I've now found that I need a macro lens and a decent telephoto.

As you have only the D40 you cant use CLS with off camera flash, but a SB6/800 and a remote lead would be a really good thing for macro.

My 'wants list' currently runs to a decent superwide zoom (sigma 10-20), and an 80-200/2.8 or similar

A long telephoto would be nice but isn't quite justifiable yet.

Which lens do you have?

Kit lens that came with the camera - 18-55. It seems really good, but I want to do MORE (which does, granted, mean learning more how to use all the different settings granted).
