A bit of a shock this morning but I think I like it !
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I like the wider pages but dislike the the paler text. I'm finding it a little harder to read.

The old one wasn't broken so why fix it.

I'll keep using it as it's the best/most reliable news site by far but the new layout is'nt an improvement

Is this something that has changed today?

I noticed a major change in the BBC's website a few weeks ago. I hate it when they do that sort of stuff. Thoroughly disorientating.

The old one lacked a fundemental point... the ability to see news that wasn't on the home page and wasn't known to the reader.

I get the "BBC Breaking News Alert" emails, which all just say "blah blah blah. For more details: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news ".  If it's a matter of interest I then have to spend ages looking for that item if it isn't on the homepage (why can't the alert email have a direct link?).

For all other news though, all you see is the headlines on the homepage.  If an article isn't linked from there you can't read it, unless you already know about it from another source.

I hope the new site will be more usable than the old.  (And like Hellymedic it's giving me a headache to read the new pale text)

They're spoofs?  You mean Father Christmas isn't still alive? :o

That's the real reason the BBC changed their layout.

They still haven't cottoned to the fact that not everyone's screen is the same width by the look of things.  The new layout is optimised for 1024x768 so will be bloody useless on a TV browser.

I don't like the new layout. They are rolling out across the whole of bbc.co.uk eventually and I think it's just making it look less professional. The old layout of the news site had nice contrast between text and background and was easy to read quickly, the new one is no where near as good IMHO.

Any website that is written for a specific screen size, or limits itself to a certain size, is the work of the devil. It's one (technical) reason I dislike the C*cl*ch*t forum.

I quite like it, although it seems a bit busy, maybe I need to get used to it.

The new design doesn't work that well on a Mac (text is a bit tiny, unless you adjust the size).
