit!  Also in the last two years there was an excellent system developed where various adults took my kids to go and be out of the way on the beach returning via the bakers with lunchtime pasties and the like while other adults divvied up the clean up operation.

Kim and I were pondering something involving bat detectors the other week, but I reckon all sensible bats will be in bed by November.

I keep dipping into Instructables for inspiration. I was rather taken by this (http://www.instructables.com/id/Cthulhu-Costume-Latex-Body-Suit/), but I fear a full body latex Cthulhu outfit may not work so well on the night ride :(

I'm in. Assuming trains get me back from London to Nottingham, and I can then cycle to Newark in time to get the train to York I should be there in time for midnight.

If not, it's an impromptu 200km DIY from Nottingham to Whitby, as I've got to meet Sharlotte there as she's got the festival tickets.......

And won't need a bed as should have a hotel to collapse in.

OK,  arriving at York at 22:38 on the Friday, and leaving from Scarborough at 15:52 on Sunday.

Is a sleeping bag permissible as bed linen ?

I hope so. I'm not lugging my duvet around.

There's loads of duvets there.  I'll take as many duvet covers/pillow cases/sleeping bags etc as I can muster, and a stack of towels.  I'm pretty sure that last year we managed an adequate sufficiency such that nobody needed to take them on their bikes!

Anyone else up for tapping on the door at Fylingdales for a cuppa? ;D

Let us know if we're needed to transport anything. I'd offer towels of my own, but they're a bit threadbare for offering to other people!

I'm planning to bring the baraktacycle, for the novelty value of descending Blue Bank on three wheels.  I'm expecting to be differently fast up to that point.

I reckon these are the runners and riders:

Me (route leader)
Tiermat (in charge of tea stop)
Phanta (tat secretary)
CrinklyUncle (navigation as far as Malton)
Kim
Nikki
Eeymsmo
andrewc

Not coming:

Basil
Mrcharly
Shyumu
DaleFTW
MAC

If anyone's on the wrong list or can confirm that they're coming, post on the thread. I'll send everyone my mobile number before the ride.

Meet up in York, a bit before midnight on the Friday 1/11.  Ride bikes to Whitby.  No formal cafe stop, so hedge inspection and al fresco brewing up are the order of the day night.  Breakfast at Arbutts caff :D

Options for getting out of Whitby include riding back, steam trains to Pickering, trains to Middlesborough and beyond, and riding to Scarborough to catch trains from there.

EPIC amounts of displacement activity/effort are going into this bike decoration :)

Same route? It's a fabulously dark stretch of moor, that. At least, it is until you reach the arc lights at Fylingdales.

Yes, but perhaps the other route into Whitby after Blue Bank (i.e. not the one we did last year)? I think those who'd ridden both preferred that one.

Both are pretty good, I reckon. The main road is simpler, and I do enjoy that long downhill on the Moors Road. But coming along the harbour the other way was very fine, too.

We should probably sort out this bit in advance.

The Classic Route (straight along the A-road to the A171) has the advantage of being dead simple, as it's the same road all the way from Pickering until you hit a t-junction, where you turn right and swoop downhill into Whitby. This was the route we took on the first ride in 2010.

The disadvantages are quite a steep, long climb up to the A171/Moors Road from Sleights, and that the Moors Road has a nasty reputation as a busy road.

Or, Route B, which is to turn right in Sleights, and alongside the Esk. It is much quieter, and has a fabulous run-in along the waterfront.

The disadvantages are the sloppy-slimy climb which I reckon is as steep as the A-road, though shorter, and it is much fiddlierier.

Personally, I like both. Does anyone have a strong preference?

Fair enough - I have been meaning to investigate some of the stations on the Moors railway as possible sheltered stops, but I haven't got around to it, so I've no idea about the loo facilities. And it'd be a steep (30%) climb back to the route for possibly no benefit.  There's always Fylingdales, of course..

"Attempt" is right. I do what I can :)

I'm more familiar with the a-road route, and since I'm nominally in charge, that's the one I'd go with.

Phanta, it's probably less steep than the slippery route from last year, and the lovely gentle descent into Whitby along the Moors Road with the sea on the horizon is a great reward. It's only a bit longer cos we get a bit higher before descending.

I'm struggling to remember who else did both. Any other opinions?

Cool.  If anything changes, can you text me? I'm still having laptop issues and not getting round to YACF as often as normal.

We might decide to drop in on the Illuminating York thing at the NRM on the Friday, which we did last year to kill time before picking up Kim and Barakta at the station, in which case we won't be on the way until 7 or later, if that's ok. We should have the address in the SatNav still.

MFWHTBAB should be parked up near the Den earlier in the afternoon, so if anything does need bringing by us, it should be easy to sort a handover.

The bit from York to Malton is just sketched in, Crinkly Uncle can navigate us along that bit, so pay particular attention to the Sleights-Ruswarp-Whitby bit. Those who were there the last two years (and didn't ride the Classic route), does that look about right?

The vague plan is that Nikki is going to drive to Whitby to leave her vehicle there ready for the return to Mordor on Sunday and hop on a bus back.  CA is driving over later in the day - probably early afternoon.  The Cubs and I and Barakta and assorted luggages and gubbins will get transported, possibly split, somehow between those two journeys possibly in a complex fox/chicken/boat type scenario that must ensure that no Baraktas are separated from TEA or indeed too early fron their duvets, that no Cubs get foisted off on people who should not have to be Cub-minding and that nobody finds themselves at the Whitby house without the key to get in and start the kettle boiling!

