Title: [HAMR] MARSH GIBBON!!
Post by: Oaky on 31 January, 2015, 04:36:53 pm
So... sad individual that I am,  I decided to satisfy my curiosity about Steve's Marsh Gibbon visits by looking through each and every Strava track this year so far and counting how many times he passed through it.

From wikipedia:
Quote
One of the two entries in the Domesday Book for the village is unique in having the only comment of any kind, namely "Graviter et miserabiliter"

Doesn't sound very appealing. But they've opened a pub since then.

Fascinating:

The village name comes from the English word 'marsh', describing the typical state of land in the area due to the high water table of the Aylesbury Vale. The affix 'Gibbon' derives from the family name 'Gibwen', the lords of the manor here in the twelfth century. In manorial rolls of 1292 the village was recorded as Mersh Gibwyne, though earlier (in 1086) it was known simply as Merse.

Hmm. Marsh Gibbon a) has a pub, b) is near enough exactly a 100mi round trip from Swindon, and c) would fill that annoying gap in my Strava heatmap (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=86935.0).

Challenge accepted! (just the once mind, I'm not nuts like Steve)

There could well be a few more Gibbon free days coming up too, looking at the weather forecast. There's a couple of days of Northerly winds, and Steve tends to like to ride into the wind in the morning and have a tailwind for the return journey. I expect tomorrow's ride could well be a repeat of today's, or perhaps a trip to Spalding.

There's lots of flat roads around West Wittering the problem is finding a breach in the South Downs to get there.

Steve arrived back in the vicinity of Milton Keynes needing a few extra miles, so embarked on a loop away from MK.

It appears, though, that he didn't need quite as many miles as a Marsh Gibbon Manoeuvre would entail so we now have a run of 8 Gibbon-free days.

He is still 26 visits ahead of Tarzan and IronOx though.

Tarzan has been very close to the Green Swamp Wildlife Management Area today. If that is worthy of its name it will have a thriving colony of Marsh Gibbons making faces at him and sticking thorns in his Vredestein Continentals.

Come to think of it, Tarzan's well-known cry is probably one of frustration at another broken frame, punctured tyre or some such.

I wonder if anybody living in Marsh Gibbon is aware yet of the phenomenon that is the Red Randonneur and the fame that he brings to MG?

Will there be pilgrimages?   Do they have a suitable camping field?   Can you buy sausages there?

I'm disappointed with the poor research here. Googling of a Marsh Gibbon shows that it's nothing to do with primates, but it's a swan wearing a burglars mask in fetish/bondage gear

Neither, it's as the 'jet plane flies', ie great circle. Thinking of a swinging gibbon triggered some rather dark thoughts along the lines of 50 shades of gibbon.

What would be a useful feature is sample Steve's distance away from Marsh Gibbon every 5 minutes or so
when the spot tracker is active. And average that for every day. And plot a graph with average distance away
from Marsh Gibbon on the y-axis and time of day on the x-axis. Interesting to see if that would turn
out as some type of bell curve. Probably would since most of the time Steve returns home for the night.
But could reveal interesting graphical representation of what direction he usually heads.

Cross-country crows fly along great circles.

Really? I assumed they fly rhumb line routes using a constant bearing from celestial bodies / magnetism. Travelling along a great circle requires either stretching a string between your start and end points, a gnomic chart, some spherical trigonometry or vector maths.

If you check the route for the third passage on streetview, the "Marsh Gibbon" signs at the edge of the village aren't crossed by Steve's actual route.

It's a close enough thing that,  provided we can establish the exact velocity of Marsh Gibbon at the time, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle should render it a valid passage (IMHO).

One way to resolve this issue of unfortunate ambiguity might be to already now within a mile or so of Marsh Gibbon erect
brown tourist sight signposts stating "Welcome to Marsh Gibbon, Historic Endurance Feat Passage Town". After all those signs
will be in place 50 years from now. This approach seems to be a std way used by England Historic Market Towns to extend their
points of entry to a location well before outskirt houses are passed. So seems UCAM authorities should approve of this amendment.

I'm not a great fan of Messrs Garden, Oddie and Brooke-Taylor's 70s antics, but, what with Steve's PBP adventures on a triplet, his Ecky Thump sausage enthusiasm, his daily The Ballad of the Premier OK Tea Rooms tomato sauce showdown and of course his funky Marsh Gibbon visits I just had to make the following...

Each tomato sauce dispenser's radius represents his distance from Marsh Gibbon over a 24 hour period with midnight at the top of each (so the four green petals represent 3am, 9am, 3pm and 9pm clockwise from top-right). A classic 'double Gibbon' can be seen on Jan 9th, an early morning single Gibbon on Feb 21st and a rare quad-Gibbon on Jan 1st.

