A canal-based commute is usually good for a bit of random. Today:

And that was yesterday? You've clearly got a lot more ice/lower temperatures than here, thus proving that Birmingham is in The North. More interestingly, you've got ironing witches. Now that is a curious phenomenon!

It's more a case of having clear skies while everyone else was having a snowpocalypse.  Hence more frozen canals than Venice.  (We did finally get some belated snow, but it wasn't as impressive as the stuff we had in December.)

Probably fell off their broomstick in icy conditions on the way to an extreme ironing competition.  I blame the austerity gritting.

Yes, yesterday and yes, the temperatures have quite possibly been colder up here than in The Tropical South. However, the canals have various microclimates of their own though, so they're not very representative - especially if they're in a deep cut and don't get much sun! The roads and pavements were free from ice elsewhere on that commute, with noticeably less ice on the canals by the return journey. Except for in the cold bits where the witches hang out.

On Monday I was walking around in short sleeves! (Still had my woolly hat on though!)

Good job the canal wasn't frozen over when you had, or didn't have, your hospital appointment!

The Birmingham Main Line had ice on it, but thankfully the Tame Valley didn't.

Well...................not been out on the ol' velocipede for 10 days + , so wasn't expecting much of an eventful ride in this morning. About 2 miles in, I went a slightly different way to normal, .............................and saw this......................

Hmm! me thinks , a useful  empty drill case, , I can use that for something....... ;D  better go back and have a look.

Blimey ,..........................thats heavy.............................. ;D ;D,    better open iit up then..... ;D

OOooooooo :o :o :o :o :o ;D,.......''I'll 'ave that', ah but prob doesn't work, but you never know.

So carried it home on the bike,  one handed, which was a tad difficile,as it was heavy.

Complete with all the unused (bar one)  drill bits,   works well , this one, it does.

I'm now  getting a bit worried,as I'm finding bigger things tan I used too.  There will come a point where I will have to 'hide' my find,  for later vehicular retrieval.

I'm riding 20m in front of you from now on.

You know those yellow and black striped pencils we had in the 80s?  One of those.  Well-chewed so, again, I didn't stop.

Want an unchewed and new one?

It's a celebration of international Women's day: a witch's hat overlooking an iron that has been symbolically discarded.

Or a failed attempt to thaw the ice.

Or a failed attempt to thaw the ice.
Which failed due to the lack of electric power points on the canal bank.

Neither iron nor hat were there today (as far as I could see) but there's still a fair amount of ice, albeit very broken up and patchy. And a coconut. Two if you count the other one on the other canal too. Sign of Spring?

Sign of rampaging Pythons more like.

Obviously,......its a discarded iron, following the purchase of a new one, based on reviews in the Which(??) report.

After several years on yacf, I'm struggling to believe that this is the first time I've stumbled upon this thread.  I've just read it from start to finish.  This is truly what the internet was made for.  Blodders, you are an inspiration!

So a quick check, is skip diving allowed?

Re: 'found this on a ride today'!

Strictly speaking skip diving is theft, but since it's all destined for waste disposal unilkely to be challenged.

I asked before going in to the skip, sonot theft.  Wondering if it counts on this thread.

The simple question is, did you find whatever it was that you dived into a skip for whilst on a ride?  If yes then post.  If no, still post but expect some banter as a result.   ;)
