Title: Tour of Britain 2014 route

Announced today and in homage to Flatus, they are going past his house!

No Mynydd Caerffili this year, but we had a good innings - 5 ascents in the last 3 years. The Tumble is a killer climb anyway, if a little desolate at the top.

So not only is it a Tour of England, but it's a Tour of England that tries as hard as it can to avoid going anywhere near anywhere I've ever lived in my life.  Oh well.

I'll be there!  I doubt it will have the crazy vibe of Caerffili but it's closer to my house!

No Stoke or Staffordshire stage this year...  :-[  I suppose we have been well treated over the last few years so hey ho, I'll just have to head off to Liverpool for the stage there and then off to a hillside in North Wales for that stage. I think they missed a trick by not ending Stage 2 at the top of the Great Orme.

I have the whole week off but can't see me travelling to see the southern stages: a few stages in Scotland would have been nice.

God, I am a moany old git! Sorry.  ;D

Might have to see if I can slip off early on the Friday and cycle out to a good spot near Pewsey.

I think it is paving the way for a Tour d'Ecosse following September 2014.

For those of us in the Bristol/South-Wales area, I think the British road race championships will give a better spectator opportunity, especially for those unable to get time off in the week (wifey not best pleased at finish in Bristol on a school day!).

No more than 5 miles from my house.

I'm glad they've finally recognised the significance of Flatus and myself in British English bike racing.

The climb up to Upper Parliament St from the river is a bit of a slog.....

The stage 6 route spends a lot of time within easy riding distance of Fuzzy Towers.

Leave embargo already in place for my mob ::-)

Good job I'm hoping to be working elsewhere.

Not risking an excursion into Scotland the week before our big vote, I see. That's a shame as it's always been a cracking day out, if sometimes a little wet...

I'll wave across the wall.

I drove a bit of the route from Stroud to Wotton-under-Edge yesterday. Surfaces to rival Paris Roubaix and a TL controlled single line working section that doesn't look likely to move any time soon on the climb through Horsley. Some tight corners on the steep descent into Wotton might catch out the unwary.

Having ridden the PR route, the Stroud to Wooton-under-Edge road is silky smooth in comparison!

Hmmm. Second thoughts.  I reckon we can catch it go through Haywards Heath and still have time to scoot south, head up one of the bostalls on the South Downs and then sneak in to the top of Ditchling Beacon from the side.

Sadly even if I can get the day off, I think cycling over to Chinnor hill and back would be optimistic for me. If I go to see it, I'll probably end up looking for a good vantage point just south of Wantage.

I am going to take the day off tomorrow and cycle to Clifton for the finish of the Worcester->Bristol stage. There is talk of bike parking provided - the site says information on this will be provided "shortly".

Does anyone know what the arrangements are, particularly where any temporary parking will be set up?

I'm taking Friday off and planning to watch somewhere.

On reflection, the best option for me will be to walk 1/2 a mile down the road and watch the race coming through the narrow bridge under the railway by Berkhamsted station and then pass round Berkhamsted castle.

Bristol City Council replied promptly to my question on Twitter:

So bike parking near the promo area at the finish. Who else is going?

And I shall be on the Leighton Buzzard road watching the finish of Friday's stage. I note also from the warning signs on my way in to work that that section of road will be closed from Thursday evening until Saturday morning. That'll increase the traffic around my office!

A few of us were on the finish line, great atmosphere up there today, the race organisers are promoting the sport well.

Fair play to Wiggins and Sky, they were the last team/coach to leave the arrivee having done all the photo stuff.

It's going through Horsham on Saturday but I won't be there to watch it.  I'll be driving the 22 bus from Dorking to Holmbury St Mary all day.  That's the way my year is going, days off never coincide with anything I want to do.

Home from Germany, bike clean, kit sorted (YACF or Swindon RC? who am I kidding, YACF all the way), camera battery charging.

I can't decide where to head though - shall I head to Devizes for the first intermediate sprint, or towards what i think is the "climb" into Wantage?

Apparently intermediate sprints are rarely much to get excited about; I considered the one in Blewbury, but will give it a miss.  I thought about the 'climb' into Wantage, and AFAICS it's not much of a climb that will slow them down too much, but it may be OK.  My position nearby will see them appearing over the hill, and sweeping passed (quickly) - hopefully separating around a central island in road.  At least it's close to work.

Hemel's finish line as a short stagger from my front door, I wandered down last night and this morning to take a nose.  It's a busy road and was spookily quiet last night.   I anticipate a long lunch before watching the finish.  (I am hoping that my son does not follow through on his threat to moon at the riders  :hand:)

Amazing stage - just watched recording of the live race.  Interesting that Dowsett made a pact that Brandle could take the stage, since Dowsett was potentially in line for the yellow jersey.

What do you reckon about tomorrow? Wiggins could advance a few places. Kwiatkowski looks strong though.

Kwiatkowski took the Strava KOM (http://www.strava.com/segments/770191) up the Beacon. 3 mins 59. David Lopez was 4:01. I'm not telling mine, but it's got more numbers than that  :'(

My somewhat optimistic prediction for the final GC podium:

I was at Old Boat Corner (the other end from Ditchling Beacon) and, my goodness me, after the be-bah-bee-bee's and woo-woo-woo-woos of the speeding marshals, police and lead cars, it was amazing to see the speed of the riders bombing round the corner and hurtling down Coldean Lane. Couldn't recognise anyone riding.

Needless to say, by the time the riders did come round, my card on the camera was full. Excellent. I did photograph the television chaps on their motorbike.

Dah-Dah!

A belated report of Friday's stage watching on the lower slopes of Chinnor Hill.

After a gentle meander to Chinnor, (all of 6 miles!) when riding through Chinnor I was asked to stop  by a lovely lady in a flouro vest to allow 200 schoolkids to cross the road.  "My pleasure" I said, as I wasn't in a hurry.

The group of roadies who then gathered behind me then proceeede to  take the mick out of my laden Carradice with stool bungied to the outside.  My temporary companions of the road stopped taking the mick when I mentioned than  I'd shortly be enjoying the use of the stool, whilst  further enjoying the flask of tea and snacks in the aforementioned saddlebag!  :)

As we rode off after the children had finished crossing the road, all 200 cheered loudly as we rode past as a thank you for stopping! ;D Accordingly lots of adults whom I'd guess are not familiar with seeing professional cyclists, then joined in thinking we were something official!

Choose a random driveway to sit in which afforded a good view of the approach to Chinnor Hill. A chap in a KotM jersey joined me with a small child on his shoulder. I'm guestimating she must have been about 4 yo.   She was delighted when the owners of the house whose drive we were occupying appeared with a selection of cowbells, and so we all proceeded to play the "what reaction do we get if we cowbell you" game to the passing motor bikes and cars prior to (and post) the race coming through. Lots of waves, beeps, thumbs ups, siren blasts, and classic Euro team car two tone horns, passed the time and added to the atmosphere.  ;D

A great atmosphere as the race came through and then a lovely gently ride home - a top couple of hours on a sunny Friday afternoon.

Two and a half years later, the Tour has gone but those TLs and roadworks are still there....

I think Stroud district council are still saving up their pennies to shore up the side of the valley.
In fact they have disappeared off Gloucestershires map of roadworks.

The Horsley bit will soon be closed for up to 14 weeks as £0.5m is spent on repairing the land slip.
