When you say you have heard good things about it, are you referring to the 4.8km ride home ?

Some of it is up hill!

I will make enquiries, wait one...

Just a thought for the coming weeks, what about a Colchester pub? It's years since we've visited one and there are many excellent choices.

For those too feeble to ride, the non cyclist/s are provided with several turn left opportunities to a train station

Colchester pubs will be in short supply for so long as Jiber is in charge of the calendar  :P

Haven't been to the Cross Keys since it changed hands in the last few months - should probably go and pay my respects, so I'm game if everyone else is?

I feel an executive decision coming on.  Would anyone like to divest me of my powers before it's too late?

BTW, I'm well up for a raid on Colchester.

Two for the summer maybe as a bit further afield, but these are worth adding to the list if they're not on already?

Prince of Wales, Broxted
The Bell, Castle Hedingham

I know they're north of the A120 and therefore in bow and arrow country...

And maybe the Horse & Groom in Cornish Hall End, but I haven't been there.

Cornish Hall End sounds like an intriguing place, not somewhere I've heard of before.

As an aside, has it ever been a consideration to aim for an earlier start for the far flung places? So instead of a Spa Road departure at 7:30pm with an arrival of 9pm, leaving a smidgen earlier to arrive at 8:30pm, with the notional aim to depart on the return leg at 10:30pm?

It never has but there was a move to more miles less beer in 2015 that met with "mixed" results.

Josser's suggestions average out around the 60k each way mark for me which is about the same as hatfield broad oak.  I would be up for those lengths of rides during June/July.  We seemed to miss out a bit on using the lighter nights this year and last and it would be a shame to do so again.

Winter Wednesdays are for "central" locations and midsummer Wednesdays for going forrin and to far flung places.

That's the trouble when you keep turning left.

It used to be a decent pub. I have been past a few times recently, It's still open.

If you go back to post #1 in 2009 you’ll see the original concept was “more miles less beer” as back in those days we used to enjoy a Friday Night Ride to the Pub which was the opposite. I think it’s fair to say it was Oaky who fooked the original concept within about a month!

I concur. If only we had a list of favourite pubs that are worthy of visiting, then we could tag them as 'summer' and 'winter'. Could still mix and match a bit, but would act as a guide for the planning department.

Cross Keys is ok by me - I can revisit Dagnets Lane by night, for some more COR ...

More Miles, Less Beer for long summer nights: PBP 'training' - we have done the Bell at Castle Hedingham before, nice unspoilt pub I recall. Good pubs in Finchingfield and Bardfield too. We've made it to Forrin Parts/Suffolk Borders a few times, but I don't recall less beer though - Anchor, Nayland; Three Bottles, Yeldham ['mechanical mishap' caused a premature halt to an attempt to go Forrin] - there's lot of other good ones up that way, but would be a 40 - 55 mile round trip up that way from Witham.

If I might be so bold... EXECUTIVE DECISION ALERT...

We go to The Cross Keys at White Notley this Wednesday.  I think I am right in saying the most direct route is via TMNH.  Any voices of dissent?

With so many perks to the job, I can see jiberjaber fighting hard to retain the role though. Mind you, josser will bring some insider information, and no doubt will be able to get us discounted beverages as his contacts fight for the chance to host a MEMWNS event. Josser could become the Bernie Ecclestone of ACME.