I haven't had a chance to sort it out properly with everyone because I'm being a bit crap and disorganised, but I'd be surprised if we aren't there by dark.  But there's nae rush if you want to turn up later!

I've noticed another potential fox/chicken/boat failure scenario:  I must be careful not to leave my trousers in York.

CL, what time are the your party planning to be at Whitby on Friday? We're vacillating between staying for the lights at the NRM and kissing heading straight over, it may all depend on how much MFWHTBAB has had to do before heading over to York.

I was hoping to set off sometime after lunch and before it gets dark.

CU and I can highly recommend the lights at the NRM, the George Stephenson statue was most impressive.

I've just realised I forgot to extract my dead spokes from the sack of junk materials that I took to Bristol on Tuesday - sorry about that, Phanta.

I've also just done some bus research, these are my options:

Whitby 11:01  ---> York 13:23
Whitby 13:01  ---> York 15:23
Whitby 17:45  ---> York 20:03 (with a tight change at Malton)

I doubt the first one is really an option, and I also need to factor in navigating back from the railway station at York end.

Working back from this, with an hour and a half travel and and hour and a half for unpacking, grabbing food and finding the bus station, that would be Nikki Taxi departures by 10am or 14:30ish

Back to CL for feasibility checks against Cubs arrival and turnaround times...
Or do we need a different plan?

We'll do whichever one works best for you and you getting some sleep!

I suspect the best plan would be for the Cubs and I to go with you in time for the 13:01 return, and CA to pick up brakata later on.

Just looked at trains.

There's
Whitby 16:00 ---> Middlesbrough 17:30
Middlesbrough 17:50 ---> York 18:47

For as near as damn it the same amount of time and money.

How about a 12ish departure from the Den, lunch in Whitby, bit of faff, and then I head for the train station at a leisurely pace. Bus option feels like it would be a whole day against the clock.

From experience I would go with the train, as the Whitby train pulls into the same platform that the York bound train leaves from.

Thanks for the kind offer, mrcharly. I think I'll probably walk back from the station - I suspect getting my bike to yours in the first place will cancel out any convenience gained later and there's already a *lot* of logistics between here and Whitby!

We'll get the heating on and the radiators warm to dry your kit out...

I have a Rather Large Pile of shopping bags filled with assorted foodstuffs, a fridge full of Moar FoodStuffs (including lots of bacon and sossidges) and a some veggie sossidges in the freezer.  And quite a lot of fuzzy pop, some Hobgoblin (seemed appropriate), and a variety of wines in assorted hues.  Plus lots of KFOJ and 4 pints of lacto-free semi-skimmed.  And 80 tetley teabags, a couple of packets of ground coffee, and a couple of different sorts of (now-famous) Lesbian Tea.

Approximate plan for the advance party is pizza, jacket spuds (beans/tuna/cheese/cottage cheese) and a load of salad-y and nibbly stuff.

There should be an adequate sufficiency of things to eat for grazing on Saturday.  Steam train trip for anyone that fancies it?  Chish and Fips takeaway for tea, then the EldestCub has volunteered to make apple crumble and (tinned) custard for afters.

Fry up Sunday morning.

Cool, we'll play it by ear. I think we'll see how we feel moment by moment. I don't finish work until 4 anyway. It would be nice to do the NRM, but this is a long awaited weekend off for us and it would be nice to get the travelling over with sooner and be in good relaxing company for the whole evening! Also last year I seem to remember we accidentally stayed up until 2am, and weren't fit to join the cafe breakfast group, which we'd like to do!

Apologies in advance for interminable talk about emulsion paint and laminate flooring. We're rather engrossed in decorating the marital bedroom at the moment!

Steam trains would be cool on Saturday.

MFWHTBAB has packed the bike rack and lighting board in case of ferrying anyone to Scab to catch a train.

If all goes according to plan tomorrow I should be at York station for 23:10 ish. Though that relies on my course finishing early, midland mainline getting me home on time, packing and cycling to Newark before 21:30 and the train to York being on time

If anyone is stuck for a lift on Saturday then I'll have my car as well once in whitby (Charlotte is driving up, so making this all work is the only way I can catch up and enjoy the festival)

Just had a chat with a lad dressed as a 6' 5" demon, most of the height being achieved by way of hooves, which his dad helped him make. I can't help thinking his dad died a little inside with every toenail.

He wasn't wearing the hooves when he left, as his friends were sick of holding him up in them.

Everyone appeared at the last minute having been in some sort of pub. Nikki conclusively won the bling contest, though I'm still not sure if it qualified as tat.

Setting off on a circular route around York, we eventually achieved escape velocity and were flung off into the foggy lanes.  Progress was decent enough for an hour or so,  but as the fog became denser my legs became slower and slower,  making full use of the trike's very low gears on what barely qualified as hills. A few miles from Malton, I realised it really wasn't working, and CrinklyUncle called for reinforcements. We plodded on, pausing only to assist the plod with their enquiries (specifically "Is it for charity?"), and somewhere on the road to Pickering a car with a distinctive full set of headlights spotted us. It was none other than Arch and her FWHTBAB.  Quickly folding the trike and bunging it in the back, I collapsed into the lovely warm car.

