Byercycles Aravis Supertourist
2x Ixon IQ on lowrider bosses
1x TL1100 & 1x Fenderbot
Garmin Vista HCx
30mm Marathon Racers
Brooks B17
Bagman Expedition QR
Nelson LF containing...

1 spare tube
Puncture repair kit
3 tyre levers
Spare Marathon Racer
3 home made tyre boots
Spare chain links
Multitool
Allen keys for bolts that aren't served by the multitool
Chaintool
Waterproof jacket (Endura Lazer - heavier than a Montane featherlite but infinitely more waterproof)
Rainlegs
1 massive flapjack per 50km & 1 for luck.
Cable lock
Blackburn mini pump

I see people with teenie little wedge packs that barely protrude from beneath their saddles. I have absolutely no idea how they quieten the paranoid voices that come to them the night before the ride and describe vividly the calamity that will befall them if they fail to plan for catastrophic failure of nearly every component on the bike.

Honestly, I wish the voices would FO. I find myself doing ridiculous things, like going over my tyres in the kitchen the week before and the night before with a light and a pair of tweezers picking out any minute fragment of stone in case it works its way through on the ride. That, despite the fact that in over 16,000km, I've had 2 punctures whilst commuting, and I never check my tyres usually.

This has changed a lot.

Summer
Madone 4.7 - no guards
Etrex30
Ortlieb 2.x litre saddlebag
Crankbros multitool
Tube
Speedier lever
Bontrager combo minipump / inflator
2xco2
tyreboots
zipties
chain links
money/cards

Depending on weather
very lightweight Northwave waterproof jacket
Endura gillet

>300
spare tyre
Ixon light

Winter
Mostly as above but...
Madone 2.3 with full guards
Barley
Softshell jacket

The big change was moving somewhere hilly. Light bikes FTW.

I'm nearly out what with this recent crash.

I've gone for some of those ludicrously expensive Swissstop blue BXP pads in the hope it's give me a bit more control.

Thread resurrection....

I think  "Leopard print tights guy" makes a better ride report than "Alan".

I disagree :)

Revision A to reply #72

Longstaff relegated to non-audax rides.

Trek carbon now default audax bike.(assuming  that current "return-to-audaxing" thinking is maintained)

Since this has just been resurrected I was jut pondering on my kit, other people's kit, and my experience on the road of what myself and others have actually needed. I do carry a fair few bits and bobs with me since I'm pretty self sufficient fettling wise these days. I often stop to help others when they haven't got something they need. Things I carry that have helped other riders over the past 3 years are:

Zip ties and/or insulating tape. Amazing what you can fix with these  ;D Broken mudguards are my most common reason for providing these to people.

A decent pump. I can't believe how often my question 'are you ok?' to the fairy-visited results in a 'have you got a decent pump?'. The pressure my Lezyne Road Drive can achieve even with just me pumping it is a source of surprise. If I CBA then I just use a CO2 cartridge on them.

M5 bolts. It's amazing how often people's rack bolts fall out.

Chain tool and 10 speed quick links. Seems many people are not geared up for a chain breakage, and even more surprising how a few don't know how to use a chain tool  :o

Tyre boots.

Latex gloves or if too late for that baby wipes  ;D

Spare tubes. Some don't seem to think of worst case scenario and take just patches, or one tube and patches, which doesn't help much when you get a pinch flat after changing the tube the first time.

Valve extender for deep section rims. People might find this hilarious because I don't Audax on a bike with deep section rims, but I carry one because I've twice given one to a rider who ran out of long valve tubes, couldn't get any more and was about to pack because if it.

Pretty much what Feline carries.

It's been way too much for every one of my rides, but you realise what will happen the moment you decide not to carry it all?

You can end up in some remote places, when everyone is in bed and the landscape makes it impractical to build a railway line to the skoggy lane you are standing in (wishing you had a chain tool or a magic link).

Above all it means I can ride relaxed, not worrying about having a spate of punctures or a broken chain.  Having that safety-blanket that self-sufficiency provides is worth the slight weight penalty.

To be honest I'm even thinking of ditching the tiny, but superb,Lezyne pump for my full size Zefal "riot baton".
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Been noticing lately that 50% of what I take stays in the saddlebag, but when I go through the list it all seems so friggin' reasonable.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Pretty well - mostly clothing that I might need but rarely do.  In 2007 I did PBP with a spare pair of shorts I never changed into because it was so cold. Back at the hotel afterwards I had a lift all to myself.

FWIW I've put my long-distance checklist on here.  Some bits of it e.g. alarm clock have been superseded. It used to be quite amusing to see folks' faces when I pulled up at a bus shelter mid-afternoon, stretched out on the bench and set my alarm clock by my head. Genouillères are knee-warmers and manchettes ditto arms. Ginger is crystallized, pain d'épices is like gingerbread, Renutryl (alias Rentokil) is a wee bottle of dynamite. K7 is shorthand for cassette. Any other bits in French don't matter.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight
