Not sure whether this fits better on the silly or sensible signs thread. All I know is that you are in trouble if your fuel tank is empty!

Given that these facilities might be used by 'merry' people, surely the architects/designers could have used something that looks completely different?

It's a hole that's just narrower than the wheel-span of a guided bus. Here's one on the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway:

Evidently the Dutch are more familiar with their social dances. And faced with a Silly Sustrans Gate, the bike limbo might be more useful!