About 3 nanoseconds after we set off, the fog lifted. We waved "cyclewankers" to those who had gone ahead to brew up in Pickering, and continued across the moors to Whitby. Notable observations included the continued absence of fog; the famous Christmas tree (which has been re-tinseled) and austerity lighting of the giant toaster at Fylingdales.

I  didn't get the trike out at the top of Blue Bank, though conditions were pretty good for it.   We ran over a little baby fog on the descent into Whitby, and soon arrived at the house where I occupied myself with a nice hot bath while the others molished a fishy passive aggressive note for the person who had parked like a fud outside.

I hope the others are enjoying the rest of the ride at a somewhat better pace...

Me, Trumps, and my clunk have made it up the stairs; laundry is churning (will then have to both dry and not forget my trousers for Bristol next week; and I have just fortified myself with a CrinklyHobNob before attacking the lesson-planning.

Thanks all, that was a rather fantastic weekend.  :-*

The ride started, as is now traditional, in the York Tap. Well, it did for most of us - Kim and Nikki were in the now non-standard meeting location, the station lobby. Where else would we be except the pub?! I had wandered around a couple of times to check that no one was waiting in the lobby as the clock ticked around to the witching hour, but we still set off on time, just about, and a slightly unplanned tour of York's inner bypass ensued. I think I startled CrinklyUncle when I told him he was in charge of navigation to Malton, which probably helps to explain the confusion there, and the fact that everybody's GPS was wrong for the first quarter of the ride. The route I'd planned involved a trip to Stamford Bridge, but CU concocted a fine, laney route which threw off my sense of direction at first, so apologies for any mixed messages there. It gave us a lovely quiet route and a chance to chat, and also to avoid the A(1)666 which leads to the throbbing metropolis of Stamford Bridge and the satanic rites that were going on in the centre. Probably.

We rode into thick fog which clung to the Derwent valley and to everything else. That was the nature of the first half of the ride - the fog. It hung in the still air and trailed from the branches of trees, and our fabulous lights projected each other's shapes onto the grey screen ahead. We were chasing our own shadows into the gloom. I could see no farther than five yards ahead, and the only point of reference was the white line down the centre of the road. This led to a further sense of dislocation, and a discussion between Phanta and I about where we were, as I wasn't sure whether we were just above Malton, lacking the usual surly glow of streetlights on the horizon, but Phanta has a remarkable memory for chevron signs, and she reassured me that we were on the descent into Malton. I took her at her word and decided not to bother braking on the long, straight descent, using the white centre line as a guide. The fog smothered all sound except for the hooting of owls, the squeaking of bats and the chatter of cyclists.

But it didn't quite cover the panting of Kim, who was finding it hard slog on this, the easy part of the ride. CU called ahead to Goth Base Camp, and after a slightly confusing exchange (no doubt someone from Base Camp will provide the details later) a plan was settled upon, which was by far the best of the available options, which had varied from finding a handy yacfer near Malton or riding back to York (which would have nullified the whole foxes/chickens/farmers/boats planning), to depositing Kim in a handy bus shelter with a sleeping bag to wait until morning. We waved to MFWHTBAB and Arch who had been woken up and had driven out from Whitby to perform the retrieval, which went beyond the call of duty and was much appreciated by all. The three of us pointed them back down the road to where Kim would be.

Not that we'd cruelly ditched her, but Phanta, eeymsmo and I had formed an impromptu forward group, so we decided to nip ahead to Pickering, scout out locations and toast marshmallows prepare for the others' arrival. The petrol stove was a dismal failure at toasting marshmallows, particularly the gobstopping variety Phanta had brought.

I donned my final layer for the entry into the hills, and I was glad I had, as the climb away from Pickering also drew us above the fog and into the stars. Thousands, millions of them were speckled across the sky in startling clarity, and with the loss of the cloud cover the temperature plummeted. Of course, we didn't plummet, and I was glad of the opportunity to warm up on the climb, which I wouldn't have needed to do except that we were climbing above the warm blanket of fog, which we were only leaving as we were climbing...

It was so late that it was getting early, and these random thoughts were circling my tired brain on the long climb to Hole of Horcum, which once again we didn't see. The gritting wagon passed us as he treated the road, and circled back to stop at the lay by, where I blamed him for ruining our view of the stars, but when he left it was obvious that there was another culprit, as the unruly sun was rising, and light was touching the eastern sky.

definitely andrewc

We didn't wait around long enough to see the Hole of Horcum in daylight, and I for one was glad that the gritter had been past and treated the twisty descent of Saltergate Bank down to Eller Beck Bridge.

We paused to regroup on the hills a couple of times, and looking back to the cool kids at the back of the autobus showed the size of the landscape, with white lights at the bottom of the valley braving the darkness, while the tail lights of the occasional car at the top of Saltergate Bank seemed to be touching the sky. The sun also did its work to uncloak the Moors. The sight of the road swooping down from Widow's Howe to Brocks Beck and up the other side, with the North Sea in your right eye, is enough to stir the soul of any cyclist and make you want to bite the horizon.

