Fastest Speeds
« on: 20 March, 2009, 08:12:25 pm »
What's the fastest you've clocked on a bike ?

I managed a new maximum today as part of a very hard and very hilly climb in the mountains to the south of Abu Dhabi. About 2000 metres of climbing in 100km.

But on the descent of one mountain (later to be an ascent from hell) I got up to 87.7 km/h which frightens me even to think about it now.

The fastest I have actually managed is 51mph riding down Montgomery Pass in NV/CA.

 :D

The fastest I have ever recorded was 293mph, whilst sitting at my desk with the bike locked up outside.

A bit faster - 57 mph, I seem to recall.

On gears down a hill in Bristol 52mph

On fixed varies with the gear size but the memorable one is 41mph on a 67.5" gear @ 205 rpm  :D

55mph, descending into Death Valley. It didn't feel very fast on a very wide, long straight desert road.

45mph on fixed with 53/17 on a few occasions.

Just think, Chris Hoy can do that sort of speed on the flat!

I dont think I've been over 45, there just arent the hills around here to get enough of a run, and when I'm somewhere hilly I'm a bit of a scaredy cat..

Not much, I'm afraid.

Fastest recorded on tandem: 46.2, Glen Convinth, Highland. I think we may have exceeded this the day after I'd lost the computer, descending from the Cross of Greet towards High Bentham. It was screamingly fast.

Fastest in Essex on tandem: 45.2, Essex Way, South Benfleet.

Fastest on solo machine: 44.something, going towards Wantage on last year's Anfractuous.

52 mph off the Beacon on the L2B (the road that goes under the A27; wouldn't even think about it normally due to uncoming traffic but it's one way that day) in 1994

There's usually someone totalled at the bottom waiting for a meat wagon

47 mph on the Saddlescombe road on the way back (with oncoming)

a surprisingly sober 70 kph off the Lauteret on La Marmotte (I've heard tall stories of 110)

53mph down the Ditchling Beacon onna tandem with knackered brakes and the Essex U18 team's tighthead prop on the back.  That chamois was never the same again.

I've not had a computer on any of my bikes for a couple of years, so I'm not sure what my fastest has been on a solo.

Not sure, no speedo. The descent into leek must be good for 50mph+ though.

My 57 mph was here, roughly 6 miles from my house.  I'd be tempted to organise a ride including it, with a small prize for the fastest recorded speed.

On a side note, I rode down it once on fixed and bottled it at 190rpm.  There's no letup, since it's downhill all the way.

Can I point out that a fast speed is about as likely as a hot temperature.
