I found a discarded cigarette packet, while I pulled over to adjust my gears (new cables bedding in).  There was a price label on it: "£8.35p"  Fucking hell.  I wish I could give up smoking.  You'd pay for n+1 in no time.

If you still smoke, how come you were surprised by the price? Surely you pay this every day/other day?

A 5m long awning from a caravan/campervan. The road's a bit narrow at that point, and I suspect the projection of the awning caught on the adjacent trees.

Indeed, sorry.  The only smoking I've ever done was passively.

I consulted Sainsbury's website to see how much cigarettes cost.

Many are over £10 for 20; that's £5K/pa.

More cash for other things!

"What manner of terrible pikey fags can you get for that little money?" asked Mr Larrington while incinerating slightly over fifty pence.  A carton of 200 Marlboro Gold is £107 from Mr Sainsbury's House Of Toothy Comestibles.

£8.35 for 20 is within the same order of magnitude as 200 for £107, or 1 for slightly over 50p.  Hence my surprise.

Blimey.  I remember when 20 Number 6 cost 1d each.  1/10 for a pack of 20.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Cigarettes are the one thing period dramas struggle with. How many 1930's to 1970's coppers (detectives or otherwise) could afford to smoke king size? I remember how small a Players no.6 or an Embassy Regal was when I started my smoking career.

I picked up about 25 and 2 were unused.

They're really strong, apparently made from 2mm thick steel, they must be useful for something!
