Is there similar research for huge bellies?  :-[

"Fat buggers live longer" is never going to be a headline, I suspect.

Or does it just feel that way, cramming so much into one night every year?

Unfortunately, big bellies can be genuine Bad News in health terms.
Belly fat is Bad, Hip & Thigh Fat is good - or less bad - seem to be the message.

Do I remember reading somewhere that 'pear' shaped is generally healthier than 'apple' shaped?  I think it was something to do with there being a reasonably direct correlation between the amount of belly lard you were carrying and the amount of lard lingering on various internal organs.

But what if you have thunder-thighs and a belly?

The waist to hip ratio can be helpful. 0.7 is good, 0.9 is bad for women, anything over 1 is Definitely Bad for men.

Sadly I was about half an inch short, which isn't bad for someone with around a 30/32ish waist.

It's made my thighs stronger - but not sure they're bigger, because I've lost a fair bit of body fat at the same time.

I have a waist:hip ratio of 0.9 also.

I've been the owner of 28.5" thighs, while sporting a 30" waist. None of that applies to me.

How do you get trousers to fit?
Giraffe has muscular thighs and a larger waist than yours but difficulty buying suitable clothes...

You have to go one or two sizes up and use the belt to hold them up.

I had to take a pair of 32" 3/4 length shorts back today as they would not do up, I havent gained a beer belly recently but I have been riding a fixed gear. Most trousers just don't offer a big enough "seat" for cycling legs.

Easy, my thighs are now a normal 24".

For years though I could only wear baggy gym bottoms and had a John Wayne gait.  ;D

Does 60 cm seem not seem an impossibly high thigh circumference for average slim/med build Joe even if they are getting reasonable amount of exercise.

My thighs are ~56 cm and I can't see them getting any chunkier.

I suspect like many things it doesn't work so well at the edges of the bell curve where people like you and me live.  If they are talking muscle mass then if we have low body fat means it distorts the situation a bit.

Not wishing to sound uncharitable but are you both what could be described as "ectomorphs"?

As I am afraid that puts you just outside the "normal" range of body types, low muscle mass and body fat, small build perhaps?

60cm is not that exceptional.

Oh, the thigh! I thought you were talking about measuring the quads just above the knee :demon:

Indeed 60cm isn't exceptional, I'm not far off it but I reckon I have skinny thighs.

It is measured just below the buttock so having no backside will be a factor as well.
