Belgian Letter Boxes
« on: 14 July, 2013, 08:55:04 pm »
While riding home from Russia last week, I amused myself in Belgium by photographing as many types of letter box as I could find. The postal service in Belgium only delivers as far as the boundary of your property, not the front door as in the UK, so if you have a front garden, you'll need a letter box next to your front gate. There are several styles, as I discovered.

First of all, brutalist mid 20th-century concrete:

Not to be confused with a slightly more elegant but nevertheless square utilitarian design:

Then there are Atomium-inspired stainless steel examples of varying shininess:

or simple Flemish brickwork

One of the most popular is a Victorian/Edwardian/pre-war cast-iron job, which can personalised by painting it a distinctive colour (especially if that colour is green)

or leaving it au naturel

Very often such a letter box appears to be older than the house.

This one loses some of its charm through the crude attachment of a pipe for delivering newspapers.

If you don't have a front garden, a simple wall-mounted box will suffice

But if you have a simple letter box, don't over compensate.
"I may only have a tiny letter box, BUT LOOK AT THE SIZE OF MY WINDMILL!"

Then there are the whimsical (verging on the downright quirky)

But my favourite was probably this bird (or is it a fish?), which serves a house on the other side of the canal. Whoever lives there has to row across the canal to collect the mail.

It's funny how so many of them lean to the left.  ;)

Coincidentally, I took a photo of a Belgian post box a week or so ago:

Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

I think Salvatore's right leg may be shorter than his left... ;D

There was a very strong wind that day.

I guess it wasn't Friday! That's rather a fancy post box, very nice.

I'd love to see the bottle of beer that first one was built to open.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

This is a fail on the "I like a dry newspaper" front.

Of course this year's 101-day trip the length of Scandinavia to the Artic Circle (and back via the Baltic States) was really just a front - the trip allowed me to travel the length of Belgium twice, and spot further examples of quirky postboxes.

Most of these are on the dead-straight road between Heist op den Berg and Mechelen.

Barrels and logs are popular in those parts

but the real speciality is to incorporate your letter box into a sculpture

Madam!

But I can't help wondering whether a rookie postman ever reached this property and wondered into which of the sculptures he was supposed to deposit the post

Someone in Putte had decorated their letter box like a wedding cake

This one looks familiar. Inspired by the Futurama character Bender, possibly?

American style near Mechelen

Despite the background no. 54 is a dairy farm. The evidence was all over the road.

In Geel, architect Ludo Wouters has his correspondence delivered to this creation. Would you let someone who designed this letterbox design your new house?

I noticed several of these tubes in France (just E of Dieppe) last week, but they were longer, narrower, and had tight-fitting caps on the ends. It wasn't until I followed a baker's van through a boulangerie-free village and observed the comings and goings of the delivery man that I realised they were for 'posting' baguettes.

The Finns and Swedes are not a patch on the Belgians, but a few individuals make a bit of an effort

Finland:

Meanwhile, Denmark and Poland should buck their ideas up
