Path maps for Austria - Etrex30
« on: 09 June, 2013, 03:07:23 pm »
Since mountain bikes now possibly even outnumber the walkers on Austrian mountain paths, this seems a good place to ask for recommendations for path maps for Austria (Tyrol) for the Etrex30.  I already have Garmin Euro maps but I'm looking for GPS maps for the off road walking/biking network.

I've tried several of the various Euro velo/fiets/OSM etc sites, but only confused myself on coverage, file type and so on. Any recommendations?

garmin.openstreetmaps.nl is usually a good place to start. You'll want a topo map with contours if you've got options, and I'd expect you'd download a file with a .IMG extension (it might be a zip file with a .img file inside it).

Looking at the site I'd download the Routable Bicycle file and select Austria from the country drop-down. Put the file on your eTrex and see if it's got the detail you need.

garmin.openstreetmaps.nl is an excellent source but AFAIK it doesn't offer contours.  You can get European contours (as a 'free sample') separately from http://gpsmaps.de/ but compiling these into a usable form (ie a single transparent IMG file) is a whole level more technical than simply downloading the IMG file from the Dutch site.  (On the E30 it is slightly preferable to have the contours split off into a separate file anyway, as this allows you to turn them on and off.)

Yes the easiest option is probably http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
Personally I usually prefer the 'Generic Routable' style, with the Mapnik typ file. As it is has standard colours for roads, though it doesn't specifically highlight cycle routes etc.

You could try OpenFietsMap. http://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/europe
Its a similar style to the Routable Bicycle / Openfietsmap Lite from the above site, but does include contours. And it is only available in large chunks, so would be a larger download.
