HP it is.

Those of more mature years may remember Marty Feldman doing a sketch as a Charles Aznavour style singer with the song "La sauce HP" in a heavy French accent.   It might be on YouTube somewhere if you look?

In the days when television actively took the piss out of anyone outside the Home Counties, Clement Freud interviewed two middle aged 'Northern Ladies' (Thora Hird/Nellie Pledge lookalikes with bat-wing specs and head scarves).

CF          "What will you be cooking for dinner?"
1st NL     "We've had our dinner. We've bought chicken for tea."
CF          "How will you serve it?"
2nd NL    "Boil it."  :o
CF          "With a nice sauce...?"
1st NL     "HP!"

I'm paraphrasing. You might even find it on the tube BICBA to look.

Although HP is the One True Sauce, having a wooden pallette has its advantages. The generic stuff has sufficient vinegary bite that, on a local caff spam'n'egg, it tastes just as good...

HP for me usually.

When I was in Ireland in the summer they had a brown sauce called YR, which apparently stood for "Yorkshire Relish". I wonder if Henderson's know about them?

Mrs B bought 'Brown Sauce' this week.
"HP?" I inquired.
"No.  The HP was in a plastic bottle so I had to buy Cross & Blackwell"

Points for Mrs B for eschewing yet more bloody plastic,  but disqualified for buying ' fruity'

Often it's Sainsbury's. I'm just grateful to have brown sauce and not ketchup ;D

Clearly I'm not a connoisseur.

My mistake.  It's not Cross & Blackwell, it's Branston.

They're all foul gloop.

Anyone who asks for brown (or tomato) sauce in a decent restaurant should be thrown out with extreme prejudice.

Well yes, but you've got to have something on your bacon roll from the local caff/greasy spoon/van

IRTA a sort of lead hydride.  Which probably tastes better than brown sauce.
