Sainsbury's bread is fine, Morrisons is very good (for supermarket bread) even Asda make a decent fist of it so why is Tesco's bread so rubbish ?

I likes Tesco bread.

It's as good as or better than the local bakeries, and more variety.

The alternative supermarkets here are Waitrose

or the Co-op

I think it must vary betwwen stores. Our Tesco in Ely has twice the bakery range of some bigger Tescos.

I used to get Tesco organic wholemeal sliced loaves as a stable part of my diet before we bought a bread maker
I wouldn't say it is the best bread ever made but it's edible and perfectly ok

I've noticed that Tesco's white bread is dryer and more tasteless than the other supermarkets (and not as nice as the bread from the Gregg's round the corner). It also doesn't seem to last as long.

Exactly. It's always dry. Their french sticks are the worst culprits.

The bread from our local Sainsbury's is horrible. So are Waitrose's offerings.

The local ASDA does a nice loaf. Not tried Tesco.

We only have a Tesco and I used to buy bread there. Its bland , fluffy and white. Ok I guess. I rarely use tesco now and get my bread from a proper high street baker. The bread there has more flavour especially the granary which I really like. I like making my own but I don't have the room at the moment. This is making me hungry

They can. But not always and not in every store. Much like aother supermarkets. I used to think Safeway bread was always dry. And I don't like all Tesco breads - their standard French Stick / Baguette is disgusting, but the sourdough stick is great.

I like Tesco's Hovis Granary Sliced Tin. That's baked in-store (with Hovis flour, I suppose).

Very nice toasted with baked beans, Marmite and ginger marmalade.

Oh dear, mustn't talk about food any more. I'm on the last few hours of a 48-hour fast before an endosopy tomorrow. I'm 'ungry!!

God I am in love with Sainsbury's bread, and their bagels! Their sun-dried tomato and basil bloomer is only bettered by their onion bloomer. Om nom nom. They even offered to bake the onion bloomer for me as they had run out.

Some of the best bread is M&S's, far better than Tesco which is poorly baked and too heavy; and sometimes Coop and Sainsbury's. In general though it cannot be compared to continental bread, sadly.

All the cheap bread is baked in the same places. It just has different packages on it just like the cheap cereal and biscuits.
I'd often go up to the bakery at Wakefield chat to the Tesco driver there, deliver the load to the Aldi warehouse in Manchester and collect empties trays from the Morrissons warehouse on the way back down.
Waitrose and probably others use part baked bread which has been frozen, collected by the lorry load from Theale (iirc) and delivered like that.
The crispy warm bread that everyone likes has come from their freezer then "baked in-store" for when they need it.

It's a long time since any supermarket bread was particularly tasty.

It's rare these days for us to eat bread that hasn't come out the bread maker.

We use the local bakery, or bake our own.

I cannot imagine why anybody expects a supermarket to produce a quality product...
