300km + with a Garmin Edge 1000
« on: 20 June, 2015, 06:27:45 pm »
I'm thinking of upgrading my Edge 800 to an Edge 1000,  before I pull the trigger, can anyone confirm that the 1000 doesn't suffer from the same crashing issue which befalls my 800 on long rides? i.e. 300km plus

I know Steve Abraham is using a 1000. he doesn't seem to be having any problems as far as I'm aware?

Thanks for the responses.   I didn't realise that it was just the 800 that had this problem,  I thought it was more widespread.   I can feel a purchase coming on!   Though I am baulking at the price of the 1000 I have to admit (300 quid is the cheapest I've seen - from handtec) .   Especially as it seems the 810 doesn't suffer this bug too.   Hmmm..  how much is the bigger screen and glonass of the 1000 really worth over the 810?

I love the 3" screen of my Oregon and I use an edge 500 to collect power data, interestingly I didn't spend much more than 300 for both of them, just a thought  ;D

If you're using Garmin's vector pedals for power data then the edge 1000 is the way to go, otherwise you might want to consider other options.

With the new firmware, the Edge 510 and 810 have much improved support for the of the power data etc from the Vector pedals. I think they can do just as much with this as the Edge 1000 does.

I don't use a power meter, but starting to think that 2 devices may be the way to go, just to build in some redundancy due to Garmin flakyness.

Theres 3 reasons I want to change from my 800,
  • The 300km+ issue.  I currently save my longer rides in 200km chunks and splice back together with fitfiletools - not a massive issue but a bit of a faff .  Also means resetting my oddometer at the start and using that for the ride distance on the gps screen, just adds to the faff
  • Uploading via bluetooth/wifi.  I hardly ever get my laptop out nowdays and currently upload to strava etc via my phone via either OTG cable or sd card.  Would be great to auto upload just by pressing stop on the GPS
  • My 800 has been a bit naughty recently and occasionally doesnt recorded a file, even though it seemed to be working fine during the ride.
  • Shiny new toy - (OK 4 reasons) :-)

Thinking now that a 510 might be the way to go & carry on using the 800 as well for longer rides & for navigation.  & will also act as a backup if the 510 goes tits up mid ride.

If you haven't parted with your hard earned yet, the new edge 520 looks interesting:

Worth noting that the 520, while it does mapping (but has just 50mb internal memory for maps) and will display a track, will not give turn-by-turn directions.

True, but do you want turn directions on a secondary unit? Edge units warn you if you are off track, which is what I'm really interested in.

The 520 has a bigger screen than the 510 is smaller in size and has buttons instead of a touch screen. I was actually quite impressed.

Yes, it's a very nice piece of tech! I may well buy one as a back-up to my 800 myself, and I do like the expanded analysis features. But its navigation capabilities are (deliberately) limited, so it's worth at least pointing that out.
