Hurrah!  I now have a working doorbell, energised by the voles and ants that come out of the wall.  Went and bought one from Screwfix (which I should probably have done in the first place), recycled the power lead from a dead cassette deck to supply anbarism to the transformer.  All worked first time which was something of a surprise, especially to anyone who has witnessed my attempts to home-brew bicycle lighting systems.

Bah!  My feet hurt and I still have to parcel up the DOA one for collection by Nozama's Minion on Monday.  If said minion doesn't use the doorbell to attract my attention s/he will be killed utterly to DETH.

If you have an anbaric doorbell that gets its voles from the mains, I highly recommend fitting an illuminated push button.  This provides an extra hint to couriers, chuggers, meter men and the like that there might be a useful alternative to simply banging on the door.

(I have molished one that flashes angrily in response to door-banging, as an extra hint.)

I shall possibly have a look for one the next time I find myself in a DIY hellhole.  I lack the both inclination and tech-fu to do anything cleverer than wield a screwdriver1 at it, thobut.

Edit: How does the push button get its supply of anbarism to cause it to be lit?  Does it need another lot of anbaric string to convey voles and ants from for e.g. the transformer?

BN: My hearing aid got knocked out while hugging a friend at BiCon this evening. When I picked it up off the floor it was dead.

GN: I had packed my spare hearing aid so I was able to say to friend it was OK, calmly walk back to my room, chuck a battery in BAHA #2, have a quick 'definitely dead' test on #1 and carry on my BiCon.

And then the bloody fucking second spare starts conking out and DIED on me at 6pm.  Can't get home and back before end of BiCon, really can't hear at all. Am at use laptop and hope stage.  Fucking public fucking transport and total unfair having TWO hearing aids fail on me.

And some GN:

But I really am downright fucking tenacious. My friend fed me tea and we got computers to type conversations while I evaluated my options of travel and then not.  After a few wrong starts and random hideous noises I got the first-broken slightly-less-fucked hearing aid to get internal audio off my laptop and subsequently external room audio off my Sansa Clip MP3 player in record but paused mode

Cue using the sansa clip as an external microphone to hearing aid unit and continuing my socialising with friends. Remarkably good sound quality, slightly dodgy for group conversation buts it's been running for 5 hours if I don't mind hitting the ON button again every 15-20 mins when it turns itself off!  I have a friend willing to lend me his Sansa clip tomorrow so I don't flatten the charge on mine!

GN: We've won tickets to a music festival (Beacons festival in Skipton).

BN: It's this weekend, already have some things planned and kids are with us (well, as usual)

GN: MsCharly and her FWHTBAB would love to go to a festival but can't afford one . . . Well they can now.

Which flavour of engineering or is it a common first year with teh specialisation chosen later?

 for engineering students in general and female ones in particular. The industry is known to be missing out on a substantial talent pool.

It is a general introductory first year (may be first two years) then the chance to specialise in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical or Electronic.

My elder brother did his MSc at H-W.

Is that the stuff made out of those little biscuits that you get with coffee? I tried that too, since I am currently resident in a house of astonishing levels of provisioning. It was like eating biscuits on toast. Apparently they bought it in morrisons.

It is. For full effect, I think I need to try it spread on the caramelised biscuits. Perhaps even make a biscuit and biscuit spread sandwich.

The rest of the day is going to go slow, now, even though it's POETS day.

BN: Between baggage drop and security at MCR I discovered I still had my pen knife in my pocket.
BN: After rushing to T1, discovered the post office was closed so couldn't post it to myself.
GN: Happy look on the shop assistant's face as he became the new owner of my Swiss army knife.

I once accidentally left a Swiss Army knife in hand baggage.

I told the security people they could keep it, or give it away.

They put it in a big orange plastic envelope with a security tag on it, & sent it as checked baggage. I had to collect it at the other end.

That was Bangkok, IIRC.

After a lovely day yesterday, I hope they're not getting too wet today. Our friends are there, avec brollies and wellies. Woolly went with them yesterday and paid more for a single day ticket than they did for the whole event!
