Babbage Engine Mathematics

The NHSnet Difference Engine is having a strange time of it.

I have a small inbox.  It's just the way it is.

Five minutes ago, I got another email, and it came up with an error message saying I was using

95% of capacity, and had 9.8MB left

So I deleted a small slack handful of emails from today, including a couple iwth attachments.  And I remembered to delete them from the Trash file.  Nothing came in in the meantime.

So no, I have

95% of capacity,and have 9.51MB left

Eh? ???

It's OK.  It's had a rethink, and decided that, after I've deleted a couple more, I have

95% of capacity; 9.9MB left

If this is Exchange their is an option somewhere to compact your folders. Basically with Exchange the mails are stored within binary files rather than as a separate text file for each email. As you get more emails the container file grows in size. When you delete an email it doesn't always shrink the size of the container file that it was in. The compact option reduces the size of the container file so that it is just big enough to hold the emails in it.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

We're in transition to Exchange, so it may or may not be.

Delete some crap, you hoarding squirrel!   ;)
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

My mail directory is 5.1GB containing all of my email since 1997. (I lost my '91-'97 archive in a HDD crash and a corresponding act of stupidity with the backup).

All of this is possible because I use Thunderbird and not Outlook.

Nice but you don't get much choice in a corporate environment.

I currently have to use Lotus Notes at work, but that doesn't stop me periodically archiving out the emails and adding them to my personal archive.

You'll need to log in to the nhs.net portal. From your inbox view, select the (Organise) link next to your personal folder list. This will give you a view of how many mails each of your folders contain.

My guess is that you have lots in your sent mails folder.

Sadly, our sent mail folder contains only the last month's :o

If it had more, I would have been overlimit already, but I would have been able to sort someone out proper last week.  Blast!