I wonder if the the MG Women's Institute could arrange to have these printed on a commemorative tea towel.

Where can I buy a tea towel?

I won't be updating this daily, but perhaps another one at the end of the month. And I am quite tempted by taking advantage of this (http://www.bagsoflove.co.uk/products/personalised-tea-towels.aspx).

Aren't there five sepals on a tomato in reality, if we're playing pedant?

Am I being thick? If the top of the tomato is midnight, then surely the petals/sepals as shown are actually at 1:30, 4:30, 7:30 and 10:30. ???

In Marsh Gibbon there’s a signpost and a house to let,
and a cyclist taking photos of the view.
He hopes to see a faster rider passing through.
I think you know who.

At the corner there are two policemen in a motorcar,
Then two ladies walked their dogs across the grass.
And say 'hello' to the man with his bicycle, in the spiting rain,
Very strange.

Marsh Gibbon is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue Buckinghamshire skies.

Strava is the "Gold Standard" - all will be revealed when it is posted. I beleive he has to go beyond the "Welcome to M-G" sign for it to count.
If it's close, a referal to Street view may help the adjudicators.

Would there be an interest in a few Gibbon Time tea towels?

I was wondering whether we could have an auction for, say 5 tea towels ("limited numbered print run; signed by the artist"  ;D) where the highest 5 bids get one with 100% of their bid money going to Steve's fund (I'm happy to foot the bill for production costs and postage).

Production costs would work out at around £11 each, so minimum bid would ideally be well in excess of that to make it a worthwhile exercise. If there was demand, I'd be happy to do this every couple of months with a new tea towel each time.

If we did this, I'd probably post one to Steve's address too. The domestic support crew must have to dry up a fair few sausage pans.

Jo, your idea is so quintessentially British that I fear that the lot on the other side of the pond will simply hoist the white flag when they realise what they are up against.

As the daylight hours increase and Steve's daily mileages rise, he will presumably be riding further afield and so making fewer Gibbon visits. Alternatively, he might decide to ride multiple local loops and so make frequent passages of MG. As summer days turn to autumn then winter again, his strategy will no doubt change. Maybe - damn the thought! - he will even tire of Marsh Gibbon! The question is, at what point in the year will we see Peak Gibbon?

Please note that a Peak Gibbon is not the same as an Alpine Ape. I know that you know this, yet I am compelled to remind you least someone put their big foot in their mouth.

With sausage shaped signs and ketchup red tights
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A primate with L E D lights

Grey slate roofed bus stops of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the creature with the lights on his bike
And he's gone

Gibbons in the marsh with headlights
Gibbons in the marsh with headlights
Gibbons in the marsh with headlights,

Dirty old B road, must you keep rolling, flowing into the night
People so busy, make me feel dizzy, taxi light shines so bright
But I don't, need no friends
As long as I gaze on Marsh Gibbon Sunset, I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time, Marsh Gibbon's sunset's fine.

Teethgrinder's riding, Marsh Gibbon village, every other night
But he is not lazy, he wants to wander, stay on his bike all night
But I don't, feel afraid
As long as I gaze on Marsh Gibbon Sunset, I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time, Marsh Gibbon's sunset's fine.

Millions of people swarming like flies 'round Marsh Gibbon village green
But Teethgrinder crosses over the river where he feels safe and sound

As long as he gazes on Marsh Gibbon Sunset, he is in paradise
Marsh Gibbon's sunset's fine.

I have visions of Steve arranging his route so to pass the 75,065 mile point as he draws into Marsh Gibbon, the streets lined with crowds of yacfers cheering, barbecuing sausages and toasting Marshgibbonsmallows while the residents look on in puzzlement.

Maybe even as the fifth in a record-breaking quinGibbon so he can be cheered through on each of the previous loops.

Time for some Burt Bacharach, I feel.

Do you know the way to Marsh Gibbon
I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way
Do you know the way to Marsh Gibbon
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in Marsh Gibbon

M.K. is a great big freeway
Put a hundred down and buy a bike
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years. How quick they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas

Do you know the way to Marsh Gibbon
They've got a lot of space.
There'll be a place where I can stay
I was born and raised in Marsh Gibbon
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in Marsh Gibbon

Fame and fortune is a magnet
It can pull you far away from home
With a dream in your heart you're never alone
Dreams turn into dust and blow away
And there you are without a friend
You pack your bike and ride away

I've got lots of friends in Marsh Gibbon
Do you know the way to Marsh Gibbon
Can't wait to get back to Marsh Gibbon

Time for some Burt Bacharach, I feel.

