Is anyone else planning to go across to the Prince of Wales tomorrow?  If so, I'll be heading off from Witham station around 19:15, looking to arrive in Stow Maries around 20:15 or so.

If nobody else is going, I may head off to the Compasses instead to meet any of the "Compasses Cycling Club" chaps who have stayed on in the pub after their ride.  I have it on good authority, that if I twist his arm, chief may hang around there after the ride ;)

I'll be staying in, as I'm off early on Fri for a couple of days [well, back Sat pm akshully] on our Easter Arrow, which will use up all my 'man points'.
I noted the Compasses Club inaugural ride, but I'll have to try and fit their jaunts at some future date.

Have fun on the Arrow -- I'd forgotten about that.

Given the turnout,  the wind/rain that's on the cards for tonight,  the clashing Compasses ride and the fact I couldn't motivate myself to pack all my cycling gear into my work bag before bed yesterday ::-), I'm going to bail on tonight.  :'(

You pussy.

By the way, I'm rather taken with the Easter Arrow. Next year we might have to enter a team. Why's it called the Easter Arrow?

Because it's an Arrow, held at Easter.

OD - there are fleches (arrows) around the Audax world where teams start anywhere and fly (ride?) like arrows to the same target end point.  In Australia we had the Fleche Opperman 2 weeks ago.  Th RUSA website explains it pretty well (the French started it with the Fleche Velocio):

flèche vélocio   (flesh veh low chi o) - A team ride of 24-hours' duration, usually held over the Easter weekend. Very well attended in France, they are becoming increasingly popular among American randonneurs. A team may consist of three to five machines (a tandem counts as a single machine) and at least three machines must finish together to receive official credit. Each team must choose its own route and may not ride with any other cyclists. A minimum of 360 kilometers must be covered inside 24 hours, with no less than 25 kilometers to be ridden in the final two hours. Flèche routes are point-to-point or a large circuit since any particular stretch of road may be used only once during the event by the team. In French, flèche means "arrow", so the traditional method is to ride from one point to another, like an arrow flying into the bullseye. In France a multitude of flèche teams, having left from various cities and villages, will converge 24 hours later on the bullseye, which is the traditional Easter cycling rally in Provence. (Note there are other events in France with this name as well, eg. the Flèches de France, which are not the same sort of event.

I knew somebody actually helpful would be along to explain properly :)

BTW, it turns out that chief decided against the Compasses ride in the end.  I know this because we accidentally  ::-) went to a beer festival instead.  ;D

I'd already bailed out, and chief twisted my arm to hop off the train in Chelmsford.

we had a few in the Plough, which has an impressive enough range of ales.  Then we moved on to the White Horse which was running it's own beer festival in honour of CAMRA cask ale week

Then on for a curry.

I did ride home though! From Witham station

*shufflesfeet*  O:-)

It was always going to be tight to get home, de-suite, faff and then get back on the bike to get to the Compasses.  That timing got even tighter when the trains played up.  So in the interest of the MEMWNS I called Oaky, twisted his arm [a little] and had a pint with him  :-*

The beer festival was a lucky but fantastic find, in-fact, Oaky was so pleased he RAN back to Chelmsford station to use the cash point so as to help pay for their delicacies on offer

Crossed paths with chief this morning, while dropping my bike off at Chelmsford.

We should be setting off around 7pm, going via chief's place so he can change into cycling gear, then onwards to the pubbe.

We were/are wavering on location though, seeing as it's just the two of us, we might bail out and go to the Square and Compasses for a portion of Vic's mahoosive lasagne instead.   I'll give it a couple of hours and give chief a bell to see how he's leaning then...

I just took a spirit level to chief, and he's leaning towards the Square and Compasses.

It's not usually like him to turn down a curry  :o (but in his defence we did have one last night  ;D).

Jalsa Ghar will be saved for another occasion then.

A first:  home before 11pm!

We started out with chief's commute/time-trial up Broomfield road out of Chelmsford, with a brief stop at his place to allow him to change out of work clothes into something more suited to cycling.

A quick pit stop in Littley Green was decided upon, to try and catch Joss and any other cyclists on their Wednesday night ride as they arrived.   We just overlapped with them (three altogether) as we were leaving, two pints of Wherry later.

Then on to the Square and Compasses for dinner a few Stoker's Ales and a Dark Star.

Just under 19 miles by the time I got home.  Lovely night for it -- I feel very much better for getting out on the bike.

Now I just have to try and resist going back tomorrow night to sample other parts of the menu (I'm really tempted to make two of their starters be tomorrow night's meal --- beef carpaccio and something based around a pigeon breast, IIRC).  Also needing to be resisted tomorrow is the Maldon Beer festival.

The S&C pigeon is well worth trying. It claims to be locally shot which I take to mean that Vic leans out of his bedroom window with a big gun.

I can come out to play this Wednesday.  Where shall we go?

Back in the mists of time we volunteered TOKaMaK and bobb to entertain us though I appreciate that His bobbness might still be unable to ride.  Any ideas chaps?  If not that's fine, I'm sure we can come up with another cunning plan.  By the way, I fancy cranking up the distance, perhaps 30 to 40 miles?
