Title: Pippa and Adamski go global (and are tyredandhungry - well I am)
Post by: Pippa on 14 January, 2016, 07:25:37 am
Most of you are already aware of our current whereabouts and plans. But this seems an appropriate location to put other bits and bobs.

Here is my report from today:
https://tyredandhungry.wordpress.com/2016/01/14/tales-of-the-unexpected/ (https://tyredandhungry.wordpress.com/2016/01/14/tales-of-the-unexpected/)

We are blogging on the same site so do follow that for progress. We will dip in here now and again too.

First proper day of cycling and camping tomorrow  :o

It is absolutely chucking it down here (Geraldine). There may be a small break in the rain this afternoon at which point we will make a 30km dash down the road to pleasant point where we should have the option of a cabin or camping. We shall see. Looking at the forecast once we get there we will be stuck there until Wednesday.

In other news, we found our bike lock keys at the bottom of a pannier  We left the bike lock in Christchurch and bought a new one

Just read that it is part of the event that started in 2010, still going. We felt some of the aftershocks in Oct. 2010, I think about 5.4.

Our time in NZ is now coming to an end and we fly to Melbourne tomorrow for stage 2 of our trip.

We are currently relaxing with friends near Auckland and will pack up the bikes today for the flight tomorrow. We've both had to replace our rear tyres as they were completely destroyed here over nearly 2000 miles. Then we will spend Easter with more friends in Melbourne, before setting off along the coast after Easter aiming for Brisbane by early June (we have a flight to catch from there so this is not a flexible target!).

Sad to be leaving the fabulous people we have met along the way in NZ (Kiwi hospitality is bloody amazing), not sad to be saying goodbye to some of the driving we've seen. A bit apprehensive about Australia; possibly the fear of the unknown and change, but also the known (snakes and spiders coupled with camping - eeep).

We've now been in Aus 3 weeks. We spent about a week in Melbourne with friends and then started cycling 2 weeks ago. We crossed the state border from Victoria into NSW today and tonight we are in Bombala up in the hills inland. We haven't come a direct route, taking 910km to get here, rather than about 500km.....bonus kms means more cake. Yay! We will head back down to the NSW coast tomorrow.

We've seen some pretty massive spiders so far (but only "fluffy" huntsmen  :o ) and a few shedded snake skins at the side of the road. We saw Koalas on Raymond Island. Plenty of roadkill kangaroos and wombats (they're stocky things aren't they!). Bombala is known for Platypi (or Platypus's?) but apparently they are probably hibernating now :(

The cycling here has been great - courteous drivers and mostly quiet roads so far.

We're in Byron Bay. On Thursday we'll be in Queensland and will spend a long weekend on the Gold Coast. Then it's two short days up to Brisbane and our cycling in Oz will be over. It's been bloody brilliant and IMO far better than NZ.

Here's what we've covered: https://goo.gl/rNgUch

After 2,855 km we're now completed the Australian part of our tour (although we don't fly to Canada until Friday). It's been boomin' fantastic.  Before we left the UK I was excited about cycling in New Zealand but I've much preferred the riding in Australia.  There's been lots of small roads to explore, we've experienced autumn in the hinterland hills, seen loads massive golden beaches, visited lovely international cities (Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane), I've done ParkRuns every Saturday, we've interacted with some many friendly people, had loads of positive WarmShower experiences and improved our suntan.  Pretty much everything has been great, and we haven't even seen an alive snake.

Here's our route (click for more details)

Needed. A bike shop in Vancouver that'll build Pippa some wheels. We tried a shop in Brisbane but a week later they've not had the spokes (or rims?) delivered and we fly in 18 hours to Canada.

No particular recommendation, but Vancouver is a very bicycle-friendly place, so finding out a decent bike shop will not be a problem.

Yes, lots of decent bike shops in Vancouver. I've asked a couple of PBP ancien friends living on Vancouver Island for good suggestions.

I'm baffled how that route can be better than New Zealand, but each to their own.
Having ridden both, give me NZ anytime.

When in Australian we didn't get run off the road every day by the local drivers, tourists in campervans and mental logging lorries. Unlike New Zealand where the roads are horrific.

I hope Vancouver is working out well for you. I'm planning a visit to Yellow Jersey Ipswich on Thursday where I will let them know how disappointed I am that they didn't deliver for you!  All the best for a great time in Canada.

We've just ridden down the amazing Icefields Parkway that goes from Jasper to Lake Louise through the Rockies & over two 2,000+ m passes.  Incredible scenery, great hostel, fantastic ride: https://tyredandhungry.wordpress.com/2016/07/04/icefields-parkway-take-my-breath-away/

Some of you may know Kym Raffelt from Brisbane. We've been riding with his son for the past few days.

Here's where we went during those 2,200km we rode in Canada. It's been the best part of the trip so far.

We've had a couple of weeks off the bikes, taking in some of San Fran, meeting up with Phil, having a BBQ with the Things and Phil, going to Napa, going to Lake Tahoe and hiking, sleeping in normal beds, cooking in a normal kitchen.

We're getting back on the bikes today, which will be tough after 2 weeks off. We have some company today with Thing2, yay. Just a mere 500 or so miles down to LA, which should take about 2 weeks at our current slow pace. From there we will do a road trip to the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Monument and we will also go to Vegas (baby!) to stay in a pyramid and drink cocktails by a pool as a complete contrast to the last 8 months before returning home in early October.

I cannot believe we will be home in less than a month  :o

We left the Bay area six days ago and had a great ride with Thing 2. Since then it's not been good - too much fog, skank campsites and horrific driving. We're now in San Luis Obispo and need to get to LA but we may by done with cycling. We've got a rest day tomorrow and need to weigh up the options of cycling some or all the way to LA VS. train VS. hire car.....

It's the end. Tonight we fly home from LAX after a two week roadtrip around south-west USA including five nights in Vegas. The bikes are ready for their trip on another aeroplane.

Yes, we'll have a drink at LAX and on the fight. Oh that's not what you meant..... Eh, dunno.

No, we're not riding from LHR. By the time we're off the flight and built up the bikes it would be rush hour and getting dark.