And the daylight gave us a spectacular view from the top of Blue Bank across to Whitby, the harbour, the abbey and the sea. Maybe we can always time the ride for that, though that would probably require extensive lobbying to Ryedale Council and Costa to open a 24-hour facility in Pickering

The descent of Blue Bank in daylight was also less fraught than during the hours of darkness, though I was cautious enough that my maximum speed was a mere 38.8 mph. We had a small discussion about possible routes into Whitby, but stuck with route B, which is either alongside or crossing the Esk. The river was rather high, which made for some grand sights and sounds, and was also a reminder of how much rain we hadn't had on the ride, though I'd hardly call it dry. The run of decent weather (for the season) on this ride continues.

A last hoik up the side of the Esk Valley and under the Whitby-Scarborough railway line brought us into the outskirts of Whitby, leaving only a drop to the harbour and a run past the trawlers and lobster pots to the Swing Bridge and our destination, Arbutt's Cafe, where all the trawlermen hang out. As eeysmso pointed out, they always know a good fry-up, so they're the lads to follow, though this policy could be taken to extremes on a bike.

Here endeth the night ride.

The rest of the weekend was a mix of eating, drinking, goth-spotting, more marshmallows, fire, wandering, cat-imitation (I was dozing for that part, and may have missed something fundamental), laughter-induced injuries and yet more eating. Photos to follow.

Thanks again to everyone, especially CL for the organisation, house and food, Arch and mfwhtbab for being the umpteenth emergency service, everyone at the house for the welcome, and everyone on the ride for their good humour. And congratulations to everyone for their tat - I can't remember who suggested setting fire to CU's broomstick for the descent of Blue Bank, but it's something to bear in mind for next year. Nikki's decoration is exempted from the tat category, and has set the standard for next year. Eeysmso is also exempted as he is a real live Goth - hey everyone, we got a proper Goth on the ride! Who knows how many we'll have next year.

Deano, has your Roberts got a name yet?  If not, could I christen it the Panzerwagen?

Pfft. It already has a name, it's written on the frame. It is a big thing, though, isn't it?

Dr B, have you ever done this ride? I don't remember you making it farther than Stamford Bridge.

and after a slightly confusing exchange (no doubt someone from Base Camp will provide the details later)

Slightly confusing?

Take one CrinklyUncle who has been at work all day then riding his bike all night, and get him to phone a CrinklyLion who is sleeping the codeine-induced sleep of the tennis-elbowed-who-have-barakta-nearby-with-good-painkillers.  Add in a need to understand Geography (there's a reason I pedal and follow, y'know) and my lack of a car/driving license/any ability to drive meaning that I had to get one of the drivers in the house to wake up in order to turn into International Rescue... quite discombobulated, I was.

And we'd been _really_ sensible this year and not stayed up nattering til 2am so that we'd be chipper and cheerful when we met you at the cafe and everything!

I initially tried Arch and HerFWMHTBAB's door as I know that HerFWMHTBAB is a light sleeper and a bit of a night owl, but got no answer.  Woke up CrinklyAuntie who (I can confidently say, as her big sister) has _never_ been very good at being unexpectedly woken up and has been known to have entire conversations with her eyes open but punctuated by little snores light ladylike night breathing moments.  A combination of her not actually being awake and me being in a complete codeine haze and CU being on the other end of a phone made it an interesting planning meeting.  But she got up and dressed and booted and suited and went to get the car out.  Which is when we discovered this...

There was absolutely no way we could get the car out :(

Back into the house, and CA rang CU to explain.  We tried to work out if she could go and get Nikki's car from the car park, since we had the keys, but the lack of insurance made that a non-starter.  I tried knocking on the other door again, and actually ended up opening it and sticking my head round!  Fortunately Arch and HerFWHTBAB woke up, understood what was going on far better than I had on the first run though, and were good to go in a matter of minutes.  CA had some chocolate while I composed a little note (which I left on the table to deliberate whether or not to affix it to the offending vehicle) then attempted to go back to bed and I waited for International Rescue and the rescuee to return.  They thought my little missive was remarkably mild under the circumstances, and a little ingenuity in the weather-proofing turned it into possible the most middle class passive aggressive note ever, as we recycled the packaging from the smoked salmon that had been eaten for supper.  This had the added bonus of making it smell of fish.

Massive hurrah indeed for Arch and HerFWMHTBAB - but also for CA whose honorary International Rescue Membership can be in no doubt, since it was only due to an inconsiderate driver who parked like a fud that my waking her up ended up being for nowt :(

Apart from all of that, I was quite confused by the idea of Crinkly Auntie coming to collect Kim, as I didn't know how the trike was going to fit in her car. I was quite relieved when I saw MFWHTBAB's larger car approaching.

But it's a folding trike, and that's just awesome.

I was a bit crap with phones - I had noticed that the battery on my iPhone was performing poorly, but I completely forgot to swap the sim into my basic but reliable phone, hence comms were a bit crap.

So it fell to CU to make the call, and he managed to summarise the issue quite concisely with his opening line:

"We have a problem with Kim."

Makes it easier to fit in most smaller cars than a regular bicycle.  Further smallification can be achieved if you get a spanner out to collapse the boom and remove the front wheels (there's a kit of additional QRs for this as an optional extra, but barakta can't work QRs so we didn't bother).

As a helpful side-effect, the independently adjustable handlebars mean it can be adjusted to fit barakta's unequal-length arms without any special modifications.

