There's a big Lunt near Coventry

I once worked with a Lunt. Her maiden name was Wiper, so I'm not sure which was worse.

I've mentioned this before, but I once drove through the village of Faulkland (near Bath) in a tropical rainstorm, and nearly crashed the car, I was laughing so hard at the lovingly-modified sign (white paint to obscure the "A", black paint to turn the "L" into a "C").

Reminds me of the joke:
Signmaker up a ladder, fitting letters to the side of a "Pollocks and Son" factory:
"Can I have a 'P' please, Bob?"
"I haven't got a 'P', only a 'B'."
"Well we've made a right mess of the 'London Brick Company', then."

Surely a similar thing happens in Scunthorpe, but with white paint, not black?!

Why don't they do what the good folk of Fulking, Sussex, did?  Put the village name-signs on 10-foot posts?  And they're made out of individual shaped letters mounted on to a batten: far harder to alter!

The people in F***ing, Austria don't have their signs defaced - why bother? -  but they were getting stolen a lot so they're now extra-securely fixed.

I still smirk at the knowledge that there is a Mayor of F***ing, who usually has to give a statement to the English-speaking media about such frivolities.

That's the case in Llandewi Brevi also.  A few audaxs go through there, and until a few years ago it was a sleepy little village :)

I once had a pleasant doze on a bench there in the early hours.

According to the local website, the area was first documented in 1251 in the Chartulary of Cockersand Abbey where it was referred to as "de Lund".

Talking of which...that breed of dog that had its name changed here for reasons of wartime acceptability is still known in the US as a German Shepard, and I believe that name is now the favoured one here

Anyway, back when it wasn't I was at a conference in the US and our host, who was involved with a chap from the French-German border,  mentioned in conversation that "my boyfriend is an Alsatian". Cue much worried confusion amongst the Brits, and an Alexi Sayle-alike piping up "Is that a hobby, like, or do you make films ?"

:o
