Just look at the stays on that!
« on: 23 February, 2009, 09:27:45 am »
Or rather... 'stay'. Got the Sunbeam stripped down finally. The seatstays are detachable, and the right side chainstay is contained within the chainbath. All terribly ingenious, and taking it apart just made me realise again how well these old bikes were put together.

[rose tint]Just don't get quality like that anymore[/rose tint]

Pic aint the clearest, but it's all I got

And I just love the little odometer

God!! Am I that old I can remember them  ::-)

I have used them on quite a few of my bikes over the year, a nice little ticking noise as you clock up your miles :)

My neighbour has an old Sunbeam circa 1912 (the bike, not the neighbour). It has no chainstay on the right, just a rather solid chain guard / bath. It also has a two speed drive inside the chainset (there is nothing new about a Schlumpf Mountain Drive), and a back pedal brake. It also has a 27" frame!

That's a rather beautiful odometer. Never seen one as fancy as that. I sued to have one back in the 70s but it was very plain.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Have you rebuilt the hub yet?

I had an odometer like that - or more than one. Might still have it somewhere. Although I'd never heard the word "odometer" then. They were always "milometers".

Reminds me of a piece of THIS. Be careful what you do with it, just in case.

I remember the old-fashioned heart monitors that looked a little like that.