Just to be clear, Kim, I was just amused by the expression, as it wasn't overly disruptive to the ride that you had to pack (I had a conversation with eesypeesy later on about it being deliberately short to allow flexibility for stuff and cold and so on - last year I had to manufacture stops so that we didn't arrive in Whitby before anything was open). Setting off is sometimes the best way, as the atmosphere and the company and the push to finish can make all the crap vanish. Then, packing was the right choice.

If my phone had been working, by the way, my opening line would have been "Whitby, we have a problem."

It was still rather irresponsible of me to try to Rule 5 my way through known lurgy like that though.  At the very least I should have gone and done a quick 40k on Thursday to see how I felt.

Ah well, three cheers to MFWHTBAB for the rescue, and to the ride being otherwise incident-free (other than that whole police thing).

And yes, I was amused by the expression.  At least with the benefit of hindsight.

Well that was a fun filled weekend !

Skilfully avoiding an after hours job by kicking it upstairs to management & running out of the door, I demolished a bowl of lasagne & got the train to York.

Arriving at the station I could only see normal looking people in the front of the York Tap, and it wasn't until I went through to the back that I found Deano.

Bike secured to rails at the back I grabbed a pint of something dark & alcoholic and we waited until Phanta & eeymso turned up.    Beers were finished & we went in
search of Kim & Nikki who were in the station entrance hall.

Nikki instantly won the "Halloween Lights" contest with her colour changing ghostie/Pacman ,

my Skullies & Bat shaped fairy lights were dazzled into insignificance

I'd programmed Deano's route into my GPS so was confused (it doesn't take much) when CrinklyUncle led us off in a totally different direction.

A fine twisty, turny, lane ride foliowed on deserted roads ,   the fog was dense & everything was coated with moisture.  The peloton became a string of red lights on a thread of mist shrouded tarmac….

About 6 miles before Malton it became apparent that Kim's slow progress wasn't due to the natural slugishness of the trike, she was lurgified & knackered.

Phone calls were made, people were roused from slumber and a rescue ship dispatched from Whitby.

We proceeded at slower speed to Malton, there was a slightly surreal encounter with police, who wanted to know what we were doing, and who owned the bike with the flashy blue thing on it (Nikki)

Just before Pickering a car flashed it's lights at us & Arch and Alfred bundled Kim into a nice, warm car and swept her away, while the rest of us looked on enviously.

In true hard riding style a bus shelter in Pickering was commandeered for a rest stop, tea was brewed,  Phanta melted & scorched marshmallows, I looked in vain for an open loo..

We began the serious climbing part of the ride    up onto the moors and the fog cleared to reveal a wonderful night sky.

Nikki & I were the slowest of the remaining riders and we wound our way past the arc lights at Fylingdales as the sky grew lighter.

A final regrouping and  we girded our loins, screwed our courage to the sticking point and hurtled down Blue Bank, in my case recording a slightly silly 42mph….

There were some final, cruel climbs on the road in to Whitby (was that ice on the road or oil ?) but we arrived at approx 7:30 for a large, greasy fry up in Arbuts, where the advance party were there to greet us.

After stuffing our faces we repaired to the "cottage" (if this was in London it would be worth the GDP of a small nation) and collapsed in the living room.   Phanta continued to indulge her marshmallow fetish..

I realised I might be a bit fragrant from my exertions when CrinklyLion chucked a towel at me and showed me to the bathroom…..

After bathing I crashed on a mattress for a while then descended to the living room to indulge in a spot of conversation (not my strong point) and cub wrestling
(at which I'm rather better)

The weather cleared and we went for an afternoon stroll, a group of odd people wearing strange clothing cutting our way through hordes of strange people wearing odd clothing…..

Up at the Abbey it was clear & windy, there appeared to be several Goth weddings in progress, with a host of fantastically costumed people posing for photos.

Some of our crew posed for photos as well.

We took a stroll though the weathered gravestones and then found a cafe.

Eventually a huge order of fish & chips was collected & eaten, a few beers were drunk and we headed off to bed.

Deano & I were sharing a garret, and apparently had some kind of snoring contest……

The next day dawned bright & sunny, though rather windy.

A heyuuuuge cooked breakfast was prepared by the very lovely & wonderful CrinklyLion , and eaten with great enthusiasm.

Phanta outdid Heston Blumenthal with her experimental cooking and devised a new signature dish, Marshmallow Toasties !  No wonder she moved to Glasgow…..

Further creative uses for Marshmallows were found.

After assisting with the cleanup I left a bit before 1 and took the 21 mile Cinder Track (http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/recreation/article/wtr-recreation-yorks-Whitby-Scarborough-Cycle-Track-0)  to Scarborough.   This was a really fun ride, though tougher  than I was expecting. There was quite a bit of slow up, and an equal amount of fast down, some of which with the low sun in my eyes I should have taken _much_ more slowly, but I was in a hurry….
Surface varied from good hardpack, to a few inches of mud to bits where your wheels were forced into channels, either side of a grass strip.  OK on 1.5" tyres.

I was booked on the 15:52 train and caught it with a minute to spare….

Well, another superb weekend, huge thanks to the Crinkly party for advance planning and logistics!

