SPOTY 2012

After this great victory, is there any doubt about who the Sports Personality of the Year 2012 will be?

Well, yes, that's a possibility, but I have to say that, after the Tour de France, I thought Bradley Wiggins would be a shoo-in.

With Olympic success, that's no longer certain, and I could see anyone winning it from:

Weir
Storey
Simmonds
Ennis
Gymnast chaps
Ainslie
Wiggins
Hoy
Murray
etc etc.

Probably the strongest field ever.

I'd cancel the individual award this year and just have a general "team GB" award to everyone who won something or took part.

Singling someone out seems rather petty in light of what's happened this summer.

Total lack of personality has never prevented anyone winning Sports Personality of the Year so Murray could win it.

I hope John Terry does win it though..just to see it all kick off in the auditorium.

I always thought that there should also be a "Sports Arse of the Year" as one of the awards.  Although perhaps it would get a little repetitive, as the recipients would generaly always be a footballer, usually from the Engerlund squad, usually from a certain London team.

This year there could be a chance for cricket, with KP showing good form.

KP & Terry would be fighting that one out.

I forgot Farah from my list (and probably loads more excellent candidates)

For the first time since I've been checking the odds since Le Tour, Wiggins is no longer the odds-on favourite, though he's still top. Murray currently second favourite. I was away for most of the Olympics so haven't seen many of the performances from there - haven't had time to look at much of the BBC's coverage online since getting back from France.

Pre-Olympics I'm sure I recall hearing a radio news story that some bookies were already paying out on Wiggo.

If it really does go on votes rather than being the fix I always assumed it was, then I reckon Wiggo is still favourite. A lot of votes will be split across the Olympians and any half decent armchair sportsman will be aware of the significance of Wiggo's Tour win.

If Murray had won Wimbledon rather than the US, he would probably be favourite...

Indeed. The Olympian vote will split, with a decent wedge going to Wiggo. Then all the cyclists will pile in on top of that.

Or Terry will get it.

I'd like to see it go to one of the paralympians as they seem to have personality as well as normality and success

I believe Wiggins has a wee bit of personality. ;)

But, yes, a number of them have shown themselves to be well-rounded personalities.  I think of Farah, Simmonds and Ennis in particular, but there are loads more.

Well, there's always been a team award.  But there will certainly be an individual one, too.

I hope that, if Weir wins it, they have a ramp onto the stage this time.

Scotland will vote for Murray.

Not many of them have phones to vote though. And the ones who do will probably be too drunk to operate them....
