So... sad individual that I am, I decided to satisfy my curiosity about Steve's Marsh Gibbon visits by looking through each and every Strava track this year so far and counting how many times he passed through it.

Hmm. Marsh Gibbon a) has a pub, b) is near enough exactly a 100mi round trip from Swindon, and c) would fill that annoying gap in my Strava heatmap (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=86935.0).

I decided to look at a route to ride from home (Nottingham) to Marsh Gibbon and back to pay homage! It rather conveniently work out at 204 miles - A Full Tommy!!

MG is only 100km from my bit of London. A weekend excursion is definitely possible.

Four days without a Marsh Gibbon visit. The longest Gibbon-free stretch since the run of 5 days up to and including January 20th.

There could well be a few more Gibbon free days coming up too, looking at the weather forecast. There's a couple of days of Northerly winds, and Steve tends to like to ride into the wind in the morning and have a tailwind for the return journey. I expect tomorrow's ride could well be a repeat of today's, or perhaps a trip to Spalding.

Given his direction and destination today, I think a Marsh Gibbon fly-by is pretty much ruled out. If that's the case, this is the longest that will have passed without the relentless red randonneur passing through!

There's lots of flat roads around West Wittering the problem is finding a breach in the South Downs to get there.

Steve arrived back in the vicinity of Milton Keynes needing a few extra miles, so embarked on a loop away from MK.
It appears, though, that he didn't need quite as many miles as a Marsh Gibbon Manoeuvre would entail so we now have a run of 8 Gibbon-free days.
He is still 26 visits ahead of Tarzan and IronOx though.

I think this is another rule that the UMCA missed. No HAMR can be completed without a visit to Marsh Gibbon.

Tarzan has been very close to the Green Swamp Wildlife Management Area today. If that is worthy of its name it will have a thriving colony of Marsh Gibbons making faces at him and sticking thorns in his Vredestein Continentals.
Come to think of it, Tarzan's well-known cry is probably one of frustration at another broken frame, punctured tyre or some such.

I wonder if anybody living in Marsh Gibbon is aware yet of the phenomenon that is the Red Randonneur and the fame that he brings to MG?
Will there be pilgrimages? Do they have a suitable camping field? Can you buy sausages there?

I'm disappointed with the poor research here. Googling of a Marsh Gibbon shows that it's nothing to do with primates, but it's a swan wearing a burglars mask in fetish/bondage gear

Neither, it's as the 'jet plane flies', ie great circle. Thinking of a swinging gibbon triggered some rather dark thoughts along the lines of 50 shades of gibbon.

What would be a useful feature is sample Steve's distance away from Marsh Gibbon every 5 minutes or so
when the spot tracker is active. And average that for every day. And plot a graph with average distance away
from Marsh Gibbon on the y-axis and time of day on the x-axis. Interesting to see if that would turn
out as some type of bell curve. Probably would since most of the time Steve returns home for the night.
But could reveal interesting graphical representation of what direction he usually heads.

One way to resolve this issue of unfortunate ambiguity might be to already now within a mile or so of Marsh Gibbon erect
brown tourist sight signposts stating "Welcome to Marsh Gibbon, Historic Endurance Feat Passage Town". After all those signs
will be in place 50 years from now. This approach seems to be a std way used by England Historic Market Towns to extend their
points of entry to a location well before outskirt houses are passed. So seems UCAM authorities should approve of this amendment.

I was driving from Bristol to Milton Keynes today to drop off some stuff for Steve with Lesley, his Home Support manager.
Driving along the A4421 I saw the Marsh Gibbon sign and decided to to divert and check out the place, I'd just gone past The Red Lion in Stratton Audley when it dawned on me
it did not feel right to drive there.
I've got a DIY route instead that I'll try out in the coming weeks.

For example, have they thought through the impact of cycling-tourism on the area; especially in the snug of the Red Lion.

Each tomato sauce dispenser's radius represents his distance from Marsh Gibbon over a 24 hour period with midnight at the top of each (so the four green petals represent 3am, 9am, 3pm and 9pm clockwise from top-right). A classic 'double Gibbon' can be seen on Jan 9th, an early morning single Gibbon on Feb 21st and a rare quad-Gibbon on Jan 1st.
I wonder if the the MG Women's Institute could arrange to have these printed on a commemorative tea towel.

I've just been trying to see if if it's feasible to go a little off route on the Buckingham Blinder 400 in April to feed at The Plough in Marsh Gibbon.

It's official. Strava confirms that Steve gibbonned this evening. I was driving home from Bicester towards Piddington, must have missed him by seconds!

Would there be an interest in a few Gibbon Time tea towels?
I was wondering whether we could have an auction for, say 5 tea towels ("limited numbered print run; signed by the artist" ;D) where the highest 5 bids get one with 100% of their bid money going to Steve's fund (I'm happy to foot the bill for production costs and postage).
Production costs would work out at around £11 each, so minimum bid would ideally be well in excess of that to make it a worthwhile exercise. If there was demand, I'd be happy to do this every couple of months with a new tea towel each time.
If we did this, I'd probably post one to Steve's address too. The domestic support crew must have to dry up a fair few sausage pans.

As the daylight hours increase and Steve's daily mileages rise, he will presumably be riding further afield and so making fewer Gibbon visits. Alternatively, he might decide to ride multiple local loops and so make frequent passages of MG. As summer days turn to autumn then winter again, his strategy will no doubt change. Maybe - damn the thought! - he will even tire of Marsh Gibbon! The question is, at what point in the year will we see Peak Gibbon?
Please note that a Peak Gibbon is not the same as an Alpine Ape. I know that you know this, yet I am compelled to remind you least someone put their big foot in their mouth.

I googled "Marsh Gibbon" and Abraham to see if the residents were aware yet of their fame. It seems that Mr. Steve is far from the most famous Abraham there. In fact there is a Miss. Abraham who's many accomplishments include "always sitting beautifully on the carpet" and "excellent balancing and racing". Chapeau Miss Abraham, the most famous Abraham in Marsh Gibbon.

Unusually, yesterday I flew via Philadephia which looks to be around 40 miles from Marsh Gibbon Gardens.

How about ringing 4 quarter peals this year to celebrate the Quarter milestones of Steve's cycling year? The first of them would be Tuesday 31st March, just enough time to get 5 Ringers together for a Quarter of Grandsire Doubles.
The Quarter would be dedicated to Steve and his quest and would be forever recorded in the UK's bell ringing records.

I've got a 300k DIY route from Bristol that takes in the Gibbon, not ridden it yet though.
I'll be tantalisingly close in April while riding the Buckingham Blinder, it passes through Stratton Audley which isn't far from MG.

Further to the above; this could be a good week for upping the Gibbon Count, Steve has gained some good road experience over the weekend so should be able to do many loops around Gibbon Land. ;D

Just having a quiet moment and got to thinking Gibbon. What a change from six months ago, such a pity the counting didn't continue. I know it would have been nearly as big an endurance test as the riding, keeping tally. Was the counting ever automated by one of you clever IT types?
I think there have been a few Gibbon's over recent weeks?
