I really want to do this. I would have done it last year but was in the States at the time. I just need to join a club to get the membership.

I'm tempted.  I bombed out in 2008 through lack of fitness, but I could quite fancy this year.  I need to get some other TTs under my belt so my entry form doesn't look so empty, not to mention joining a club.

There's no other time to ride it.

Interestingly, the new handbook lists 'SC', special entry conditions, see official entry form. That wasn't in the 2009 listing. Is Blackburnrod around?

Good news; eck seems to think I might be interested - but I'd never meet a condition, special or otherwise

I will be at the start and finish and points in between.I know nothing of any special conditions, but suggest you contact the organiser.I suspect they refer to allowing the organiser to accept entries from persons whose entry form might not have a previous 24hr performance but would be a desirable rider by virtue of good performances at other distances eg. when L.Armstrongs entry arrives.

I rode last year, on tandem with McNasty. I had no "previous", so I guess they must have deemed McNasty to be a "desirable rider".  ??? :-X
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Does one have to have other 24s in the bag to enter the MR 24 ? or did one ?

In the absence of a previous 12 or 24 hour TT I think evidence of a 300km (or longer obviously) Audax would be good enough if they really are worried about unknown people entering. That, at least, sets you apart from someone who's ridden a few 10s and enters a 24 as a drunken bet. Speed isn't really that important on a 24 (compared to a 100 mile TT), but stamina/longevity is.

Otherwise it's a bit of a Catch-22 requiring a previous 24 since the Mersey Roads 24 has been the only 24 hour TT in the UK in the last *mumble* years.

That would be a fine Catch-22. I had no previous. I imagine that entry criteria would be applied more strictly according to the numbers.

Last year I got in on the basis of indifferent 25 and 50 times, having come back to TTing after a break of around fifteen years.

Edit: there was no provision on the entry form for recording non-competitive events.

When I entered the 2002 Mersey Roads, I'd not previously ridden any TTs in Britain.  After the MR, I rode 12 hr, 100 mile and 50 mile TTs, in that order.  At least the distance kept halving...  A pity if you couldn't do the same thing nowadays.

There are plenty of other 24 hr TTs around the place but not in Britain.  I don't know if the CTT recognises non-CTT results.  Isn't there another British 24 planned in the next couple of years?

I think I only had a 10 PB on my form. It looked rather empty so I mentioned some 300+ miles Audaxes I'd done.

Probably gave the org a laugh ...

(I also managed a couple of 25mile shakedown events before July; i doubt these had any effect on my 24 performance.)

I seriously doubt that anyone would be turned down. Mersey Roads struggle to run the events and some are trying to stop it from being run. More riders means that there is less justification for not running it. The more the merrier. If you've ever ridden a 24, you'll probably have an idea how much of a big deal it is to run a 24hour TT.
I entered my first 24, the Mersey Roads National Championship, with a blank entry form. The North Road 24 was also ran that year, so considering I was a novice with no obvious form entering a National Championship event, I'd say they'd let almost anyone ride. It's not uncommon for riders to not even manage 300 miles, so don't be put off entering. In fact, you'd probably be doing us a favour by entering.

There will be a 24 hour in Southern England in 2011 as well as the Mersey Roads 24. I think it will be organised by the Brighton Mitre. Unless something bad has happened to prevent it being run and I don't know about it.

Isn't the 'SC' just because it's a championship and therefore it has an earlier closing date for entries than a standard open time trial?

Not sure why there wasn't an'SC' last year as there normally is for any championship TT.

I am pretty sure there are no preconditions to enter MR 24 other than having your brain removed first. Good thing to do at least once in your life but maybe only once. Quite a few Audax riders do it without support and I take my hat off to them. I rode it with support in 1993? and 2008 and doubt I will do it again. Getting to the finishing circuit gives you a great high and the support from all the people around the circuit almost allows you to forget the pain. I will probably be marshalling this year.

It feels a bit wrong filling in the form when your last tt was a rather sluggish club '10', I didn't need to explain my 'previous' as a long distance tortoise, though.
I want to get a club team together this year, some might be interested as they are aiming, long term, at mtb enduro events. No takers as yet, may need to administer more BEER .
I rode two years ago, unsupported (except from some very welcome tlc from Annie, formerly of this parish) and treated it as a randonnee. If you do a lot of miles, it makes for a 'fun' experience to go fast and unencumbered for a change. [I/we will have support this year.]

In my old club there was a wily vet who specialised in 12s and 24s. He wrote a piece in the club newsletter about his antics, whereupon he revealed he'd started wearing a helmet, but only because he'd woken up sprawled in a ditch once too many times.

Have just been reading John Taylor's excellent book on the 24 hour TT whilst trying to shake off the flu bug.

A highly recommended read for anyone considering riding a 24 hour with lots of Audax riders making up a good percentage of the field (especially in PBP years)

Have recently joined a racing club again for the first time in xx years to ride this classic event.

After reading about it, I am hooked

Bridgetown Cycles in Cannock (just off Walkmill Road, off the A5)
Costs about £30, but is very densely packed and a big ol' book.

When is it? - July but when??

July 24th and 25th this year.