Do you know the way to Marsh Gibbon
I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way
Do you know the way to Marsh Gibbon
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in Marsh Gibbon

M.K. is a great big freeway
Put twelve hundred down and buy a bike
In a week, maybe two, they'll call you a dyke.

I googled "Marsh Gibbon" and Abraham to see if the residents were aware yet of their fame. It seems that Mr. Steve is far from the most famous Abraham there. In fact there is a Miss. Abraham who's many accomplishments include "always sitting beautifully on the carpet" and "excellent balancing and racing". Chapeau Miss Abraham, the most famous Abraham in Marsh Gibbon.

Best wishes from the Birmingham Small Arms bicycle works.

You were riding your new Raleigh down the Coventry Road,
When I saw you.
I caught you up, I pushed you off, you fell to the ground,
Then I punched you black and blue.

Now five seconds later on you got my boot in your teeth.
Grinding won’t be easy to do.
But don’t forget it’s me who caused that blood on your brow.
And I can giya flat nose too.

No, I don’t like you.
I can’t believe you’ve got the nerve to ride that bike so near me.
Oh, I don’t like you.
I really don’t like it how you make cycling look so easy.

When you run away you’ll find,
You’ve left your precious bike behind.
You’d better let me keep it or you will be sorry.

Don’t ride round here, matey.
Don’t ride round here, nohhh.
Don’t ride round here, matey.
Don’t ride round here, nohhh.

I was riding my new Raleigh down the A forty five,
That much is true,
But even then I saw you chasing over my arm,
And I easily sprinted away from you.

These eleven thousand miles have been such good times,
I still l**e you,  :-*

But even so I think I’ll ride my bike on my own.
I think that’s now what I must do.

Day 74: A scheduled visit to Humberside and a sustained period of nor'easterley winds mean that Steve remains one Gibbon short of his 40.  Kurt's visit to England AR, failed to yield any boggy simians and so William and Kurt are still neck and neck on bugger all Gibbons.  They are now 39 and 37 Gibbons respectively behind Steve on a day for day comparison.

Interesting stats, but really useful only if we know the equivalent information about Tommy Godwin and his encounters with Marsh Gibbon.

BTW I'm at home decorating this week so if it looks from the tracker that Steve will passing through MG I may nip over there to get a photo of him in transit.

Ian Hislop has previous with Marsh Gibbon:

"Hislop (Ian Hislop, editor of private eye and veteran of Have I got News for You) was a violently aggressive, indiscriminate slogger, who for ever endeared himself to the team one day at the bizarrely named village of Marsh Gibbon.  He vaulted a fence to retrieve a six-hit, only to discover that the dried mud surface on to which he had jumped was in fact a thin crust covering a deep pool of liquid cowshit.”

Calling Bell Ringers  There must be quite a few bell ringing cyclists out there.  I've just checked if Marsh Gibbon has a Ring of Bells, they do, a ring of 5 at St. Mary the Virgin Church.

How about ringing 4 quarter peals this year to celebrate the Quarter milestones of Steve's cycling year?  The first of them would be Tuesday 31st March, just enough time to get 5 Ringers together for a Quarter of Grandsire Doubles.

The Quarter would be dedicated to Steve and his quest and would be forever recorded in the UK's bell ringing records.

The answer is; we have two, you two.  I'm away in Yorkshire on the 31st so can't do this one, would love to ride down and do 30th June. Should we start a separate thread to try and get another three?

And in other news , the British Geological Survey is investigating the formation of a new fault in the earth's crust in Buckinghamshire.  A spokesperson said:

"It's really odd. A new circular fault line just appeared, centred on some village or other. It must be caused by aliens with their laser beams. Either that or a bloke just riding round and round Marsh Gibbon on a bike, but that's simply not feasible."

I traced the track for yesterday on Strava and think it was a Gibbon record. I made it 12. Is that a record for Gibbon in a day?

Just dipped into this thread again to check if the early May Double was on the tally, it is but the columns have got screwed up.  I can't cope with this 'untidiness'  :D  Oaky, Please would you correct the situation asap.

Further to the above; this could be a good week for upping the Gibbon Count, Steve has gained some good road experience over the weekend so should be able to do many loops around Gibbon Land.  ;D

Just having a quiet moment and got to thinking Gibbon.  What a change from six months ago, such a pity the counting didn't continue.  I know it would have been nearly as big an endurance test as the riding, keeping tally.  Was the counting ever automated by one of you clever IT types?

I think there have been a few Gibbon's over recent weeks?