We decided against the Illuminated locos at the NRM, in favour of getting on our way and joining the party. The drive over was uneventful after the customary bottleneck where the A64 goes single lane just outside York. We arrived in good time to unload MFWHTBAB's unfeasible amount of tools, which he'd brought along due to coming straight over to York from a job in the morning. Them, and Tiddles the Brompton, who hadn't been ridden back from my work to the flat as usual due to copping out and paying for an hour in my local carpark instead of shuttling to and fro.

Once unloaded, we dropped the car off in the conveniently local FREE carpark at the top of the hill and walked back to imbibe tea while the jacket potatoes and pizzas cooked. Oh, and MFWHTBAB fixed all the lights that weren't working, due to loose switches and innappropriate fittings.

A studendous supper was produced from the fridge. When CL revealed the smoked salmon, I thought I'd lost MFWHTBAB's affections for good!

Determined not to repeat our mistake of last year - staying up enjoying conversation and suddenly realising it was 2am - we toddled off to bed and lights out just before midnight...

CL woke us with a terribly apologetic "Kim's in trouble" at, well, whenever it was. Mentally humming the Thunderbirds theme we managed to dress in the correct clothes, all the right way round, and set the SatNav for "back the way we came". MFWHTBAB had the foresight to fit the roof bars before we left, to avoid faffing later.

It was a glorious night ont' moors. So many stars. My god, it's full of stars.

Until Pickering, where it became full of fog. Fortunately it wasn't too far further before we spied oncoming Lasers of Deth, which were revealed, after mutual rapid three point turns, to be the advance party. Reassured that we were on the right road we three-pointed once more, and soon spotted more Lasers of Deth, one of them lower down, and surmounted by a characteristically bobbing-from-side-to-side headtorch. Miraculously, we met at the entrance to a long layby, which gave us plenty of space to operate Thunderbird Skoda. "Just take all the loose bits off" I said, and Kim did, followed by the seat, which confused me until she then flipped the back end over and we both remembered that the trike folds to go in the boot...

After we passeed through Pickering again, Kim said "Where's the fog gone!?!"

Dropping her off, we replaced the car in the convenient FREE carpark, walked back to the house, enjoyed CL's note, and constructed a weatherproof holder for it, before slipping it under the wiper. We also came up with a few entertaining things we could have done, involving gaffer tape (wrapping it round the car), or a mythical roll of yellow sticky tape (reinforcing the double yellows in an up-and-over fashion) or a packet of chips (to be left on the roof and wait for the seagulls to wake up). Tiddles the Brompton was now sharing his room with the Trice, and we think his mind might have been boggling at its wheel alignment.

After that, we got as much as an hour's sleep - well, actually I think I got 10 minutes eventually, and MFWHTBAB rested his eyes, but anyway - before it was time to be up-and-at-em for breakfast. Updates from the peleton meant we did have time to imbibe some caffeine before setting out for a very good fry up in the company of some proper gnarly trawlermen. No half dead Goths this year though.

The rest of the morning passed in horizontality for MFWHTBAB (and Kim, but not together!), and in near-horizontality-but-with-tea-and-marshmallows-and-Goth-spotting for me and most of the rest of the party. It was decided that mooching round Whitby would be a suitable occupation for the afternoon. MFWHTBAB and I set off to attempt the 199 steps, which was easier than we remembered, and at the top we waved vigorously to the house. We think we were spotted.

After a tea and very good cake at the cafe, we retraced the 199 steps and did a bit of mooching in Goth shops. We didn't buy any Goths though.

After a cracking episode of thunder and lightning, the fish and chip party went out and foraged, while MFWHTBAB fixed the wooden settle in the kitchen so that it didn't rock, using a G-cramp and a piece of driftwood. We were rewarded with a window seat, although most restaurant window seats come with tables...  Still, it meant we could legitimately ask for anything we wanted to be passed over, since we were coralled in by Cubs.

After dinner, and baths, I accepted a 'oh, just a small one, go on then' Highland Park from AndrewC. My reflexes were so dulled that I failed to say "Whoa!" in time, so I had to share it with MFWHTBAB. After that, sleep didn't so much beckon as beat me round the head.

Sunday brought another sumptuous breakfast, to which we all did justice, and then the Beach Party took themselves off out so that the Tidying Party could work uninterrupted. We majored in "digging canals up the beach", an occupation which is at least more exciting when the tide is coming in than when it's going out. We marooned various members of the party on islands of sand and rock before the cold and time and tide sent us back up to the seafront, where the Cubs were allowed candyfloss, and I bought MFWHTBAB a celebratory tub of whelks.

Then it was time to pack up, find I'd lost the scarf that was from the same set as the hat I lost two years ago (the gloves are worried now), and get everything into the correct respective cars. Tiddles the Brompton still unridden.

The drive back was fine, bar the usual bottleneck where the A64 goes single lane after Huttons Ambo. I'd left my work keys at work, so couldn't retrieve my bike. Tiddles the Brompton spent another night in the car. Unridden again. We walked home, laden with leftover groceries, and enjoyed dinner in bed (to keep warm!) of corn on the cob and smoked salmon on toast.

Today, although not part of the weekend, was notable for us actually getting our act together and Setting A Date at the register office, and then spending the afternoon pressing apples for the matrimonial cider. MFWHTBAB went home at 6ish. Tiddles still unridden....

CL had a rather good idea, to which we added a clause. Look out for details of the "FNRtSR Whitby Summer Weekend Ride incorporating Arch and MFWHTBAB's sort of honeymoon weekend" sometime after early June.

