The ending is brilliant, though.

At this cold & miserable time of year some cycling in the sun would be a nice tonic!

I know he is possessed of MAD SKILLZTM but am I alone in being slightly worried that the never-ending search for greater and greater 'thrills' and ever more 'radical' shots for the GoPro can only end one way . . . ?

I don't think so, people have been doing stupid stuff before the invention of GoPro and Youtube. Just less people got to see it.

You used to have to send off for a VHS of the latest bmx/skateboard/mountain bike skillz video from magazines. Now it's instant access.

Didn't Joe Simpson's first broken leg come from leaping down six steps on his trike when he was a kid, after being challenged by his sister to try it?

Whatever, MacAskill's stuff is now so smooth that it looks more like CGI, and as such unsurprising.

Martyn Ashton (He of Macaskill type skills but using a road bike) is now wheelchair-bound after breaking his back in a stunt.

Whenever I've watched clips of climbers, base jumpers, general mad fuckers on YouTube and then Googled the individuals, they are generally now dead.

I suppose Danny could always suffer the same sort of accident that Martyn did, it's just that in this video, it looks like a mistake could only lead to death. Or maybe it was just the camera angle etc that made it look like he had massive drops up on those roof tops? Or maybe there was some kind of safety kit out of shot?
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Martyn Ashton's accident was a relatively innocuous 3 metre fall. Had Danny Macaskill had a similar slip on those rooftops his fate would have been much, much worse . . .

I think he's a pretty canny lad, not to mention very skillful. He has had injuries, and I think takes the risks pretty seriously. I'm sure they'll have assessed each shot, and (without wishing to underplay what he's doing), in general the moves with the greater chance of going wrong don't get mixed up with those performed in the more exposed locations.

Following viewing this I did also find another film of his called Drop & Roll, which is quite different. He does a knee-slide in that, while the bike goes under the 'stage', and then rejoins the bike afterwards. That's at the other end of the scale - relatively low peril, but a high chance of going wrong. In fact, from the making-of film that is also available, it appears that he only nails that for the first time after about 7 hours and on take 288.

Years ago I made the same observation about (the increasingly commercialised) adventure racing scene. It wasn't that long before the first death on an event. There was a change in attitude towards the use of wild spaces, which to some extent obscured the risks inherent in the activities, I think.

Yesterday on Twitter, Red Bull posted a video of two aircraft being flown in close proximity, at an altitude of 1 metre, through a hangar at  180mph.

This is stuff that would get your pilot's licence shredded instantly. To me it is no longer entertainment.

JUST FUCKING STUPID.

That stunt was probably less risky than what MacAskill did in his video.

I have to agree, I was a bit "Ho hum, another crayzee Danny MacAskill video", the final stunt notwithstanding, which is brilliant.

The trouble is, it all feels like a vehicle for product placement now, and the cheeky inventiveness has gone.  That's why I still prefer to watch his original video, the one shot in Edinburgh with all the trees and stairs and railings.  Sure, the picture quality is pretty poor compared with the latest tech, the camerawork is a bit wobbly and gritty, but there's a pre-sponsorship-deal honesty to it.
