Location filming fees ?
« on: 05 June, 2019, 06:35:02 pm »
I've just had a flyer in my mailbox saying that a TV company wants to shoot scenes for something called "Tin Star" on my balcony!     Wiki shows that Series 3 is going to be in Liverpool https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin_Star_(TV_series)   ,  the production company & location manager get loads of hits on Google as well.

I'm hoping they are going to be offering a fee for this !   Any idea what the daily rate for such things are ?

The flyer is in English, Urdu & Cantonese ??   Arabic & Mandarin would have been more appropriate for my estate.

I've just texted my film producer friend the question - let's see what she comes back with.
With Tim Roth and Christine Hendricks headlining the cast it could be generous - but, given that the series was originally produced for Sky, it could very much be price based - ie not very much.
At worst I would expect it to be a few hundred squid.

I expect they would hope to have to pay nothing. When a company asked if they could use Pitsford Hall as a backdrop for a movie it all went quiet after I asked what they were offering.

Hiring out your home for interior shooting can be very lucrative but there are lots of variables. Multiple thousands is pretty usual in London on big productions using one room. The amount of upheaval can be massive though.

Tin Star is an awesome programme, though we only watched the first series - it's a big one  :-D

Liverpool is a big destination for location filming, usually the nice Georgian & Victorian bits though.   They must be after something a bit more "street" & "gritty" https://www.liverpoolpicturebook.com/2015/05/myrtle-gardens.html

From  my film producer  friend:

It depends a bit on what they want to do
Take over his place, set dress and run cables everywhere, how many crew will be in his property and for how long , eg half a day, one day , so they need to use other rooms too , the size of the operation influences the price and level of disruption to him
Is the view from the balcony something they really want or are there other properties next door nearby they could get the same view from?
As it’s Liverpool they probably won’t expect to pay London location rates , if it’s big disruption with lots of crew and stuff I said above and a full day of access , should ask for maybe £1,000, or even 1200 if a lot of work
If on the small side / scale and not much time eg half day around 500
But sometimes it’s hard to know what budgets they have , if it’s a very high spec property you can get quite high fees
Also if it’s part of a block of properties then would need other people’s permission too that there may be a level of disruption to others !
Film crews take up a lot of space , noisy , put down protective matts everywhere and run cables everywhere etc
You have to be a bit prepared for it! Hence getting decent money for the disruption
Sorry probably too long a reply

I'm wondering if they realise that these flats have no lifts & everything will need to be hoiked up 8 flights of stairs  :-)     They only mention the balcony outside the flat & a filming period of 1-3 days within a 3 week block, possibly more.

Most definitely not a high spec property!

Pretty certain I'd need permission from the management company as well.    I'll have a chat & see if it's worth me tidying up the crap that's stored out there.  If I can get a few hundred quid for essentially doing nowt it will go towards a jollyday.    I'll have to charge them for putting a blind over the kitchen window though.

Some history here.  https://municipaldreams.wordpress.com/2015/02/10/liverpools-interwar-multi-storey-tenements-building-an-a1-community-in-a-properly-planned-township-of-flats/

The place was semi-derelict in the 80's when Barratts bought it for a nominal fee, did a full renovation (it won awards for the concept, rather than the quite shoddy execution) and sold them off as private homes.  It's right over the road from the main campus of Liverpool University & it's now buy to let paradise,  i've also had leaflets from estate agents saying they have buyers lined up this week.

Surely there will be a number of flats close to yours from which they would obtain an equivalently satisfactory view. If so, I would guess that they've asked a number of other residents, and they may be looking to see who pitches at the lowest rate.

It may be time to form a cartel and agree a minimum price between you all.

I've just spoken to the chap & they may want to use the interior as well, which would possibly involve redecoration to meet their requirements & then re-redecoration to meet mine!   I've been putting off new wallpaper for ages  ;)     They want it to look like a poor council flat,  I'll have to hide the Le Creuset pans & the antique furniture!

He wouldn't talk money until he'd seen the place & a visit is not convenient this week , so I'm going to email some photos.     He did say that he's already agreed permission to film with the management co & would be paying them a fee.

Would this have any implications re my home insurance ?

Sounds like you could be quids in
ETA: Regarding the insurance, I'd ask them.
If they can provide cover, the difference to your premium may be insignificant when compared to what you may receive from the production company.
If this does become a runner, it may be worth your while in buttering up (bottles of wine and or chocolates are more conventional) your neighbours before the event.
I know of instances where neighbours have fallen out big time, with an individual who has had extensive shoots
carried out on said individual's  premises.
