Some may blossom in cambridgeshire

...while those in Herts rarely thrive.

A brood of 10 mallard duckings. That's a fantastic achievement: the incubation period is about 4 weeks so the mother was sitting on eggs during the harshest of weather.
Apparently there were 12 originally, 8 yesterday, 3 today. Presumably they were the three that managed to hide under the mother's wings during yesterday's vicious rain & sleet. There's a bitter NWerly today so I don't suppose those three will make it to tomorrow.

Loadsa daisies, & easy to plant one's foot on more than seven. Birds singing like mad. A pair of great crested grebes dancing in the Kennet yesterday. Coots building a nest. Rooks collecting nest material. I dug out the bottom of the compost bin yesterday (finding a long-lost teaspoon), & cut the grass when we got back from our ride today. Sitting in a pub garden at lunchtime on a CTC ride.

Lots of celandines in the verges today, plus dog's mercury in flower, a solitary white deadnettle & a clump of red deadnettles. No primroses visible, though the first were in flower on a sunny bank near Warwick on Friday.

Surprisingly lots of wild daffodils were in flower. It's odd, since they are normally about a fortnight later than the cultivated varieties, and odder still that there were still many (probably wild) snowdrop flowers nearby.

Is it my imagination, or is spring progressing faster than usual (i.e. not just earlier) this year?

I've seen a lot of primroses here (Berkshire, S. Oxfordshire) & further south. Celandines - tick. Huge numbers of snowdrops a couple of weeks ago, now fading, but yes, wild daffodils at the same time. Crocuses a-plenty. Mrs B has commented on the sakura, i.e. cherry blossom.

It does seem to be roaring ahead.

I counted 61 frogs in the St Nicks pond today, all shagging like mad. Lots of spawn, and noise!

I thought I saw some here. Apple too.

These are no longer signs of approaching spring, spring is here.

That reminds me, there was a migrating toad roadsign on yesterday's ride, somewhere around Clapton.

Can't find the signs on Streetview. Are they seasonal?

Presumably, I don't remember them being there for the Tasty Cheddar. That's what the newsletter implies too.

The first municipal lawnmower of the season: a car park in central Swansea. Must have taken all of a quarter of an inch off. Presumably a contractual thing.

We were installing toad fences a fortnight ago & will remove them when the migration is over. They're more effective than road signs, but depend on local volunteers emptying the toads (et. al.) out of the buckets every morning.

I find it hard to believe that anyone in the relevant Highway Authority would use resources to take the signs down once they had been installed.

Meanwhile our garden pond is nearly half full of mating frogs & nearly half full of frogspawn. It's pushed the "water" level up quite a lot.