Got through my day of workshopping and have managed to stay awake at my lodgings for long enough to cane their wi-fi and upload lots of photos. You can get to the full set via this link: http://flickr.com/gp/nikki_pugh/AoUX9x/

Lovely to look through all the stuff we got up to - that was one seriously good weekend!
Thanks again, all.

My frights started early on Friday when I awoke to find this dragon staring at me:

One of the hazards of sleeping in a Cub's bed, I suppose...

Later that day, as I meandered my way back to York to rejoin the farmer fox chicken Kim, the train carriage I was in got decorated up around me. Top marks to the train operators for fab staff who were also friendly and helpful when we hit a few delays. Excellent atmosphere for that leg of the journey

What was later to be christened 'Trumps the Ghost' got its maiden voyage out over the North Yorks Moors:

Yet to have met Arch and HerFWHTBAB face-to-face until their rescue mission, first impressions were formed as I was instructed to turn my bike around and much squeals were to be heard :)

It does look good in the dark, doesn't it  ;D  :smug:
I'm well chuffed with how it turned out!

The ride over the moors was gawjus in the early throes of dawn and, before that, with a clear-as-anything sky full of stars and some gangs of owls.

I tried for a panorama shot as we reconvened before Blue Bank, but it really doesn't do it justice

Once at the cottage, I was seriously impressed with Phanta's sustained enthusiasm for a) marshmallows and b) Goth-spotting:

Turns out Deano's pretty darn good at rustling up a steampunk goth likeness in Play-Doh, too!

The weather on Saturday was somewhat changeable, with sunshine, showers, thunderstorms and everything in between:

We seized an opportunity to climb up the abbey, though, and were rewarded with some lovely late afternoon sunshine.

CrinklyUncle and SmallestCub had a bit of a Titanic moment:

And the rest of us enjoyed pootling with our cameras. This photo makes me giggle :)

Later that night, ghostly apparitions were to be seen in the streets of Whitby.

The following morning, a few sausages were spotted:

The gap between sausage sorting and sausage nomming was big enough for EldestCub to show me the beach and whale bits. This involved braving some knee-high sandstorms (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikki_pugh/10676197406/in/set-72157637315460813) and a certain amount of rock-climbing.

All good for building up an appetite, and the breakfast catering was certainly up to the job!

A toast course was achieved though the dedication of Phanta and CrinklyAuntie. Respect.

I later had the pleasure of returning to the sands as part of Team Beach. It's a tough job, but...

Here's MFWHTBAB sizing up a rockface for what I can only assume will be a small carving project:

Meanwhile kites and spades had been deployed over at the water's edge:

When SmallestCub's island got submerged, we retreated onto a convenient rock and Arch and HerFWHTBAB set about digging with a gusto that was great to watch  :)

SmallestCub had an escape plan, but he sure wasn't going to tell us what it was.

EldestCub made it to safety, but history does not record what happened to CrinklyUncle.

And congratulations once again to MFWHTBAB and Arch - if you're looking for a themed weekend, the Whitby Regatta is in early August, though I imagine that attracts a very different crowd.

It was indeed a fine weekend of cycling and cottaging. Hugh thanks to Crinklylion for arranging the house once again, and for organising things like food and bedding (I'd have had to leave the marshmallows behind if I'd had to bring a sleeping bag!). And of course the rescue party in the house.

Thanks to everyone else on the ride, too - I was pleased to see a good array of tat on display, though Trumps the Ghost can hardly be called tat. But next year there must be costumes! Start preparing now...

It was a wonderful weekend, as usual.

Friday began with a lot of faffing about due to double booking myself.  I had agreed to spend the day at a client's house helping with their inbound house move.  It was a move from the Isle of Arran to Manchester and with much potential for running modifications to fit stuff into the house.
It rained heavily as I did what I could to assist the moving process, including cutting holes in the brand new kitchen units to plumb the washing machine and making a temporary washer with some leather scrap.  By 2pm I managed to escape and get on the road but I have list of things to do ASAP now.

The drive out, via a soaking at McD's in Chorlton as I tried to get some late lunch in the rain, was miserable due to the rain getting heavier.  Then on the M60 there were signs saying that the M62 was closed between J22 and J24. :-[
I decided to stay on the M62 and just follow any diversions.  The 'not moving' bit took longer then the 'moving bit' up to that point, with the possible alternatives at J20 and J21 being heavy with traffic.  Having sat at J22 for near 20 mins with the engine off something then happened.  All the traffic shot off like the traps were opened.  There was no indication of why the motorway was closed.  ???

I eventually arrived in York shattered and not really in the best mood for making decisions so I just followed Arch's lead.

The drive over to Whitby was fine and the feast CL laid out for dinner was much appreciated, especially the smoked salmon!  The Friday night feast has to be the best part of the Whitby night ride.  ;)

The fire was lit using cardboard, drift wood and a little bit of greasy pasty paper bag before the coals were placed carefully around the flames to warm them. I managed to stab myself in the hand with my pen knife as I was still holding it when was tearing cardboard.  :-\

CL pointed out that some of the lights were not working on the stairs and I had a look at them.  There were loose connections in most of the stair light switches and one of the lamp holders was lacking in a neutral connection.  The non heat resistant flex was brittle and the end the electrical connections were taking all the weight of the lamp and the shade.  That was repaired as best as could be done without recourse to buying new parts while balanced on a tall stool with Arch pointing a torch.

