Car Garmin nuvi 2300 - Map Image help Wtd.

Hi,

*** This is as a Warning as well as a Help Wanted ***

I have a ~2012 Garmin for our car. I noticed that it had a few out of date roads and saw on Garmin's website that I could update the software. As it was free I did this, but found afterwards that the detailed UK map was no longer on the Garmin (or may be  - but I can't locate it and its states

Unable to Unlock Map

on startup. Having missed the section on Back Up Garmin prior to updating I lost our UK maps. I have found though, that I can use the standard OSM free map Image file but the search function for obtaining directions is not as functional as the original Garmin map.

Does anyone have an early 201X Garmin Nuvi or similar model and if so a working map file? Or does anyone have a suggestion to which OSM maps are best for route finding on the OSM website please?

I also found the Car Garmin does not have a huge memory but does have a Micro SD slot. Placing a map image on it does not help as I have been unable to direct the Garmin to use the map image to the SD card. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

I've not used a Nuvi myself. Which OSM maps have you tried? I'd start with the ones from here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
Though yes, there can be problems searching for addresses with some models of Garmin.

For the SD card, the maps have to be in the right folder. It depends on the model, but it probably needs a folder named "Garmin" or "Maps", so try either of those. And the map file should be named gmapsupp.img.

Or you could try using Garmin Basecamp to install the map onto the Nuvi, that should put it in the correct place.
Using Basecamp to install the map may also improve searching for addresses.

I have used my OSM maps I used for my eTrex 20 and placed it in the /MAP directory. It appears to work and has some search functions. I have some basic velo maps (gmapsupp.img) on the UK and they look a little bare on the car Garmin and the search is not brilliant. I have been corresponding with a mate on here via PM and he sent me a file which has UK and Netherlands which is everything I need for now. Not sure how he did it but I'm very grateful.
