Canal Creatures

I took my macro lens for a walk next on the canal path this morning. Here are some of the critters I snapped.

The head on the last one reminds me of the mother-in-law.  ;D

It's a Tamron 180mm F/3.5 1:1 macro.

Very impressive shots, I've now got an urge to rush out and see how good the macro on my lenses are. :)

(btw, is it only me who can't see the first image?  I get "This Photo Is Currently Unavailable" from Flikr).
Actually, it is rocket science.

Should be fixed now - that'll teach me to fiddle with them once they've been uploaded..

Now that one is really good, you can see the fine detail of the wings very well.

Well done with the close-up shots there John. I often sit in the garden watching the damsel flies hunting, here's one (yesterday morning) just finishing a light snack

before zooming off for seconds. We are surrounded by old gravel/sand extraction pits here, and see lots of damsels and dragons (the 'big boys' haven't shown up yet this year). I keep trying to get a shot of them in flight, but a compact isn't really up to the job. We get a lot of the type in the pic and when they are in flight the wings appear very dark brown (almost black) and they look just like miniature biplanes performing stunt flying routines.

Snap!  Mean looking beasts, very scorpion-like, aren't they?  This one was at Chartwell today.

A quick perusal of my Collins Field Guide suggest that it's known as a Scorpion Fly ("Abomen up-turned... downward extension of head to form stout beak")