The bath water that night was a little rich in ferrous oxide but that cleared up over the weekend.  I wasn't planing on doing plumbing this year.

The rescue run was quite exciting and has been described already.  CL failed to wake me the first time round as I had only just fallen asleep and was hearing all sorts of noises and voices as I drifted into dream mode while working out how to make skirting boards curve around a 4" radius for 180 degrees.  I was just waking again when CL popped her head around the door and said Kim was in trouble.

Not knowing the nature of the trouble I reacted as if for the worse and leapt into my clothes as Arch went to the bathroom.  We rushed down to the kitchen to find that Kim was still cycling but need not to be.  However, by then my BP was up and I had an adrenalin rush.
I did what I could to drive calmly without being too relaxed, to keep my BP down and was grateful for being stuck behind another car working its way through the darkness and then the fog.

Having spotted cyclists in the gloom I did a quick turn in the road using forward and reverse gears only to find that Kim wasn't with them.  Another turn in the road and a mile further along presented a second group of cyclists, whereupon Kim was duly loaded and rescued.

Back at base camp there was an opportunity for about 50 minutes of closed eyes before a trek down to the cafe for a much needed breakfast.
Another period of closed eyes followed while listening to feet on stairs and bathroom usage before lunch and and a chance to investigate the other side of Whitby with Arch.

We climbed the 199 steps up to the church but didn't think much of the mobility accessible ramp alongside it.  It looked a little steep and bumpy.

On the way back to base camp we did some goth shop browsing.  I found the shop where I was once tried on a big leather goth overcoat and said I would return with money £400, for it.  That was back in 1996 I think, the coat wasn't there any more.  Arch did get a photo of me trying on a hat.  Maybe she will post it some time.

The ghost in the window was a nice surprise.

Sunday on the beach was bracing, but great fun trying to maroon people by making moats wider as the tide came in.  I am still not sure whelks are a good substitute for ice cream though, even with a sprinkling of cockles!

Anyway, I am finally home this evening after a day sorting out our wedding date and squishing apples to make wedding cider.

Tired now. Bed and then work in the morning.  Must remember to book an appointment with my local registry office to arrange my side of the wedding formalities.

Thank you CL for making it all a wonderfully organised, fun and foodie holiday.  And thank you to everyone else for the great company and entertainment.
It was lovely finally meeting Nikki, too, and talking 'stuff'.

Looking forward to next year's Whitby dates. :)

Here's a little video of the swing bridge in action (I don't seem to be able to embed it here):

I looked at that for ages trying to work out what was funny and then,  ;D

Dammit, my old laptop seems to be having trouble seeing my phone, so no photos of mine just yet... suffice to say, MFWHTBAB looked very fine in the hat!

I would have posted the whole sequence, but thought I'd probably already exceeded my photos-of-small-cute-blond-boy quota for the day :)

OK, I'm biased...

....but he's actually quite cute, that small person, isn't he?

Today we had parents evening.  I got to see the latest bit of writing in his book - what I did in my holidays.  A masterpiece of the genre.  I'll try to get a copy :D

Neither are the keenest of authors... will see what they can come up with :D

I do think that the pic that EldestCub took on Sunday morning and which Nikki just very kindly emailed me deserves a wider audience tho.

That's a great pic. I like the way he's framed the abbey in the whalebones!

Finally, a couple of pics from me. I chose one of the sky at the abbey and one of the rainbow, but looking at MFWHTBAB's post again, they are they same as his!

So, the hat:

And on Sunday, comparing seaside treats:

I see SmallestCub looks like he's already eaten his candyfloss and is on a sugar rush...

NT went to the railway last night and got some welding goggles that were being thrown out. By next year he might have a whole steampunk outfit of his own...

That's MFWHTBAB's costume for next year sorted, then! Very steampunk.

On the subject of costumes, I've found the perfect cycling boots: https://www.dzrshoes.com/zurich (shame they're (a) sold out, and (b) didn't come in my size anyway. Oh well. ::-))

I need new glasses so I was thinking about taking the goggles to the optician to see if they could fit photochromic lenses to them.

I am also thinking about making the hat, I have some black leather scraps.  It will go with the black leather jacket and trousers I have too.  They will need adapting a bit with some buckles and bronze fittings.

Looking back at the words and pictures again now I'm back home properly. Good stuff. *goes misty-eyed*.

andrewc: I knobbled one of your photos of Trumps in the fog for a blog post - hope that's okay. (And well done for getting a nice photo of me smiling, btw. There aren't many of those about!)

MFWHTBAB: I'd be so very severely disappointed if you did anything so commonplace as buy a steampunk hat from a shop. Looking forward to seeing what you make!

Phanta: permission granted to buy some of those boots if they ever crop up on ebay!

I'd never buy one, unless it was a charity shop bargain too good to be missed.  Also I am too broke to buy stuff. :-[

I noticed my video on your blog!

Sorry to miss you lot - I was in Whitby, but for other reasons involving being smashed on snakebike and black [1]. If I'd spotted this was on I'd have come and said hello.

[1] this is not actually true, I haven't had a snakey and black for years...

Mis-read that as wedding goggles...
