"Cyclists dismount and use footpath..."

Advisory or mandatory?

On my commute.  These roadworks are probably 100-150m long.   There was a digger blocking footpath...

I've never seen one of those before.

Recommended course of action? Hoof it over as you pass (on the  road).

What's the top speed of a digger like that? Would it be any good as a derni?

I went through some temporary lights today. They were too long and didn't allow enough time for me to get from my end to the other, I wasn't hanging about either! The far end had a blind bend to the left and I almost had a head on with a RM van coming my way on his green light. No doubt the other queueing drivers thought I was RLJing.  ::-)

Yes, that's the serious reason why they use those signs. Sometimes, at least; sometimes it's just habit, I think. Depends on your speed of course. There's a similar sign at the — permanent — lights over the bridge on the A whatever it is heading west over the Severn at Tewkesbury. I think there are sometimes signs saying you should wait for the start of the next phase.

Makes me wonder what the USAnians do at their closures where one can wait for 20-30 minutes before doing a Several of miles behind a pilot car.  Sling the bike and rider in the back?

Advisory since, as I suspect you well know, it should not be used here:

Where the carriageway is closed but the footway remains open, a ‘Cyclists dismount and use footway’ white-on-red temporary sign can be used.

You must ensure suitable provisions are made for the safety of cyclists passing or crossing the works. Particular care is needed where cycle lanes or cycle tracks are affected by street works or road works because these routes may be especially popular with cyclists.
Cyclists might have to use other parts of the carriageway, a temporary cycle track, or an alternative route.

There were those on my commute for a few weeks.  They were resurfacing gogarburn station road, it was closed to motor traffic during the period, but cyclists were allowed through "On the footpath".
Saw plenty of cyclists going through, all of us on the road, none being dicks to the workmen doing the job.   This was in the genteel suburbs west of edinburgh: chances of cyclists being dicks are a lot lower here than in crowded city centres

There's an absolute blinder going on up Larrington Towers Road at the moment.  It's narrow enough that frequently there's space for but one vehicle to pass at a time.  Now add:
  • A lorry delivering to the Co-op horriblemarket
  • Temporary traffic lights
  • A bus which looks as though it is queueing for the lights but which has actually b0rken down
  • Another b0rken-down bus, in the middle of the light-controlled bit
Edit: And a fire engine with lights and woo-woo going.

Cue smug cyclists ;D
