If this has been done before then please merge the threads…

Saw this expired BSO on my way back from Hadleigh Castle this morning:

I was purchased by a scally
Whose name was Jack O'Malley
He rode me to the pub
And someone nicked my hub
He never oiled my chain
A wheel went again
His mates told him one day
I'm a girl's bike, so he was gay
He threw me in the sea
Thought that was the end for me
But I sit here on the rocks
Shat on by the flocks
Draped in smelly weed
But when the sea is calmer
I think I've reached nirvana

Leaning against part of the French farmhouse restaurant I was sat in last week,

It is truly abandoned and yet looks like it was "installed" to help with the atmosphere.

Nice find! Not sure if it (in the strictest terms) qualifies as a BSO though… looks more like an old BSA, although that may be unlikely given the location.  :)

Time for a confession....I don't know what BSO means

Bicycle Shaped Object. A poorly made cheap 'bicycle' that will most likely fall to pieces within a month of purchase. For example anything sold by the likes of Asda, Tesco etc. for less than £100 or so. I have seen it said that anything costing less than £300 is a BSO, but I have seen some nice bikes for sale priced less than that.

Read more here (http://www.whycycle.co.uk/buying_your_bike/beware_the_bicycle_shaped_object/).

The only reason I said your example may not qualify as a BSO is it looks like it started out as a good quality bicycle. Still a good find though and thank you for sharing it.

I've only just noticed this thread.

I too have seen the BSO depicted in the OP, when taking the dog for a walk.

This beauty was seen outside a pub adjacent to the Great Ouse, in Ely, I think, at a rare ride organised by Reg in June 2009.

A classic. You can see where the front wheel went: nicked to provide a wheel for the bike that some dickhead had locked by its front wheel.

This looks to be more a carefully crafted work of art than a discarded bike ... beside a road in Sweden.

A gritty detective with an unhappy family life will be along shortly to figure out where the bike fits in ...

In decreasing order of visibility . . .

Between Queens Road car park & river Kennet, Reading.
The bike in the background is a 1980s Barry Hoban, Tange tubing & what looks like original components.

In the Kennet, a little downriver -
(http://i432.photobucket.com/albums/qq48/Bledlow/Bikes/IMG_0482.jpg)

So invisible it's disappeared completely. Last seen with a couple of 'fly-tipping' labels on it.

"How do you double the value of a BSO?"
"Put a saddle on it."

If the saddle is a Brooks, you've probably tripled it,

I do wonder (a) who goes round stamping on bike wheels for fun and (b) how crappy a front wheel must have to be to bend like this.  I can stand on either side of the rim and balance on the axle of a decent front wheel (don't try this with a dished rear wheel, you will wreck it).

Men under the age of 25... when drunk, or frustrated in their attempts at theft. But it's also quite easy to pringle a wheel by braking heavily while turning sharply and falling off all simultaneously because a car has just cut you up on a mini-roundabout. I discovered thiswhen I was 17.

When someone complains, security usually remove the rotting bikes.  I watched an Apollo BSO go from its you-can-still-smell-the-paint maiden voyage (on which it got a puncture and was never ridden again) to a mass of rust in the 18 months before it was removed.

I would wager that many BSOs manage less than 100 miles before scrapping.

With all those yellow bikes I couldn't help thinking about New York cabs and wondered if this was where New York Bozo bikes went to die.

Might get a container of those sent over, I don't like cleaning bikes so I could just get a new one out every couple of weeks.

By the Grand Union near Watford on my off-road commute route. Not sure how it ended up being removed from the canal though.

I presume canals get dredged from time to time, and what comes up, comes up.

The Canals and Rivers Trust have members and volunteers who regularly haul stuff out of the Rochdale Canal.  Bikes and shopping trolleys are the commonest items - knives and crowbars sink into the silt.

Some brightspark, in Littlemore, has stomped on this pony...  Holey tubeless tyres, I see.

Seen on a walk round the village, behind a locked gate

Needs a bit of surface treatment, but looks sound

There's one sturdily D-locked to a signpost near here that I intend to photograph for this thread once I work out whether it's abandoned or not.  The lack of seatpost and front wheel make the status unclear.

I guess that's now pretty unambiguous:

Funnily (or not funnily) enough, I was thinking along similar lines (but more "how not to lock up your bike") about a black 1980s road frame locked to some railings not far from here. All that's left now is frame, crankset and rear mech. Everything else, including forks and pedals, long gone. Odd that the cranks haven't been taken too.

From memory, this was found on a ride organised by Regulator. I think it was in Ely, probably about 10 years ago.

Someone masked off a few bits, sprayed it, then gave up on it, left it between my flat and the beer shop.

Not the best respray I've seen, but neither the worst- that goes to the electric fat bike I sometimes see at Sainsbury's: even the tyres are spray-painted, not just overspray either.

That looks like one of those bikes you see sprayed all over and stuck in multicoloured arrangements in villages as some sort of charity display, often with worzel gummidges.
