Is that bark mulch they scratch in?

My dad always used to give his hens grain for 11ses (mixed wheat, barley & kibbled maize IIRC). This was over and above their balanced mash / pellet diet and was purely to give them something to do.

If they are busy looking for stuff they are much less likely to peck each other.

Bark chippings, yes.  The Chicken Lady said we should use the stuff that B&Q sell for kids' playgrounds.

They look all fluffy and warm...

...and tasty... O:-)
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

They're hybrid chickens bred to be layers Andy - not much meat on them.  You need fatter ones for tasty!

You need a top on that run. Otherwise they will get out and Mrs Fox will get in.

Lovely photographs - how many chickens have you got and have you named them yet?  :D

I miss our neighbours' chooks, Gladys and Rosita, we had 4 of their eggs as a farewell present and they were wonderful. Sweetcorn was their crack cocaine.

This might sound indulgent but our ex-neighbours went on a course on how to look after them. They had something called an 'Egglu' for them which was meant to be fox and cat proof. Needless to say that George the cat was very unimpressed by G & R and kept his distance.

We took the photos before screwing the top down.  Otherwise we would have no chickens left by now!!

We looked at the Eglu, but it's quite small & we wanted more than two chickens.  The one we've got is also meant to be foxproof - it certainly looks very sturdy (I wouldn't be able to move it by myself, so unless the foxes have been at the creatine we should be okay...)

We got the Eglu cube which is large enough for up to 10 chickens, although we only have 3 at present - to be increased in due course. It is also fox-proof with the anti-dig skirt around the edge (which you can't see in the pictures as I've buried it under the gravel).

We were advised against using bark because it quickly goes rancid in wet weather.  If the run is not covered it is better to get wood chips (from the local tree surgeon).  If you cover the run, which I do, then horse bedding of various sorts is good - I use Hemcore, but there are others such as Easibed and Aubiose that do the job too.  I also put the Hemcore in the poo trays (dries it out, makes it easier to empty) and nest box.  I line the run, nest box and poo trays with Stalosan F disinfectant to kill parasites and worm eggs.  Also worm them monthly with Verm-X and three monthly with Flubenvet.

We decided on the Eglu after visiting a few chicken-keepers.  The wooden ones tend to smell bad and you have to spend such a lot of time cleaning them to prevent this.  The plastic ones tend to be easier to clean and don't have crevices for the red mite to live in.

However we are thinking of building a walk-in run on the same site later in the year, as we'd like to add a couple more chooks to the collection.  They get to free-range virtually every day anyway whenever we are at home.

I went on a half-day chicken-keeping course and it was very useful as I picked up a lot of tips.

Lots of gratuitous pictures Here.  This is our set-up

Would I be right in thinking that the people you bought them from specialise in "pet" hens? Yours seem remarkably happy & friendly with people. When my dad got his, initially a dozen at a time, but up to 50 at a time when he expanded his empire on retirement, they were really frantic when we first got them. They calmed down eventually and became accustomed to everything with the exception of the ferret, whose appearance in the garden for his daily trot around would always send them into the rafters.

I don't know about "pet hens", but the poulty farm we got them from clearly catered for the West London crowd.  Dahling...

Also, ours are hybrids which are less aggressive / nervous.  They discouraged us from getting the pure breed ones which are more prone to aggressive or frantic behaviour.

Any chance that you could try and prove/disprove the urban legend that you can "park" a chicken by painting a white line on the ground and holding the chicken with one eye to the line?  The theory is that the chicken's brain gets confused by a straight line running off in both directions and therefore the bird won't move until you come and pick it up again.

Cruel?  No more so than working TVs in Swindon shop windows.

Phil tried something similar to that at the weekend.  The ladies were having none of it.

I didn't realise you had to draw the line while the chicken was watching.
